You're not going to gain strength, but if you keep lifting then you can at least minimize the loss. Do HIIT instead of regular cardio and do a 500cal deficit and you should be able to lose weight without losing your precious gains.

but if I am such a rookie should I instead get a fitness trainer to help me get good at the machines and get a basic understanding of what I should be doing and how to set proper goals? Can I rely on 24 hour fitness to get a good instructor?

Cardio only or getting split times outside of a boat if you are a rower.
Useless for upper back or strength at all, I guess you could jack the resistance up but even then it would hit your legs waaaay more than your back
