Has anyone here had to move long distance with your animals? How did it go? Any advice?

I have to move 2 dogs and 2 cats on a 10-12 hour drive.

It's surprisingly non-stressful with dogs, provided they don't get carsick or are at least used to kennels. Just let them out every couple hours to use the bathroom, drink, and maybe have a snack.

Cats are unknown territory for me though. Sorry.
>>
I moved cross country with a cat, 26 fish ( all over 6"), a colony of dubia roaches and 13 geckos. Only lost one fish and everyone else did excellently.

My cat has never been in a per carrier, so we put a fleece blanket in a rubermaid container without the lid. He slept in there almost the entire trip. Let him go do his business every time we hit a rest stop and he was awake, luckily he doesn't mind being on a leash.
>>
when I was 7, my family moved from Mississippi to Virginia (~16 hour drive). we had 4 people, 2 cats, and a bird in the car. we had an old Honda minivan, we put a litterbox on the floor in the space in front of the sliding door. we let the cats roam free throughout the car. they were stressed at times but ended up laying in the empty seats and wandering around the car. if we were going to stop and open the car doors we would put them in their carriers. the bird sat in his cage at the foot of my sister who was riding shotgun, he chirped happily to the sound of the engine the whole trip. we stopped to stay with friends along the way one night and let the cats hang out in the closed garage. the garage was a little messy and we almost couldn't find poor Licorice. overall, having your cats out of the carrier isn't the safest option, but we were mostly on the highway and they could at least trench and lay down comfortably without the carrier. it kinda sucked for me because I had to sit next to the litterbox lol.

what's with all the pit bull hate here? i can't tell if it's a meme or not

i didn't expect you guys to subscribe to media opinions and stuff like that but damn

i've lived with and owned pit bulls and bully type breeds most of my life and i can honestly say I've never had an issue with human aggression

they can be dog aggressive but with proper socialization there's really no need to worry, you just need to stay on guard as you would with any large dog breed

the only aggressive pits ive ever met were taken care of horribly, underfed, not socialized at all, left outside to wander all day and night, and forced to breed

shouldn't the blame then be on the owners and not the breed?

my dog is very well behaved and since she's a rescue, she does have some issues but im working hard with her to correct them

idk it's just something obnoxious to see when you guys supposedly love animals

If you are a responsible dog owner then you should know that potentially dangerous situations could happen with any breed of dog, and know that ultimately the owner is responsible for any all consequences of that dogs actions. It is up to the owner to keep the animal out of these situations, and to properly train and socialize the pet if they are going to be bringing it around people and other animals.
Of course there are various degrees depending on the breed, no body has to worry about a toy breed mauling people. Regardless, my point is caution and responsibilities should be observed with ALL breeds. Pitbulls may or may not be prone to aggression, but if you are already watching out for that, and correctly controlling your dog what does it matter?

Okay, so my dumbass little sister and her friend (both 6) found a mommy cat and her kitten. Somehow, they lead the pair back to our house, and basically I'm stuck with taking care of this kitten because the mother left her at our doorstep. I went to the store, got some food for her, fed her, and even removed a tick (that I burned with a lighter, because fuck that shit). I've tried giving the kitten back to the mother, but she just leaves the fucking kitten, what the fuck? I have no idea who they belong to and all that, but damn, why is the mother just neglecting her child like that? I made some cozy warm house for the kitten to be in (he/she is currently sleeping there).

So please help me with a few things
Why did the cat just leave her child like that? Was it because I cleaned her up? Also, I can feel the kitten's bones when I pet her on her back, surely that's not normal? She must have been starving.
And how do I even take care of a kitten? Like how do I know how old it is and all that? What do I do with it? I'm ready to help him out till I can find a good home for him, but I can't do that right now.

Also the kitten is like really fucking cute no homo, but I don't want to turn on the light or use flash to get a picture of him, because I'm afraid it will wake him up (or her w/e).

the momma must've decided that your house was a safe site. she'll probably be back when she's done hunting. if you can, leave a window open for her- it would be a really great thing if you could trap her and get her spayed- many place will do that for free if it's a feral.

it's pretty important to figure out her age before anyone can tell you how to take care of her. either take a pic or google how to tell. any idea how much she weighs?
>>
>>2177953
No idea how much she weighs, I'm afraid of picking her up because I don't want to hurt her. I can get a picture of her as soon as she wakes up.

This is in Norway, so I highly doubt that the mother cat doesn't belong to someone, so I don't want to mess with it, but the kitten looked a bit fugd up so I decided to take care of it. Also I let the mother cat in, but she just started jumping on my sister's bird cage and the birds shat themselves so I had to make her leave.
>>
>>2177959
On all honesty anon, you taking care of a kitten will increase the odds of thr thing dying than just having left it be. Taking care of what I can only assume is a very young kitten is an around the clock job and require a ton of knowhow. I would put the kitten back where you found it and just hope.

If momma doesn't come back, try to find an animal shelter. It is seriously hard to take care of young kittens, and you won't even have a Chace if you have a job.

Does anyone have experience with backyard goats or sheep? I have roughly a half acre which was enough to raise a good number of chickens. I no longer raise chickens, but I was interested in goats and sheep. I've been reading through Minnesota and NC State's agriculture extension websites that suggest that you can sustain 2-4 goats per acre, so it's at least possible to have a single goat or sheep in my backyard. I was wondering if anyone here could share some resources or experience on the subject.

For goats you have to be careful, they can jump really high, they eat mostly bushes not grass like sheeps, also they like to climb, great pets the only thing you have to be cautious

>>2177909
They eat everything.
I had a goat eat my name tag off my shirt at a zoo as a child while on a field trip. Fucking things creep me out.

