I'm planning to install a camera on my apartment (It was robbed, they took money and a computer), I'm moving out soon and will take the camera system with me. The official police is useless, but I have the cops personal contacts and they asked that any info I get on crimes could be sent to them because they know most criminals here by face.

I'm planning to buy pic related, which is a wireless camera that can be controled using my cellphone. But I have an issue, I need to make the camera record only when movement happens and send that file into a hosting service. (I'm thinking of a google drive but idk). Why I need that? Because the only valuabl thing in my apartment will be the computer which the camera is connected too. Can anyone shed some advice on how to do this?

Buy a decent camera you cheap fuck.

Maybe one with a DVR and cloud storage for when you don't secure or hide the DVR.

Also more then 1 channel
>>

This. Nanny cams are not designed for your needs. Most are shit quality and just have basic "idiot proof" features.

If you are serious about having useful surveillance, get a standalone recorder and decent cameras to cover the key areas. It would be better to get wider angled cameras that can cover a whole room than motion tracking ones, which are usually big and expensive. I'd also recommend getting the highest picture quality cameras you can afford, don't bother with anything less than 1080p or 1.3 megapixels. I'd recommend IP cameras and recorders, analog technology is slowly being phased out.

Seems like you are only going to be indoors, but if the camera faces a bright window, the contrast from the outside light can cause some cheaper cameras to have problems keeping a useful light balance, some cameras come with advanced chips to balance contrast for such situations, but they are a bit pricier. Worth noting though, could make your camera useless otherwise, and thus a complete waste of money during daytime. At night this usually isn't a problem unless bright lights shine directly in to the camera. Alternatively you can just set it up so that no direct light shines in it, but some burglars know this and can effectively disable the camera by shining a flashlight in to it.

Most modern CCTV recorders also supports "white-out" alarms(along with motion detection and tampering), so if something like a flashlight or spraypaint is used to disable the camera, at least an alarm will be triggered.

Also check your local laws on the image quality standards for using surveillance footage in court. Cameras can help track down suspects, but the footage itself might not be of a high enough quality to count as legal evidence for conviction in court.

Alternatively, you could just make it look like you have cameras, which can deter burglars. Just get some cheap dome lookalikes with LEDs in them and place them where they are visible to any prospecting burglars.

Lets rig this shit up.

1. Remote alarms with motion detection. These are just motion detectors with alarms that are controlled with a small remote that can go on your key chain. This will also piss off people living in the apartment.

2. Camera system. Get something good, not cheap shit, and buy more then one. You want to see their face, not pixels. You can buy a system with a DVR for a few $100.

/diy/ cred: Use a few good web cams, a small dev board (raspberry pi for example), and a battery back up system (APC on that you can buy at walmart is fine). Add a USB HDD for video storage, but also setup a cloud backup too.

3. Video Storage. Have your video files saved to a cloud. If niggers steal your DVR or computer, there goes your videos. You can have a cloud app setup to only copy the folder with the videos and set it to back up every so often based on the time frame you want.

4. Always keep a light on or a TV. This can help deter thieves. Fake cameras not as much because if you know what to look for on them (most of them are the same) then they will know it is fake.

5. Get a dog. Depending on your apartment, see what breeds you can have. But if it barks too much, people will have a bitch fit.

To lazy for this? Then just buy a canary. Its almost everything but you pay a monthly fee. Too cheap? Then do something else.

When I was living in a house with a roommate years ago, I notice my cigarette packs were open and missing a few. The fat ass's boyfriend was stealing one or two here and there. Also shit was moved a round. I hooked up a webcam to my PC and set it up to take pictures when there was movement. Had a lot of pictures of them in my room dicking around. But on problem I had was that it you take pictures at random ass time.

How practicable are these kinds of door / window / wall? Wouldn't it be super vulnerable to a storm and also to cold? Are there any big benefits of this style of building, why is it still so present in japanese culture?
29 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I thought they used that style mostly indoors? Does Japan even get cold winters?
>>
>>1160830
Yes
>>
>>1160789
Japanese style houses work well in Japanese climate with Japanese people living in it with Japanese customs and habits.

