I hurt my sternum doing weighted dips a couple years ago, and my bench has sucked shit ever since. Every time I go too heavy or do too much volume it starts to hurt again. I've discovered I can do incline bench and close grip without bothering it, so I'm going to hammer those instead.

Redpill me on the "best" routine for a "novice" lifter.
I'm currently doing Blaha's ICF workout. I know the guy talks some utter shit at times, but his routine is just a mix-mash of shit he got from other people and seems to work. An SS/SL type 5x5 full body, heavy compound workout, with some extra accessory work for volume.
I'm about half-way to the magic 1/2/3/4 and enjoy the workout, but have a few friends who say I should do things "differently", with a convenient lack of explaining exactly how. They're strong guys like who train decently and who do heavy work (building trade) but while they say a routine like ICF/SS/SL is "shit, you don't want to be doing that" they can't explain why or what to do instead.
I'm essentially looking to building strength (working so far) before moving onto a more advanced routine. Since day one I've been set against the standard bro-split, which works well if you can lift serious weight, but is pointless if you're curling 20lbs.
So I'm looking for ideas. What are the pros and cons of the popular "novice" routines? What would you recommend and why?

I decided to go on a run, on a running program, for 40 minutes I alternate 60 seconds of running then 90 seconds of walking. Because I'm a beginner. But I only made it for 30 minutes. I had to stop because my chest and shoulers hurt so bad and my heart beat felt super crazy like not normal at all. Also I was salivating like crazy.
I didn't know you could be too out of shape to run. Even for only 60 seconds at a time.
