Why the fuck am I getting faded out colors? layer opacity is all up to 100% yet every color I pick is much lighter than it's supposed to be. Am I supposed to look somewhere in brush settings or something?

Yo

Are pencils a good medium for coloring or should i go straight to pastels or paint?

Also with pencils do you put the lightest color down first or the lightest? I have seen videos where each way is done but I was wondering if there is a general consensus.

Finally, is there a maximum number of pencils you would try to blend together? I don't know if it is because I am using cheap pencils and paper but i noticed I started to get flecks of pigment appearing after trying to work in alot of different color.

They're good for colouring, but it depends on your personal style/preferences. I can't really compare to pastels or paint since my preference is different than yours. Learn as much as you can about as many different mediums and decide what fits you best.

How you use your tools is much more important than the tools themselves. Like, just because X artist uses oil paints doesn't mean you'll get the same results by using the same exact brushes, turpentine, canvas, and paints as that artist.

I go light to dark since it's easier to add more colour than subtract.

3-5 pencils/colours. Again, it depends. My pencils are the cheapest prismacolour brand ones and they work well enough for my use. Some stores sell individual pencils for cheap instead of those big, expensive multi-packs, so maybe try a couple from different manufacturers or whatever.

I lost all my files, I had a couple of tutorials shared by /ic members, could we start a thread here and share links?

A little bit of context:

I've wanted to draw for ages. I was always doodling shit in class and never really good at it. Now that I've finished high school/sixth form I wanted to devote at least a few hours a day to drawing. I stumbled upon /ic/ while just doing random studies, hopped onto the beginner article and did some exercises from drawing on the right side of the brain.

I just started Loomis yesterday. Ofc I'm not expecting instant results, but I can't shake the feeling after like 2 hours of drawing that I'm just going about it wrong. Not just the Loomis but my approach to art in general.

Don't get me wrong, I have the patience (autism) discipline required to just sit down and do it day-in-day-out, but if anything I'm lacking the confidence I would have if I had some guidance or a teacher. It's liberating and terrifying at the same time to embark on such a journey on my own but I'm hell-bent on getting good. I tried to sleep on it but I think I'm getting nowhere. I used a 2p coin for some help with the circles.

TL;DR: What am I doing wrong?

You need to start with knowing how to write for one. Then you set up an outline. It's not as difficult as it looks, it's literally a book with pictures. Even the program can be easily made with RenPy

>there are people who unironically flood their galleries with anime girls/lolis
I just really want to ask those people - what do you expect from your art career if you keep focusing on anime girls?
- animation
- gamedev
- illustration
All of these paths are nearly closed to you if you not drawing characters for a hentai game or doing loli porn comissions.

Or may be im mistaken and /ic/ is mostly for hobby-ish artists who dont want to go to any industry?

No need to be upset, im just very interested about that - i noticed the majority of artists draw only anime females.

eh, the difference between anime and popular western CalArts / Disney esque stylization is incredibly subtle these days, so if your animu girl drawings show strong fundamentals and skill, there's no reason why you wouldn't be hired by western studios that are in need of those skills.

Pic related works for Marvel as story board artist for major movies such as GotG2 and her entire gallery is full of animu-Disney hybrid girl drawings.

Is there any way to learn the human figure and how to draw it without drawing nude refs? Figure drawing is just so boring and even after doing a few dozen I don't feel as if I've learned anything.
Plus finding interesting figures to practice with is difficult as heck.

Wow. Ngm with that attitude. What, did you just start drawing yesterday? Suck it up.

Check out vilppu if you need help understand what you should be doing with figure drawing exercises, you can probably find his drawing manual in a book thread somewhere and you can find some videos of his classes elsewhere.

Currently a student at an academy that's sponsored by the Art Renewal Center. There are a few of us on /ic/ it seems.

In general there are little to no entrance exams required across these academies. You can pay for either full-time or part-time and from what I've seen they offer all of their courses to both times. The fees are not that bad - ballpark is about $200-$400/mo.

Some academies offer specific things - Angel Academy does a full program on portraiture, Grand Central Atelier follows the Hudson River School landscape painting, et cetera.

The tough part is staying in once you get in because the curriculum is difficult and the demand for you to do as perfect of a job as you can are set from the get-go.

Instructors are very kind and knowledgeable, but it doesn't mean they aren't strict and they will absolutely not let you get away with half-assed work.

