I had a home server with SSH running on it and the only way to log in was using key-based auth. Didn't stop my log file from recording dozens of password guesses every second coming from russia, china, pakistan, iran...

Custom domain. Instead of giving out your email as "[email protected]" you can use "[email protected]". Most of the time the cost is minimal. Google charges $5/month. I use Zoho Mail which is free if you don't send or receive tons of mail.
