So what does /k/ think of Dissipators?
22 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Palmetto makes a faux-dissipator upper which really has a mid-length gas system, but they pinned the front sight farther forward on the barrel to accommodate a rifle length two-piece handguard. It seems like a good concept if you don't plan to freefloat it. I'm tempted to buy one in hopes that it would be a little easier to convert to free float, though...I assume that a low profile gas block is already installed, so I'd just have to remove the front sight. Anybody have any thoughts on this plan for someone who has never installed a free float handguard before?
>>
>>31999686
I bought one one PSAs a few years ago. They're sexy as fuck. If you're going to get an AR and don't feel like free floating, or having a folding front sight, there's no better way to go.

the GOP needs to focus on replacing ObummerCare and fixing the economy first. Then when they've won a supermajority in the midterms they can start dismantling blue state gun control piece by piece by preempting it and the conservative majority SCOTUS will hammer the final nail into the coffin.

We're going to get tired of winning.

>I live in Texas, should I join the Air Reserves or the Air Guard?
>What are the chances of getting an AGR slot?
Me again (AGR from previous threads with various 3D AFSCs under my belt).

It's hard to say what the ease of getting an ARG slot will be, because different units are filled with different people. I was an AGR in one unit that was filled to the brim with ex-Marines and you know what they valued far more than technical aptitude, computer skills and ability to perform? They really valued people that were ex-Marines, nevermind how productive you actually were. It was mostly just about the way people carried themselves. Then there's my current unit. People that would've been set for CMSgt in my previous unit would be stuck at SSgt/TSgt in my current unit because we have shit to do.

That being said, if you're smart, have strong technical aptitude, and a proper attitude, there's a good chance of getting an AGR slot *IF* you're looking at a unit that has a bunch of AGR slots. Some units are stacked with technician positions and a handful of token AGR slots for something like counterdrug. Some units have none.

One thing to keep in mind in the guard: if you're not willing to move around, you might be severely stifling your career choices. I've kept an eye on AGR slots around the country for some years now, and Texas is not what I think of when it comes to states with units full of 3D AGR slots.

in the last knife thread, the CRK Green Beret / "Yarborough" and Gerber "LHR" (Larson, Harsey, Reeve) got a bunch of unwarranted hate.

The design of both is as a functional combat survival/utility knife, and both knives come with amazing quality sheaths.

Can anyone recommend good alternatives to these?

The last thread suited up and blasted off

Propelled Pancetta Edition

> What's this thread about?
As usual this thread is for the discussion and pics of tracked and wheeled AFVs of all kinds from MBTs to supertanks to self propelled AA guns. Please keep it civil and cite sources for statistics.

In the 1980s, the Italian consortium OTO Melara pitched to the Army the merits of an Air Defence Tank, comprised of a rapid firing 76 mm autocannon and a heavy chassis based on the Palmaria SPG, itself similar to the chassis on the other OF-40 MBT venture. In 1987, the firm produced a prototype armed with an improved derivative of the 76 mm Otobreda naval gun offering 120 rpm, and an advanced equipment suite made up of an S band search radar with a range for 15 km for aircraft and 8 km for helicopters. A Ka band tracking radar allowed engagements of helicopters at 6 km and aircraft at 4 km, able to track 8 to 24 air targets at once, combined with optical fire control systems and laser rangefinders. Of note, was the Otomatic’s not insubstantial anti-armour capabilities, being utilise APFSDS rounds rapidly in direct fire modes, to the extent that OTO Melara considered exporting the turret and gun as a standalone weapons package. The Otomatic was a hefty vehicle, weighing in at 46 tonnes, powered by a MTU MB 837 Ka-500 series diesel engine with 740 horsepower, mounted in a torsion bar suspension like the Palmaria, consequently retaining the same track and wheel arrangements of seven double-tired road wheels to a side. Despite the promise of the Otomatic, with some Italian sources claiming superior accuracy and combat efficiency compared to the Gepard or Marksman, the vehicle was never accepted into full production, the ubiquity of AA missiles, and the existing quad SIDAM 25 mm being commonly cited reasons.