>>

haha, ok. I am an architecture student and for my final project of this period I have to search formats, functions and analogies from nature to design an intervention where people can enjoy the place.
Perhaps documentaries and studies more targeted to anatomy of the animals would help me a lot.

Thinking about getting a couple of Red Cherry Shrimp, but i've never owned an aquatic creature before.

Any tips on getting the tank set up and maintaining a healthy bunch of shrimpies?
20 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Your tank must be mature and fully cycled as shrimp are very sensitive to ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. While their bio load is pretty much non existent, they do require stable water parameters.
>>
>>2177643
I've heard the term "cycled" a lot but im not quite clear on the concept... do i just let some plants sit in it for a week or two?

Hey /an/ my male cockatiel is afraid of my hands. I know the best way to get them to trust your hands is to get them to eat from them, but he won't accept a treat from my hands. Are there any tricks to getting him to eat from my hand?
Also, I think a lot of his antisocial behavior is due to him not getting enough attention or entertainment, should I get a female for him? Would that make him friendlier?

He's also only about 9 months old, so I'm hoping he'll grow out of this phase
>>
I'm guessing you only got him recently. Just give it more time and keep up with interacting with him more. You can also place him somewhere that can allow him to observe your presence often so that he understands you're not a threat and becomes accustomed to you. It can take a very long time to get a bird to become comfortable around people. It's a process the requires a lot of patience and persistence. Buying another bird can backfire if you want your bird to become friendlier with you because he will become more focused on the other bird rather than you.

Hey /an/ I would like to own a couple of chickens later in my life.
y'know, for eggs and crap, I've always liked the idea of owning chickens too.
However, I know close to nothing about owning them.
I read somewhere that it's better to have them free-range(or something) because if a fox is hunting them, they have a better chance living if they can run about, rather than being cornered.
I would greatly appreciate any tips/tricks/advice you have to offer.
I plan on owning 1 or 2, maybe 3?

>>
It really just depends on where you live. I'm assuming its at least semi-rural since free ranging is an option. As a kid, my family had about twenty chickens and we had to keep them in a run because there were many, many hawks and opossums that roamed about. We could let them out every now and then so long as they were under supervision. Of course it helps that we had a dog who was friendly towards them and would bark at hawks and the likes.

If you're thinking of no more than five chickens, you can really do anything you like, just make plans for them to have a secure little place where they can roost and be safe at night, and I suggest maybe a small closed run so they can get outside and still be safe on days you won't be around to watch them.

Were you thinking about getting them as chicks or older?

Hawks will kill chickens if they aren't fully enclosed, so will dogs. I don't recommend letting them run around unless you're out there with them. If your chickos are having a hot day, freeze a mixture of corn and water in a muffin tray. Don't let them eat their own eggs. If they do put a couple golf balls in their nesting boxes so they think eggs are now inedible. One more thing, if you plan on building your own coop (recommended if you are good with tools) you don't need a nesting box for each bird. They don't all lay at the same time and are happy with sharing boxes.

And for the actual final comment, if you do let them free range put a few guinea hens in the flock to scare predators away. They're very noisy.

What breed do you want?

If you want them more for a pet, go with silkies. They're fucking adorable.

this is my cat. hes an outdoor cat, but i've taken him inside on special occasion. hes been getting bullied by other cats and hes very badly scratched on the face. he cant get up and walk, im guessing he has an injury around his tummy i cant see because he doesnt want me to pick him up. hes also got a pretty bad leg injury. how do i treat his cuts? I was thinking alcohol but im looking for something not too harsh, just to get him healed in a few days or so. something that wont hurt him. maybe a cream or gel?

Get him to a vet, and make him an indoor cat. I'll be nice and say that indoor cats love longer, happier lives. Letting a cat go outdoors is letting the cat own YOU

I have a hypothesis why small dogs are yappy.
All dogs instinctually bark at things that are bigger than themselves and seem to pose a threat.
But for small dogs, there are simply a lot more things that're bigger than them, so they have more things to bark at.
Does this sound right?
22 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Maybe but was is worth making a new thread on /an/?
>>
Not all small dogs are yappy though.
That is the fault of the owner, it has nothing to do with the dogs size.
>>
>>2175698
It's probably because a dog wants to protect it's family instinctively and maybe small dogs realize in some weird way, that they are physically useless. Hence the phrase: "Beware the dog that doesn't bark" because he's gonna fuck your shit up or die trying

I got a new puppy yesterday, six weeks and 5.2 pounds, and took it to the vet today for a checkup and shots. It was a walk-in clinic so the vet saw us, gave the dog a shot and squirted some medicine in it's mouth and we were out the door in two minutes.

They gave us a pill to give the dog and when to bring her back in. The pill just said to give it to her once a month, so I crushed it up in her food when I got back home.

Come to find out when they called us back to tell her she had roundworms, they said that she wouldn't need the pill until Saturday. But she seemed fine, so I thought it wasn't that bad.

Now it's been 10 hours and she's been vomiting. She refuses food, drinks a bit but she vomits out the water as well and she shits out nothing but water. I'm worried about the dog becoming dehydrated, and wonder if she'll be okay long enough to take her to the vet in the morning or if I should just take her to the emergency vet.

I wouldn't risk it. I would take her in, but I'm naturally paranoid. the situation sounds horrible, though.
>>
If its been that long and she cant keep anything down best to just take her to the emergency vet. That actually sounds like parvo. Best of luck.
>>
>>2175575

Oh, she hasn't been vomiting for 10 hours. It's just been 10 hours since I've given her the pill.

She's only been doing this is the past hour and a half.