If you are the kind of person that can sit down and work on one drawing for 100 hours, or one painting for several months, then you should be fine. The timeline is not an exaggeration.

I got a moleskine for christmas and I can't fucking draw in it. I did some comfort zone ink doodles in the first spread and now I feel like I ruined the whole thing. I usually carry a small and cheap sketchbook in my pocket (I got a bunch of them at a sale) and I draw several times a day in it from life. It's pages are crumbled and fucked up and I don't care. I love drawing in that thing. I don't really make beautiful drawings in it but it's perfect for quick little life studies when waiting for the bus and what not.
But in the moleskine every imperfect drawing feels like a waste. I'll try carry it around in my jacket and treat it like my smaller beat up sketchbook but I don't know if I'll get over that resistance.
Anyone else feel the same way? It's like there is a fucking force field around the moleskine that kills my desire to draw

hey /ic/ I was wondering on any tip on not being autistic while working in public (cafes, bookstores, and etc). I ask here because I value /ic/'s opinion much more than /i/'s.

drawing in public is a meme. trying to draw people in the 2.5 seconds it takes for them to walk past you doesn't actually teach you anything. But hipster artist wanna-bes really want an excuse to pull out their moleskin (another meme) and sit in a Starbucks sipping expresso and showing everyone how artsy and sophisticated they are.

is it common practice to mix warm colors with cool colors to make a color? all i can tell if its a warm blue or cool blue for instance and just mix warm or cool colors then add maybe orange if i want to make it duller or yellow to make it more green. but would i for instance have to mix pthalo blue with alizirin crimson for any specific scenarios?
5 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>2792149
Yes, in a split primaries palette it's normal to mix warm and cool colors together when you need a duller mix or a shade that leans in any particular way. You can also dull it towards gray or black by adding a complementary color to your mix.
In your specific example, Alizarin Crimson and Phthalo Blue would make a dull purple, since even though the phthalo is a high chroma color it is farther away from violet in the color wheel than a warm-leaning blue like Ultramarine would be.
You should keep in mind not just the hue but the saturation and value of the colors you're mixing as well, since when you need to lighten or darken a color you'll always be tilting it either cooler or warmer, and usually dulling it in the process.
>>
>>2792161
another anon here, with no proper teaching in painting so I don't know, neighter do I have the tools to try it out myself

but what if you mix 2 cool colors? but 2 warm colors?

so if you mix a cool color with a warm color you get another more muddy grey color? if so, that explains why my paintings where so bad when I was a kid, contrary to my drawings which were the best

and if all that is right I might give another go at painting

Remember that warm and cool are relative terms.
Reusing OP's alizarin crimson+phthalo blue example, a cool-leaning red and warm-leaning blue would mix a cleaner violet than this cool red/cool blue or a warm red/warm blue would. Because they are both closer colors to violet to begin with.

It's helpful if you visualize a subtractive color wheel, or even paint a small one yourself when you're unsure of how to get the color you want. The edges of the wheel are your pure, full chroma colors, and as you move to the center they grey out and eventually meet at a neutral black. It's why you get black by mixing your three primaries or two complementary colors together.
Take that wheel and draw a line between the two colors you're mixing together - the closer that line is to the center of the wheel, the duller that mix will be. Of course that's also relative and will vary depending on the saturation of the colors you're mixing together and their proportion in the mix.

It can sound difficult to think about, but it helps if you take a more methodical approach to color mixing. You'll never get a more saturated color in a mix than the ones you're starting with, so for the cleanest possible result you want to get where you need to be with the least amount of colors and the least amount of steps possible.
Lay down the color in you palette that's closest to the one you're trying to achieve, and then think about it - does it need to be warmer or cooler? Lighter or darker? Then you add the color that will get you closest to that, and so on. You're constantly having to tilt colors one way or another, since your colors have not just a hue but a value associated to them that you need to keep in mind. A blue will cool a red but also push it down in value towards purple, while a white will cool that red but push it up in value towards pink.

OK /IC/ I have a question about something that's been bothering me my entire life:
How does one make art while dealing with ADHD?
Ive been trying to make comics and just generally improve but as I got older, it got worse and now it's just really hard to get anything done. It breaks my heart to not be able finish or even get anything off the ground. I'm currently not in a place that I can go see a doctor since I am doing seasonal work until I find a place to stay permanently.
Do you guys have any tips?
What about art and mental illness in general?

You need to get your life together (i.e. see a professional after you settle down) before you do something as trivial (relative) as art.
