Share us the story of your first pet /an/!
My first pet was a red Betta fish named "Nemo" when I was... Well, I'm 20 and this was after Finding Nemo so I must have been eight at tops. I saw him at the mall and begged my mom to get him. A few weeks later she did. I remember he was in one of those very small fish tanks they sell fish in. We didn't know better so we kept him in it, cleaned him every few days, and fed him.
Needless to say he died within a few months. I remember he died a week or so before Christmas.
Adopted poodle named Buffy. This was well before the vampire slayer tv show/movie, haven't a clue what the story behind the name was. She previously lived with an elderly woman who was no longer able to care for her.
Not very friendly dog. She bit me a few times. I was quite young so I don't remember if I did anything to piss her off.
>Be roughly 7 (I think? Was in second grade)
>Go to county fair
>win goldish in that "throw ball into this small cup" shit
>was about an inch at best
>name him Adam
>Talk mom into taking me to pet store the next day after school
>get a 20 gallon or so tank
>Bare bottom, HOB filter, and air stone
>feed him every other day
>eventually get a grey loach of some kind and a calico goldfish
>3 fish, I end up getting close to them as a kid
>fast forward about 5-6 years
>Adam is now about 6 inches long, 2 tall
>Creeper (the loach) and Cal (Calico (sidenote:lel) are both more or less full-sized
>add guppies
>Adam eats a majority of them, others die in filter
>everyone dies in tank despite proper care
>Literally cry and bury them all.
>Except the guppies. Fuck them.
Fun fact: as he was changing color with age, I actually thought he was dying and called a local vet. My mom still gets a kick outta that.
I was kind of a stupid kid until about 16, really.
Caught an opossum in a trap in my backyard this morning. I kindof want to tame it, any idea on how to go about this? I was thinking about watching it until it goes back home, follow it there, and leave it some food.
If its an adult good luck. Opossums are pretty docile animals, but absolutely no wild mammal makes an even half decent pet unless you get it as a baby. If you just want it around and semi cool with you leave food in your yard, it'll be back.
>>2204534
You won't.
I work at a wildlife rehab center and hand raising babies is only a 50/50 that they'll be comfortable around humans.
Anything old enough to be away from its mother? No way. Let it go.
Beat it until it can't move, then care for it until it's healthy again. Repeat until it loves you.
Hey guys, I have a 17 year old half Schnauzer that I have a question about, lately we have been having a very hard time with her because she has extremely limited range of movement. In fact she constantly falls onto her back legs and can not get up without our help. It's become a problem because she's been going to the bathroom in the house sometimes, not because she doesn't know but because her mobility is so bad that she can't get up to go outside herself anymore.
Are there any kind of joint or bone formulas we could give her that will actually help? I thought about getting something off the shelf but I wasn't sure if I'd be wasting my money or not. She can walk if she's already standing, but she never stays on her feet for long before she needs help.
isn't this the kind of thing you should talk with your vet about?
>>2204530
we don't have a vet sad to say. I was reading a discussion on here before about people that had this problem with very old dogs and were able to restore some freedom of movement with supplements, so I thought I'd ask.
It's all we can really afford to do.

I knew this was going to come up.