OP: As always, feedback, suggestions wanted and appreciated.
Sorry about the extended delay in bringing the next /thg/ thread up, when I checked the state of the thread last weekend, I imagined that there was enough life to last into the week. Unfortunately, I became quite busy in the meantime, and I forgot all about posting on /k/ for a while, which meant no thread for last week. I do hope everyone’s Halloween was enjoyable, however (I had no doorknocks this year, surprisingly enough).
The Otomatic is an intensely interesting piece of military hardware, if only for the sheer novelty of a late Cold War SPAAG utilising a 76 mm rapid fire weapon as opposed to the prevailing trend of 20-40 mm autocannons as we saw with many of the examples featured in previous threads. I am not a native Italian speaker (or reader), so I was only able to hazily discern some of the features of the Otomatic in Italian language sources, so I am hoping there is someone in the thread able to provide more enlightening sources and facts that offer more than what is typically outlined on the internet. It should also be mentioned that there technically is a “successor” to the Otomatic, the Draco, mounting a lightened 76 mm on the Centauro chassis, although I believe the plan was to allow installation on a variety of wheeled AFVs. In any case, however, it has not been accepted into service. (Link: http://www.leonardocompany.com/en/-/draco)

And in case anyone missed this link in the last thread: an overview of the equipment in PLA formations on a unit basis, and a partial look at its order of battle. https://imgur.com/a/wk2zo#LMS1lXX

More tank news, as per the new format.
If you have more queries regarding a news story, just point it out, and I’ll further elaborate and provide links. (1/2)

A spokesperson for the British Defence Equipment and Support Organisation for the Ministry of Defence has confirmed that as of November 2, BAE Systems and Rheinmetall Landsysteme have become the preferred bidders for the Challenger 2 Life Extension Project. The LEP will involve the modernisation of some 227 Challenger 2 MBTs.
And that’s all for now.

As of October 27, KMW has delivered over half of Qatar’s order for 63 Leopard 2A7+ MBTs. It marks the first major export contract for Leopards in the Middle East. In addition, the package comes with 24 PzH 2000 155 mm artillery systems as well.

On the same day, General Dynamics Land Systems unveiled its upgunned Stryker model, the first of eight with Orbital ATK XM813 Bushmaster 30 mm weapons to address capability concerns in Europe. Government testing will begin in January 2017, under the designation of XM1296 Infantry Carrier Vehicle – Dragoon.

Australia’s Tectonica has partnered with Rheinmetall to develop a Local Situational Awareness System (LSAS) for the Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle being offered as a bid for the Land 400 Phase 2 requirement. Rheinmetall is reportedly providing funding and support and offering its global supply chain to the Melbourne company should its bid be successful.

China’s export light tank, the VT-5 based off the ZTQ “mountain tank”, has finally been exhibited at the Zhuhai Air Show China. According to Jane’s, it “has a combat weight of between 33 and 36 tonnes, depending on the armour package fitted and measures 9.20 m (gun forward) in length, by 3.30 m (with side skirts) in width, and 2.50 m (turret roof) in height.” NORINCO claims its FCS allows ranges of at least 3000 m.

Indonesia’s PT Pindad and Turkey’s FNSS has revealed details of the joint Modern Medium Weight Tank under development. Two prototypes are currently being built, one in Turkey and the other in Indonesia, to be completed in 2017, slated for roles against medium to light AFVs with its 105 mm gun and other miscellaneous combat operations.

Rheinmetall has also courted Indonesia with its Marder Medium Tank, a vehicle mounted with a Leonardo HITFACT II turret. This substantially enhanced Marder 1 has included a better powerpack, greater internal volume, upgraded suspension and a modular passive armour package.

Ukraine and Indonesia at Indo Defence 2016 has also discussed plans to produce BTR-4 APCs in Indonesia. Further negotiations could be underway, a Ukroboronprom official confirmed, following the acceptance of Indonesia’s first five BTR-4 vehicles.

As part of the Silver Arrow exercise in Latvia, MILREM’s THeMIS (Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System) UGV has functioned as a logistics support platform at the squad level. Carrying loads of at least 750 kg and potentially able to support 1000 kg, the THeMIS can travel at 24 km/h on its diesel/electric hybrid powerplant, during the exercise successfully demonstrating the viability of logistics UGVs in the field.

Lieutenant General H R McMaster, director of the US Army Training and Doctrine Command's Army Capabilities Integration Center (ARCIC) has suggested while speaking at a November 1 AUSA event that US combat vehicle capabilities are lagging behind their contemporaries. Also at AUSA, James Moran of Boeing suggested several key changes to the M1A2 including the transition to diesel engines, greater integration of APS, and a potential shift to a three man crew to reduce weight and volume. As of of FY2017, the Army has two new programmes underway, the MPF (Mobile Protected Firepower) and GMV (Ground Mobility Vehicle).

And that’s all for now.
