I paid $40 for this electric hammer, did i get ripped off?

Nope. I bought mine for $320.
Its a bit bigger than the one pictured, but it really helps keep the workpiece at a good workable temperature.

Less time your piece spends in the forge the better.

I'd say you got a bargain

So I moved into my new apartment at the end of February, and to make a long story short, I have free water (but NOT free electricity, interestingly). Water's included in the rent, and I'm permitted to use as much of it as I want - I'm locked into a long-term lease so my rent can't go up, and the contract implies that there's nothing my landlord can do.

So, my question is this: Would it be feasible to make a small hydroelectric plant and divert my free water through it to reduce my power bill? My water discharge rate is surprisingly high - before I moved in I thought I'd need a Seinfeld-esque black market showerhead for better pressure while showering, but I don't. I feel that if I diverted all the water through a small hydroelectric plant, I could reduce my power consumption for small items (like lamps) by ~40%.

I've been taking advantage of this for the past month, filling up bottles of water as fast as my sink dispenses, and nobody's said anything.

Technically, you can make a waste water hydro generator, but it will be rather low power. You'd be able to charge say a smartphone or some AAs rather easily I'm sure. Anything more than that will take some serious planning.

As far as powering it with water that isn't waste water, well, if you do that, fuck you.
>>
>>1154961
The cost of making the equipment would exceed the money saved on your power bill by quite a lot. It would probably take you a decade or more to break even.
>>
>>1154964
Hey, it's MY water, I can do what I want with it.

>>1154969
I bet I could make a small turbine using parts from my dryer to spin the shaft of a small DC motor. It wouldn't cost me much at all.

Also, do you think that I could wrap some copper tubes on a fan and pipe my cold water through that in the summer for free air conditioning?

Any /gardeners/ here?

I'm on my first garden and noticing some spots appear on my pepper plants.

My research has pointed me to it either being Bacterial leaf spot or Septoria leaf spot. I wanted to know what everyone else thinks.

I'd like to avoid removing the plants if possible, but of course I will if I need too.

hey /diy/

also, i'm looking for a simple circuit consisting of a laser diode, photodetector (like a photosensitive resistor) and maybe an op amp comparative. The purpose is that i could print it out in a pcb and then place it in-line between an appliance and wall power. when light from the laser stops hitting the photodetecting element, the PCB acts as a shut-off switch for the appliance, shunting power from the wall straight to ground.
i know basic circuit design but not much else, any pointers?
anyone know of any circuit schematics i could use for reference?

> shunting power from the wall straight to ground.

This is going to shut off the appliance and everything else on the same breaker.
>>
>>1163750
Why not use a Triac instead of shunting your power to ground? What is the end goal here. The triac would allow you to control the 120v with a 5v interface.
>>
>>1163750
What appliance? A SSR could work.

Serious, I've bought test NiMH batteries from multiple ebay sellers, ali, amazon, and a few online sites and none of them were close to their ratings. Normally like 30% or more underrated. Also incredibly light compared to 'real' cells I have. Does anyone have a good supplier for this shit?

Is there really no way to rustproof car parts without painting them?

I planned to have the welded patches visible by applying just car wax without painting over them first, but apparently that wouldn't be enough to keep them from rusting. How can I keep the metal visible AND make it rustproof?

Slap some grease on the metal, It will isolate the metal from the environment and still be easily removable with solvent.

How to build a solar phone charger
Pls help
7 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1163460
Google it dumbass.
>>
Take a solar panel, attach some form of load-leveling and charge management circuit, attach that to a USB socket, connect it to your phone, put it in the sun.

The bigger the solar panel the more it'll generate, in general terms at least.

For bonus points use the panel to charge a power bank instead!
>>
Spoiler alert unless you get a decent sized solar panel and its baking hot outside solar phone chargers are pretty shitty

Any chair nerds on /diy/ ?

I am thinking about designing and making a chair along the lines of this one I found on the internet. I have no idea who made it though, and I would like to see some more pictures of it and perhaps some dimensions.

Does anyone have an idea what brand this chair is? Perhaps even a product number?

Thank you very much

Hello,

I'm going to invest in some young folks at my local hackerspace that want to sell some stuff. I'll basically borrow them 500€ to 1000€. What would be a good way to make a fair deal with them.
Give them 500€ and then
>10% on their returns, as soon as they make more than 500€?
Or simply some fixed amount? (but then they could also just go to a bank)

If we were a kid needing money to build your stuff and hoped it would sell, what would be okay 4u?

Thanks.

>>
>>1162869
It's not like I care much about the 500, I mostly want to help them, but I'm all ear if you know how to set up a binding contract etc. Just sign a paper with peoples name, address and obligations, I guess
>>
>>1162873
The point is, there's a reason why banks do a ton of background checks and have fuckhuge contracts when they lend money.

Furthermore, there are hella laws about money lending.

At worst, you're gonna look like a predatory lender when you actually have to get mean about getting your money back.
At best, you're giving away money to people who don't have the means or the inclination to pay it back.

If you are making furniture and you are using a brad nailer please have someone kick you in the crotch. Being a poor fucker I have bought most of my furniture used and restored it. There is nothing worse than getting a decent piece of furniture and finding that the lazy fuck that made it used brads. They are staples retarded big brother. You can't get them out easily without doing damage, they don't even do their job very well and they look like shit.

The ONLY reason you would ever use them, is that using a screw is too much hassle. If using a screw is too much hassle you are either a lazy ass piece of shit or you are working for a penny-pinching miser that is more concerned with keeping costs low then producing quality work.

I'm building a flight controller for a drone for a project in my Micro-controllers class. We're using the TM4C123GH6PM and pretty much buying all of the other components for the drone. I've been messing around with getting RTC values to calculate the time between loop iterations for a PID algorithm and I'm curious; is there a better way than using the hibernate modules? I'm not sure if there are any repercussions to using that or if it's the right thing to use for a drone project. I guess I'm just not sure whether or not you can use the hibernate module in RTC mode without actually puting the Tiva in hibernate mode. Also, general embedded systems thread?

I plan to use plexiglass or acryl (plastic) so it will look like "box" with clear front, something like led floodlights
