Watch YouTube, practice in your backyard, then graduate to practicing while you're camping

Then start testing yourself with a support network in place for when you fail. (You will fail.)

Not bad advice.

I recommend Les Stroud, aka Survivor Man. It's a mix of good knowledge as well as entertaining. Then advance skills off that.

Apple sucks peen. If they supported webm it means they couldn't boast having a 30 minute longer battery time.
>>
>>31990946
Here's a good book, it's still in print.
It's useless if you don't practice though.
Start with weekend trips, pack well and make sure someone knows where you are going and when to expect you back.

Go out into the wilderness

Survive

Or don't
>>
US Army Survival Manual from the 70s. Mine is specifically FM 21-76 Department of Army Field Manual (1970)

Supplement this with field guides to your local flora/fauna/mushrooms. Look up internet era guides of how to properly bivouack, etc. Now: time to test these skills. Go hiking and camp out, try to identify stuff (bring food, don't eat shit when you don't know shit). Take precautions for bears if they exist near you.
>>
>>31991453
He's not exactly entry-tier. Plus by his own admission these are things that take weeks and months and he edits out his failures.
>>
Ray Mears, Cody Lundin, Ron Hood, and Les Stroud are your friends. Watch and read everything you can from them. Cody Lundins book 98.6 degrees should be the first book you read, although you won't like it and might be boring because its not about survival skills but it's the one book that you will constantly refer to when reading or watching anything else. Try to find Ron Hood videos, there are torrents out there. Ray Mears and Led Stroud have a few TV shows, but know their shit, especially mears. Stroud has a documentary called Silence and Solitude or Snowshoes and Solitude in which he survives with his then gf in the boreal forest for a year with no modern tools. Also check out Dick Proennekke (sp) Alone in the wilderness. Just research as much as you can before you go out and try some stupid shit and become another statistic of the main cause of death when innawoods, hypothermia.

Look up the channel "Primitive Technology" on YouTube. It's some Australian guy who doesn't bring any modern tools and makes huts and tools from all natural things. He even smelted iron ore.

Except once I tried to do the same thing and after like 3 hours I was exhausted from making rope out of grass

You can ALWAYS split this way. You're in nature. Modify your environment. One thing I do if I'm splitting a lot of wood is set a flat rock between two larger ones or rounds to keep the splitting wood upright. You could also dig a shallow hole or just baton that shit...
>>
Don't waste your time watching those retards that drink their piss. There is no circumstance where that would be useful.

Likewise, don't waste your time watching those retards that show you how to smelt iron. You're not liable to find yourself transported 5000 years into the past.

Backpacking skills are practical.
>>
Getting a basic understanding of fundamentals. Then going up from there to more advance stuff then from there care and repair of equipment. So far basic is just simple fire tech with flint , simple basic shelter , and snare stuff then implement it outside hunting or camping.

Right now I know way to much for myself since I used free time at work to look it up and then practice. When it goes to steel and other equipment then handle repair/replacement , sharpening , blade repair and modification is always good to know.

Again basic knowledge , how to and common sense will serve you farther than anything else. Also water purification because bad water will kill you faster and painfully like being eaten alive.
>>
>>31994342
>Am I the only fucking person who rests the blade on the wood and lifts them together then smashes down?

I wouldn't say I smash it down. I only use enough force to embed the axe into the wood enough that the log holds itself on the axe, for a second both-hands-on-the-axe swing.
>>
>>31994437
If the logs don't have neat sawn ends, you're going to be wasting a lot of time trying to get each one to stand upright.
>>

>>31994498
I've split wood with hewn ends. just dig a small hole. it's not hard.
>>
>>31994855
It's sharp because she's never used it. You don't split wood by putting your hand immediately in the way

this guy's not really a wilderness survival guy. his shits awesome and fun to watch, but it's not the sort of thing you do for basic survival -- this is what you want to do if you're trying to build a homestead in the 800s AD.