I have two 16 week old Rhodesian Ridgebacks. I was going to walk my local trail and I wanted to begin to bring them along. Are they to young right now?
Not sure how fast this board moves. So I will just post some photos of them to bypass the time.
Are oscarfish good eatin'? Apparently fishing hobbyist groups organize trips down to Florida canals and shit to catch oscars that breed and have been let loose by their owners.
I wouldn't eat any freshwater fish caught out of a Florida canal, which is a nicer way of saying drainage ditch with water in it. Unless you like your fish to taste like mud and trash of course.
>>2204493
In Florida Canals most are high in Mercury, but they do look like they have nice white meat.
freshwater fish don't usually taste very good in general, and yeah, given the fact they're in gross florida water i would probably pass.
Thinking about getting a dog.
I hear these guys are the best when it comes to companionship, temperament, and obedience (plus I love they way they look), but they're expensive and their coat is a bitch to manage.
Should I go for one, or do you recommend a different breed?
>>2204390
Border collies are insanely smart and not a breed I would recommend for your first dog (you didn't say if it was or not).
You also didn't mention the fact that you need to find work for it to do, they aren't dogs you can just keep in the house all day. Walks aren't optional for any dog, but certainly not a border collie, so unless you can commit to making sure the dog gets plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, pick something else.
I'm a first time BC owner, got mine in November at 8 weeks old. She's little under 12 months now.
Great breed. Her intelligence continues to blow my mind. Has an understanding for things that I never got out of other breeds before.
They learn very fast and are wonderful dogs for companionship.
You DO have to make quite an effort though. Not nearly as much as some weenies around here imply, but they do need lots of play and attention, especially in the early months. More than most other breeds. The herding and nipping is frustrating but pretty easy to train them out of. For mine it just sort of stopped naturally, although she still tries to grab my shoes sometimes to play. For the first couple months though, my hands looked like fucking hamburger meat thanks to them sharp puppy teeth.
Long story short: If you have the time, feel like you can make the effort, you'll end up with a dog you'll be both proud to raise and love spending time with and playing with.
Border collies come from a working line, and are NOT appropriate for people that are couch potato fat-back motherfuckers. If you're active, then they are down with any damn thing you're up to, however, if you're a lazy fuck, they'll make your life a living hell.
A typical "shit" tier border collie will engage you with a game of fetch until YOU get sick of the game. They'll literally grab the ball / whatever, drop it in front of you, and give you the look that says "throw it bitch", and when you throw it, they'll run, grab the ball, and drop it right in front of you to do it again....and again....and again, until you tap the fuck out.
They're great dogs, unless you're a couch potato.
English bulldogs are one of the breeds invented for couch potatoes....
/an/ need your advice.
I have a dog in quite a feral cat filled neighbourhood. Everytime i take him to a walk, he like every other dog just can't stop trying to chase/attack them. Personally, i am a bit worried if one day i'm careless and i can't stop him doing that. Is there any way to train them to stop chasing cats?
>>2204387
Just buy a .22 and get hunting.
>>2204387
Put him on a leash, don't let him go out by his own. Train him to follow voice command if possible.
i lost my sweet doges. Plz send good vibes for me finding them ;-;

I have been nabbing as cryptocoryne wendtii but recently noticed it's more like lutea. I've had 4 packs of these and noticed the other one looks like it might be wendtii. What's the deal?
Hey /an/. I posted last thread about my tank cycle crash killing one of my goldfish. I think I've decided that I'll take the surviving one to my LFS for rehoming (he's a lovely little pearlscale).
On another note, I'll be looking at cleaning the tank fiercely once he's gone and rescaping it. How long will the bacteria in my filter survive with minimal ammonia?

Just throw some food in every now and then
What is this?

I am allergic to my puppy! My eyes itch and are watery 24/7.
What are my options? I love my puppy to death, I couldn't imagine giving him up.
Antihistamins?
>>2203772
Every day for the next 10-15 years of my dog's life? Is that even healthy?
>>2203776
A lot of people do that. If you can't give him up you don't have a lot of options.
>have Boxer dog
>only way he lets go of ball is if I hose his face
>he recently learned to hold onto the ball with his front paws as I drench his face with the water jet
I swear to god I'm going to have to kick this fucker unconscious to get him to let go.
>offer treat
>he drops ball
>click
>"Good drop it!!!!"
>give treat
>>2203651
I was writing an "inb4", but you beat me to it.
He is NOT fucking interested in treats.
Another technique is to hold the toy/ball while in his mouth, and wait for the dog to grow bored.
Newsflash: my dog does NOT get bored.
He just jerks and pulls until he feels some resistance against the toy, and he can keep this up for hours. My record is an hour, and he wasn't showing any signs of giving up.
>>2203652
>He isn't interested in treats
Then replace the treat with another ball? Reward doesn't have to be treats. All that matters is capturing the behavior.
