All intel has to do to fix their thermals is sell bare-die chips and refuse to warranty cracking the die.

Problem: They'd get so many broken dies that people would stop buying them eventually.

>sell bare-die chips
and market them as an X SKU for true overclocking enthusiasts
K SKU and lower would still have IHS
and ofc, X SKU would be more expensive

Hey /g/,

My boss has told me we need to purchase a server so we can host all our shit locally instead of paying some company to do it.

What sort of minimum requirements would I be looking at?

We are just a small/medium sized business and will only be hosting our CRM system on it at first, but will be looking to add other shit at some stage.

>what sort of minimum requirements would I be looking at?
Shouldn't you know that? What are the min reqs for the CRM app?
Also hop on Dell Refurbished and check out what they have there, seeing as you don't know what you're doing it should be a start to look at some preconfigured servers
>>
First off, I just want to make sure you're not thinking of "minimum requirements" in terms of the same specs with which you'd build a home PC.

The minimum requirements you're likely to face first, even when you're small in scale, are
1) responsible data storage,
2) good networking access, and
3) power.

At minimum you want a discrete RAID controller so that your data is semi-protected from single (or, later on, multiple) drive failure. I say semi-protected because *RAID IS NOT A BACKUP.* Part of responsible data storage will also include a backup solution. That means separate drives in house and, sooner rather than later, off-site backup too. The upshot here is to take your expected data storage needs and multiply by three or four. That's how much storage you'll need up front.

As for networking, make sure that everyone who needs to touch the data can get to it speedily. 10 gigabit ethernet is actually reasonably accessible from the start. Enterprise level switching equipment isn't something you're going to be able to avoid for long. And as this thing scales up, you will need to keep this in mind.

Finally comes power. You're on the hook for uptime. At the outset I recommend using rack-mount cases with support for dual redundant power supplies. The next level of protection there is for the breaker or building power taking down just your server; a small UPS or two can handle that. But then there's eventually going to come a time when you need pricey gear to keep your system uptime in the 99+% range.

So minimum requirement? 3x expected storage (use reliable brand drives) in RAID and backup, a quality 10 Gb networking solution, power redundancy and a rack to start mounting these cases.
>>
>>61326271
just buy xeons, dual xeons would be great!
I'm sure your company will benefit from that!

just don't buy AMD, they're indian tech.

I'll watch but I'd appreciate a good explanation as to why you choose to do something the way you do. Are you going to start from scratch or will you use bits and pieces from other os's?

I'm going to give a good start explanation at the start like I'm gonna do X with processor X and write X, then start from 0 with a hello world assembly, then one that takes input from the console, then a PCI / USB driver, progressively from 0 to end

Literally every single vulnerability in Windows, Linux and OSX can be exploited using a payload or shell code.

Why doesn't anybody make an operating system that blocks shell codes and payloads? Isn't that gonna make it a lot more secure than the present day operating systems?

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

That would break RPC

What's the best way to keep the i7 4790k cooled down? Not overclocking it. I installed the Hyper Evo 212 and idle temps are about 35-40 celsius. Is that pretty normal you think? Think there's any way I could decrease temps by 10 degrees? I just dust sprayed it out.

I don't know how accurate Core Temp 1.9 is.

I'm asking because I was just playing a game at 1440p60fps, and recording it too, through NVIDIA's capture thingy, and went to check on Core Temp, and I had reached 100 celsius. Is the Evo212 really that shitty?

The 212+ EVO is a meme cooler, but not THAT bad.
A slightly larger rice corn sized dip of thermal paste after cleaning old gunk with alcohol should do you good.
