Are there any good books on design /ic/ would recommend?

I'm primarily a 3d artist (though I draw sometimes), and I feel like the work I do is weakest on the levels of fundamental construction. I've got no trouble making something detailed, weathered, copying perfect materials or textures, but I struggle a lot with picking initial shapes or starting my designs.

No, not really. Usually we just look at life for inspiration. Like vehicles, animals, cities, etc.

What about for 3D, how does one get as strong as you that you are able to do perfect materials or textures?

How about picrelated?
>>
>>2869968
I watched lectures that explained how to break down materials into comprehensible components, and techniques to create them through painting, manipulating photo textures, etc. Once I understood the thought process I could then apply it to my own work. Same as learning any other skill, really.

You can look at pretty shapes and copy them but that alone won't necessarily give you an understanding of what makes them pretty. Some people work intuitively, yeah, but you can't speak for everyone, I'm certain these processes have been broken down by people before.

So, how many artists do you follow have ruined their own blogs with politic talk and virtue signaling?

I count about five that I enjoy who I now unfollow and just save their art to my computer.

why shouldn't one express their opinions through their art? isnt that the point really?
>>
>>2866124
These people aren't doing it via art, they're just bitching and reblogging echo chamber opinions, or otherwise making posts like, "This blog will always support Muslim refugees."

If it was actually stuff like pic related, I would still enjoy it.
>>
>>2866124
>through their art
OP didn't say that.

They most likely mean artists who keep posting/reblogging politics/social justice shit/etc and not keep their art separate. Meaning that if you want to follow them, you're forced to bear through that garbage as well.

How do I respectfully deal with an artist who is more or less refusing/avoiding to do work I paid for months ago in full? Said artist has posted images to her Tumblr since I've paid so she's clearly taking new projects.

Thanks in advance.

You can try trashing her on social media, it won't work if you're not popular though. Otherwise submit to artists-beware.livejournal.com

If you can't draw live models you can't draw. It's really that simple.

Hey /ic/

So I've decided to transition to digital painting from traditional. I purchased a wacom intuos in the medium size and I am going to start the ctrl+paint tutorials. I do have some questions about software though.

Ctrl + Paint teaches PS navigation and utilization on CS6. I am wanting to get a PS CC sub going but the payment plans aren't making sense. There is a "Photography Plan" for $9.99/month that comes with PS and LR. However there is another plan were you pick either PS or LR for $19.99/month...? I've searched google and the adobe forums posts that pull say with the Photography plan you still get the full version of PS. Is this right?

> Paying for Photoshop

I know, I know. It's a mixture of I can pay for a legit sub and that I haven't trusted a keygen since 2012.

There's this cute grill I know and I wanna paint her to impress her. How long you think it'd take of digital painting to reach a level like the attached pic?

I'm already semi-decent at traditional materials like charcoal and graphite. Never done oil painting before and I've never used a digital tablet before. You think 1-2 years of practice would be enough to reach that level of digital painting?

Learn to dance instead.

seriously bud, I've been in this game along time. Shit ain't like titanic. You want a hobby that pulls tail? Dance. You want a hobby that no one will really appreciate, requires massive amounts of time alone and will eventually isolate you? Keep pursuing art.
>>
>>2866189
I'm fuckin short like 5'8 isn't that a little too short to dance? Or is that ok?

What kinda dancing do I learn?

And srsly I wanna paint neway but god damn buddy you crushed my dreams of impressing this chick
>>
>>2866140
Even if you did reach this level, or even a level far above, her response is going to be something along the lines of "aw, thanks how sweet c:", and that'll be it.

It's very selfish to expect that someone will love you just because you created a piece of art for them.

It may work on someone who you're already very close with, but even then you shouldn't need to. And if they don't know you well they're more likely to think of you as a creep.

Anyway, as for how long it would take to get to this level with no previous experience of digital art. At least two or three years depending on how much time you put into developing your skills as well as how you use that time (4+ hours a day). Expect four years or more if you only put a couple of hours a day into it.

My name is [redacted] I work for Ididian Containment as a low level security officer. To pass the time I've been making these journals during shifts, little sketches of what I see here every night.

If you are reading this, something has happened to me...
And you are in grave danger.
Journal 13

So this little guy is Contained #89, apparently he is one of our oldest contained. Caught in 1992 in [redacted] by a descendant of the monster hunter [redacted] [redacted], one of our earliest agents. So what I can gather from the files I read on him he is ranked a 4 danger level (out of 5, 5 being the highest), and is well over 2,345 years old. Contained #89 I incredibly fast and dangerous, is fed one pig a week, but it prefers to feed on the internal organs of virgin, catholic females. For this reason it is only to be fed by male atheists, and only on Sundays as per [redacted] customs.

Contained #89 is highly susceptible to light and is kept in a pitch black cell with no lights. However his cell is suspended above a spotlight emitting UV rays. Even if he were to escape the cell he would immediately be trapped by the light.

While light has shown to hurt it severely, no known method of eradication has been found. Methods tried so far include, decapitation, gunfire, burning, stabbing, [redacted], exorcism, [redacted], [redacted], [redacted], baptism, [redacted], holy water, [redacted], silver stakes, [redacted],starvation, and [redacted].

So far contained #89 is just kept confined to keep it from attacking the general populace.

240 and counting...

Do I start practicing on surface muscles/anatomical forms?
I just want to get better at drawing from imagination, and it seems the best way to do that is to draw muscles/base forms and figure out dimensions, etc.

Does anybody know a good thing to study? I just remodeled the way I go about drawing.

Also, is it best to now go ahead and start isolating body parts to understand them better?

That's what I'm going to do now, but I'm certain there's a good, fast way to go about it.

I've already read his book on figure drawing for all it's worth, but I might head back to it to see if there's anything new in there.

So I have a Wacom Bamboo craft and starts to do weird stuff like clicking randomly and stuff, so I guess its time to buy a new one

Witch graphic tablet can I get that it's decent and cheap? my budget would be 100 dlls aprox.
I mostly draw a shitty web comic now. Nothing fancy.

They seem the same, but they come with different software.
The first one comes with a copy of clip studio, which is pretty good. If you already have a painting program you like, just get the least expensive one.

Is it better to draw art with no varying width in your line work or not

Ive noticed a lot of asian artists tend to draw with very thin lines or if they use a thick brush tool, it doesn't really emphasize distance or weight like westerners do in their line work. However, this appears to be slightly more difficult.

Although this does not apply to every artist, there are some exceptions. But is pretty common.
13 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Generally speaking I'd say varied line weight is better to do and easier, the only ones I've seen pull off flat brush properly are people that have been doing it for decades.
>>
>inb4 someone posts that shitty sunglasses spider-dude inking tutorial

It's mostly a matter of personal taste and what you're going for. Line variety makes it much easier to indicate the texture and weight of something, so if your end result is supposed to just be lineart, it's usually a better idea to make use of line weight.

No line-variety works great in combination with a cellshaded anime / cartoon look, which is probably why lots of japanese artists use it. It also creates a really appealing look when a confident artist uses it for sketching, like 0033, Demizu Pezuka, Krenz, Bahi etc.

2 weeks, 3 max.

Seeing how most competent artist can finish a color commission with background in under a week I would say about a week.

Obviously depends on the level of detail and the skill of the artist, anywhere from a day to multiple weeks