No it is stupid to build a house without insulation in countries that builds houses with insulation.

If you have to ask, don't. Don't pretend you are in Japan, you are not.

Any other tool similar to the Dremel 3000?
I'm looking for something cheaper but with a similar power, i need it for making a CNC

You won't be happy with the out come. They don't have the bearings needed for axial loading of milling.

The bearings for the Tool?
>>
>>1160688
Correct. If you want a cheap head for a cnc setup look into a wood router. They have more power and better bearings than dremel-like tools. Can be found cheaply at garage sales and cl.

So I live in an apartment and this morning my gf managed to break the adjustable shower head fixture.
It's a seperate piece that comes off the bar, it just seems as though the bar has no way for the piece to exit for me to replace the fixture.
Any ideas*

Yeah. But if you have no idea on how to do it, then it would be cheaper and easier for you to just buy a new fixture.
>>
I'm probably missing something tho.
A different pic would help.

A lot of those bars have end caps that pop off somehow so the slider can be freed.

What could do with 720 acres of land? It has 3 lakes, a river running through it, forest patches, and meadows. I don't really know what else to do than build a nice get away cabin and go fishing/hunting. What do you guys suggest?

Why would you want to anything else? If it were me (I hope it is one day desu), I'd maybe use 5 acres max for my home and gardens, and then keep the rest exactly as nature intended.

Totally depends on the car.

Is it a 2017 M5? Get it fixed properly
Is it a shitbox with 200k miles on it that just has to last another year? Seal it up with muffler tape, reinforce mountings near tape, call it a day.

or if it's the exhaust in OP pic, a 7 dollar muffler clamp at napa will seal that up no prob.

Pipe zippo project1 disassembled.jpg

Hello ladies and gentlemen

I bought a Zippo knockoff a long time ago for the purposes of making a pipe Zippo for cheap. It was great and it worked fine for a year, and then the shitty enamel epoxy (or whatever) gave in and broke off into a trillion pieces.

The inner plate that holds the flint tube and cam spring falls out and does not stay in place. Thus liquid leaks out, the cam gets zero tension, and the flint tube is not aligned. How can I properly mount it in the case and glue it back on?

For reference: The cheap knockoff zippo seems to be made out of very thin plate steel
23 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Not really /diy/ but you can just send any Zippo in for repair and tell them you want a pipe insert. It'll come back with a shiny new pipe insert replacing the existing normal insert.
>>
>>1160372
But will they do it for a fake Zippo?
>>
>>1160379
Of course not. Garage sale season is starting, so get looking for a good cheap real one.

What does /diy/ think of Earthships?

They seem to be pretty darn DIY in most cases, and the reuse of old materials is quite interesting to me.

I always thought they were only for dry desert climates, but I recently saw one in Alberta that changed my mind on this.

There's a website where you can find them for sale, I've been poking around just to check out the architecture.

I think calling them earthships should land you in a mental institution.

They're nifty, although I personally find the use of glass bottles to be unbelievably tacky, I much prefer bare clay walls.
>>
>>1160075
Heh, yeah, it instantly calls up images of crunchy hippies, which I think turns a lot of people off the idea right away.

I agree on the bottles. I've not seen too many that look good, most seem to just throw them in there randomly.

So I need a generator to fix up my travel trailer as its at a site with no power.

Is there any generators that are decent and affordable? I really like the smaller honda ones but they're fucking expensive.

are the cheap costco bought generators any good? or the harbour freight / princess auto / no name generators any good?

tl;dr generators

>harbour freight

yes, actually. its one of the few things worth a shit at HF. it will bog down if you are trying to use a 9" angle grinder or something similarly ridiculous, but they are good little gens.
>>
>>1160064
I actually plan on using a grinder, but a smaller one. Those Harbor freight / princess auto generators are about $350-1000

im in Canada so Harbour freight is just like princess auto.

