Hello /ic/, what is your inspiration, your muse or goals in pursuing art and what makes art good in your opinion?
I started working towards improving through doing studies and practice since 2010. Now I am just having trouble with motivation to keep going. Looking at the art I considered good for skill didn't last. I went back to anime that originally inspired me noticing how boring the style is. From being here I became very critical on myself. That critique mindset really set me down to being very cynical questioning the quality of art, or what makes art good and worth putting the time into the craft. Let me also say that modern or contemporary art never inspired me. Although the old masters and great painters did inspire. Art as whole began to feel very meaningless. I always found myself lost as to the goal of improving except for the sake of improving. It wasn't to be like the greats. Once their inspiration left me wondering what the point of art was. So tell me what is yours to maybe get a different perspective.

Like Henry Scott Tuke or or John Gambril Nicholson or Leonardo da Vinci, I am inspired by the vibrant beauty and energy choice aspects of life have to offer.

I like this post.
Good art combines high technical skill with appealing design, and evokes some sort of emotion or mood.
my current goal is getting the first part down. I feel like the second one will be easier, and the third will be the hardest.

Oh boy a new thread to shitpost in
just say something
I realise that a lot people who like oil painting style traditionally or digitally worship sargent a lot, well I'm that kind of person but i usually find his work really dull in either composition or colours, so I must be missing out on something. So what makes sargent's work so appealing for you?
>>2790878
Sargent's stroke economy and style really lends itself well to being interpreted digitally. Artists such as Craig Mullins have adapted his traditional strokes into digital.
Personally, I agree with you in the sense that I find his work dull in terms of substance. (For me). But I really do enjoy the way he renders material - especially satins and silks- and his understanding on the subtle color changes of said material is really nice to look at.
People's love of his might also stem from the fact that he's just very good at what he does. Regardless of personal opinion, he knew what he was doing and its apparent in every painting- that kind of expertise and mastery is hard to dismiss.
Portraiture was Sargent's daily grind to get an income. The watercolours he did of things he saw on his travels were his real passion and those are amazing. Maybe check those out if you find his portraits boring.

Are you blind?
I wish you all the best and remember - you can do it if you believe hard enough! HO HO HO
Thanks santa
I'LL DO MY BEST FOR YOU SANTA
Lately, I haven't been drawing at all at pissing away my time. I decided to just doodle to get back in the mood. Is this a good idea or a waste of time since I could be doing something better.
>>2790721
Doing something is better than doing nothing.
What do you s/ic/k bastards think of Steinberg?
This guy draws philosophy.
>>2788813
it's shit.
>>2788813
To be honest, I'm not a fan of this kind of art.
>>2788813
i like it

>when drawing from life, draw what you see, not what you think you see
shutting off your brain while drawing will surely make you less creative in the long run.
instead of drawing a box, for example, imagine it as a house and learn to see things in abstract shapes.
>drawing while playing runescape is better than just playing runescape
how do you even draw AND play?
>don't draw anime characters' faces!
not unless your endgoal is anime
and it worked out well for kr0n
>>2790219
holy shit people still play runescape?
>>2790293
I'll play a bit, then after a level or whatever I'll stop and do a practice figure. I've heard that 'turn your brain off while drawing' thing before actually but when drawing from life I don't see how it's a good thing to go off the rails and be inaccurate
>>2790321
There's a new version that's sucking all the old players back into it.
Is there anyone that sells a bunch of face references like proko sells body references? Or for free. I just need a good variety to practice from.
>>2789706
ill sell you my collection kohai
>>2789706
stop being a lazy shit and look through google, imagestock, flickr, tumblr, porn sites etc.
>>2789706
This has a decent selection although it gets old after a little while.

If you mean drawing from life then kys
If you mean drawing using cgi 3d models then yeah those people will never make it
Ok, I'll bait
tell me please mister expert of irrefutable opinions, what makes drawing with 3d models so fucking bad?
>>2785280
Practically photobashing.
>right hand starts hurting, begin drawing with left hand because nothing will stop you from practicing
>notice that my left hand drawings have better proportions and i can draw mechanical things
>try drawing with right again
>proportions go back to shit and you can't draw your beloved mechs
>tfw you realize you're probably left handed
>could've been a lot closer to making it by now
did anyone else find out you're a latent leftie? did you try to begin drawing with your left hand?
>>2790203
>"Drawing on the right side of the brain" was right.
>Tfw everyone calling it bullshit are BTFO.
wtff?
>>2790203
What the fuck I just tried drawing with my left hand and my drawings look more solid all of a sudden. Messy because my coordination is off but more solid. Like my brain is processing depth easier.

i wanted to paint my dad a painting for xmas but i don't think that's happening
can someone help me figure out how to make an improvised easel or something to hold the canvas up?
it's just an 8x10 canvas so i don't need anything huge
>>2787839
congrats you're retarded and have the emotional maturity of an autistic man-child. lean the painting against a box of go buy an easel at walmart for 10 bucks you useless fuck. pick up a gallon of mineral spirits while you're there, you can thin your paints with it or (preferably) drink it.
>>2787842
i was going to buy the gallon of mineral spirits but my brother said i wouldn't need that much
i thought he was probably wrong but he actually took art in highschool while i didn't so maybe he was right
>>2787842
also what should i do with my canvas?
i got liquid white and a little bit of pthalo blue on it now
should i just let it dry and then put liquid white over it again when i try again?
How do I improve?
you cannot improve
improvement is a myth to fool the hearts of men and give them false hope
you're either born talented, or you aren't.
end of story.
sorry anon.
>>2787763
ok nice bullshit, now tell me how I improve.
>>2787763
>literally defeating the point of /ic/
sup /ic/
i drew pic related for a friend but once i scan it in my shitty hp psc 1200 scanner the colors get completely washed out. i've tried messing with its brightness and contrast settings but to very little success, i think the bulb is so bright it just completely washes out all the colors. is there anything i can do about this? the colors are extremely important to this drawing.
>>2790323
this is what my scanner does to it :/.
>>2790323
You have shitty lighting in your house, check it out in daylight. I mean, look at it, the white of your paper is fucking orange.
>>2790346
lol i put it directly underneath my lamp with a 40w incandescent light bulb because my camera phone is complete garbage, doesn't even have a flash.
but still this picture is lush, sharpies really make this thing pop in person and its completely lost once i scanned it in my computer. the sunset isn't that dominantly purple, it has a lot of reds and oranges that are completely gone. the light greens on the buildings are murky and faded when they're actually a neon green. its such a bummer! i spent so much time coloring this and layering it to make up for the poor perspective on the skyline and it got totally fucked. i mean it still looks okay i guess.
