I have been drawing faces for months now. They still look weird as I just don't get the form of the face despite Loomising. Any tips to help me understand the form of the human face? I already got past the symbol drawing stage but now I am stuck here.

Thanks!

chances are you just need to do the grind, Anon. You don't just magically learn to draw by reading a book.

Remember to always draw faces in different poses, and also integrate them into full figures w/ different expressions. Draw from life, it helps

if you were past the symbol drawing stage then you wouldn't be stuck here
keep on loomising

I mean, I can draw well if I look at a photo but I cannot draw faces from imagination

Can't pin down what exactly about this artist (Holly Brown) makes me uneasy. there's something wrong, I know. Not sure if it's the asymmetry or awkwardness

Wtf that's a bizarre coincidence... I was pondering her work earlier today for similar reasons.

I see her as a proficient artist who knows the technical aspects of art, but just has some pretty bad stylization.

She has color theory down perfectly fine, she's good at the figure, and she's fine at art in general judging by her realistic work. It's just her accumulation of these skills into one comic book style that kill it. If she had a better style I would be more of a fan.

That said its fair to assume she is more interested in quantity over quality in most cases, considering she is aiming to get a comic out really soon. Her asymmetry isn't placed in appealing places like composition - it's simply put in ugly areas like faces and form. It makes it so unappealing and seemingly done on accident like a tumblr kid who doesn't know fundamentals

by /ic/ standards is my friend good?

mine from school
>fine artist decides to be an illustrator because they realize there's no money in anything else
>graphic designer decides to be an illustrator because they realize they're a corporate sell out
>silently watch them struggle to learn the basics of drawing out of their imagination

Artists staying in their comfort zones and drawing the same thing over an over again.

>randomly stumble upon a drawing that catches your attention
>find the artist
>follow him/her at instagram
>he/she posts the same fucking thing every time
>you begin to hate his/her style

Thanks for making me hate your art, Anna Cattish.

I don't think this person's art is that bad ( ᷄・ὢ・ ᷅ )
I mean yeah it's a bunch of girls in a similar style but they seem to have basic knowledge. It doesn't look bad.
I'd be happy and satisfied if I could draw like that.
>>
>>2793005
I hate this too actually, the problelm is I see it with so many people and I understand why they do it. They're trying to sell their own "brand" of art in order to be commissioned. Still I think its just really boring and I respect people more when they try and branch out and try to draw different things.

Ateliers and pay-as-you-go classes are unarguably the most ethical means of teaching art, however it's important you know what you're getting into in either case.

I am interested in animation but I go to a ("ARC Approved"®) atelier once a week. At the atelier they teach the sight-size method which is pure, "literalist" (to coin a Loomis term) observational drawing-and that's basically it. While there is 'some' overlap with what I do there and what I want to do, if I were to devote myself to that method and discipline exclusively I would be making a terrible, terrible mistake when it comes to achieving my own personal goals.

We use both sight-size and comparative measurement. Life drawings are always done larger than sight-size. Instructors encourage us to use our eyes first and then confirm by plumb line as a means of visual training.

I thought most if not all ateliers would teach both?!

The mix of pay-as-you-go, affordability, and depth of skill + historic knowledge from the instructors surprised me the most.

The only atelier around here really has a boner for sight-size. It was apparently at one time one of the only, if not the only, ateliers in the entire united states in the latter half of the 20th century so I can't say I'm surprised they're stoic in their defense of the method. Many ateliers and organizations promoting realism in the country trace their lineage to it and its founder, but I'm not surprised many of them may have departed from teaching that strict sight-size method to the exclusion of all else.

Luckily thanks to the internet it's easier to have access to individuals like Vilppu, Borenstein, Silver, and other animation-friendly instructors because there aren't too many brick and mortar classes outside of the toxic $40,000-a-year art college environment I'm aware of.

How do you construct your drawings?

Learn anatomy and perspective. You'll mostly be practicing perspective with construction since it's based around simplifying anatomy/objects down to basic forms.

Read some Bridgman or something

>hey bud wanna model for me or wa' ?
>>
>>2793366
do you know her? if yes, just speak to her about your art and say that it is very hard to impove without real life refference to draw from, and you'd like to draw someone, and would she mind it if she was a model for you. and hope you won't get recommended loomis by her.
also you can show her some of your best stuff to think you are good artist (what you are obviously not faggot)
side tip: if a miracle happens and she somehow agrees, when you draw her i suggest you don't drool over her, don't make any compliments about her body or in anyway show her that you got a thing for her. just imagine that you are drawing something entirely not sexual, a brick or a kitchen tile(hope you are not that guy), be as cold and professional as you can, this way i guarantee she will model for you more and you will even get to shag her after third or fourth session
>>
>>2793382

Kek'd. Thanks for the advice... I don't know her well but I've spoken to her at least.

Alright, so, I got some Christmas money. What is the best thing I could buy to improve my art for 100 dollars or less? Could be anything, better materials, programs, books, videos, reference image packs, a sloppy hand job from an uninterested Asian massage parlor worker, anything.

Couple reams of paper, pencils, maybe charcoal, blending stumps, kneaded erasers, pens, maybe some cheap sketchbooks. Then read the books from the sticky. That's all you really need. Probably don't even need to spend more than 20 bucks to git gud, the biggest investment is time.

How can you delay gratification when just starting out? It's demotivating how long it will take to be able to produce any decent art.
38 posts and 13 images submitted.

the gratification is in learning. if you don't enjoy drawing, you either need a new teacher or should give up
>>
>>2791231
How is the learning enjoyable? It's just tedious.

plz sticky this

i get why beginners say they're more interested in the end product (which they naturally should be) but how are you supposed to survive through the intitial year/2 year grind when it feels like a chore

if i were you op i'd reevaluate what i truly want from art