Might have to take a look at them for real
>>
>>1160044

you'll pay more for a Honda now but you will save in the long run. especially something like this you should pay a bit extra and get something you want, something reliable and that parts are readily available. you buy cheap you run the risk of not being able to get parts if anything breaks and things likely will break, its cheaper for a reason, costs have to be cut somewhere and its the materials used therefore build quality that suffers.

I have used a Honda generator that was a first time starter, everytime, even if it had been standing for months and not very well maintained, just one good pull on the pull cord and away it went, that thing was battered, bruised, dropped, scraped, upside down, still purred away perfectly.

I have also used cheaper generators, sometimes they work well, sometimes they don't, things break that can't be fixed, sometimes it would run, sometimes it would take 30 mins to get it running, you could guarantee if you left it for a month with no use you would have a pain in the ass getting it started.

moral of the story, don't cheap out unless you want added hassle in your life.

I wanna sew this webbing by hand with just a needle and thread. Everything online just talks about sewing machine or awls. Is it even possible to do by hand? Will the results be terrible? What stitch?
12 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1159893
an awl is a hand tool.
if you like your skin full of needle shrapnel then go right ahead.
>>
>>1159893
I've sewn these things before. The proper style is to stitch a square then stitch an X in the square. The proper stitch is the one that comes with the instructions with the awl. The reason everyone uses an awl is that the material is hard to go through with a regular needle, so you use your palm on the awl to save your hands.

There are some sewing machines that are tough enough to do it. Get a recommendation from a sewing expert if that's the way you want to go.
>>
>>1159893
If you do it by hand it probably won't hold very long.

I'm living in an apartment building in Europe. I'm having an ant problem. Usually they'd appear once a year and I'd kill them and clean them with permetrin. Now they've started to emerge from the ceiling from the openings where my radiator pipes come from the upper neighbor. I need to seal those holes, I was thinking about using silicone but I'm not sure if ants will chew through silicone. Any other suggestions what to seal the small openings ? I can't use any hard material because the pipes need some room to breathe during summer (winter).

I suggest you make friends with them. The are probably only coming into your apartment because they are lonely.
>>
>>1159884
not sure if it's available in europe but check out terro, it's pretty much a liquid borax that ants just can't resist. they'll die off in a week and then when the eggs hatch they'll also eat it and die.

What do you guys think of Ridgid? Is the lifetime warranty worth it? I hear it's a pain in the ass to even use
41 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
>>1159761
I have heard bad things regarding their power tools and shady "lifetime" battery replacement.

Their pipe wrenches and other pipe-related tools are probably still among the best. Also the bench vises they sell nowadays are re-branded Peddinghaus German-made forged steel vises which are pretty sweet. Warranty wouldn't be a huge concern to me with these kinds of things.

If you're looking for pipe stuff, there's usually plenty of Ridgid to be had at flea markets or even yard sales because they've made millions of the stuff for so many decades. Even eBay prices can be quite low because there's just so much supply.
>>
weekend /diy/ guy reporting in, take the rest with a grain of salt

>cast iron table saw w/ dado
>5 hp shop vac
>router for router table

I see Ridgid as a tier above Ryobi, so when I need/desire/want more power, I'll "upgrade" to Ridgid. I don't see, in my hobby, shelling out hundreds for top tier brand names. I started with all Ryobi because the one battery fits all concept really appealed to me. Then, when I came across a project that needed a stronger tool, went up a tier. So far I've only needed the router because ryobi just isn't powerful enough, not dissing them, I never expected it to handle masonry work.

Their warranty is incredible. SAVE THE FUCKING BOX UNTIL YOU REGISTER HOLY FUCK

There is a number on the box, no where else, not even on the fucking tool, that they require to register. After that though, you can't beat free batteries for life or parts that wear out over time and replace for free.

Again, being a weekend warrior, I have zero complaints about both brands. I am a Home depot fanboy only because they have a hotdog stand and Lowe's doesn't.
