Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size
-parameters
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

I have been nabbing as cryptocoryne wendtii but recently noticed it's more like lutea. I've had 4 packs of these and noticed the other one looks like it might be wendtii. What's the deal?
>>
Hey /an/. I posted last thread about my tank cycle crash killing one of my goldfish. I think I've decided that I'll take the surviving one to my LFS for rehoming (he's a lovely little pearlscale).

On another note, I'll be looking at cleaning the tank fiercely once he's gone and rescaping it. How long will the bacteria in my filter survive with minimal ammonia?
>>
>>2203878
Just throw some food in every now and then
>>
>>2203869
I'm not from the US but there's many videos online of people unboxing shit from liveaquaria where they got sent the wrong plant or fish. Guess it could be them fucking up. One is most def a wendtii, while the other one is not.

HOLY FUCK ITS ANOTHER NANO BETTA PLANT AND SHRIMP THREAD

What wonders will we learn this thread? Maybe the easiest plants to grow? Whats the best cory? How to cycle a tank because its rocket science?
>>
>>2203915
Yet here you are with zero contributions. There hasn't been a mention of bettas, nano tanks, or shrimp yet. It's going to happen and you're going to deal with it. Most people have these simple and largely available fish. I myself have two 5 gallons, one 30 long, and one 180 gallon.

Here's a image of my goby. I let algae grow on the filter and he climbs up it and eats it off. 90% of his time is spent here and in the back of the filter. Then he comes back into the aquarium when he feels like it.
>>
>>2203932
Most people aren't going to bother paying $30 shipping for a fish, cuz ya know, that's retarded.

(okay I buy most my plants and fish online, but only from other hobbyists)
>>
I've been thinking about getting a goldfish or two, and saw some anons suggest to get at least 3 so they can socialize. Whats the smallest tank I can shoot for? I'll upgrade when I need to, but for now I'm looking for some comfy buddies to add to my room.

Also, should I get them all the same gender?

Gender won't matter for goldfish.

>>2203941
I didn't say it was easy, or overpriced. It's just needless for most hobbyists to justify dropping that much on shipping a fish. Most of what I personally enjoy about the hobby is the aquascape and growing plants underwater, I don't need rare fish to accomplish that.
>>
>>2203947
>>2203940
Oops sorry I was going to type more. 40 gallons at the absolute minimum for 3 fancies, and I would get a canister filter. I don't know how social they are though, mine didn't seem to interact much.

if you're getting fancies, you'll want 20gal for the first fish and 10 for each additional fish ideally. But I know from experience that 3 smaller fish in 20+ will be okay. Also you need masses of filtration for goldfish. I double filter my tank. I'll be honest, they're dirty fish, you can't keep anything else with them and a bare bottom tank is probably the best thing you can keep them in.

But their personalities are the most wonderful things. If you can deal with the amount of work required for goldfish, they are worth it. I highly recommend less delicate breeds. Ryukins, orandas and fantails are all wonderful.

I'm into reptiles and inverts so I have to order most of my shit from germany.

>but there are at least 4 stores with different fish in my city.

fish are for decorative purposes, I don't understand why you'd want some mediocre guppies.
>>
>>2203966
Re read my post and take the advice ;3
>>2203972
Reptiles and inverts and the same thing. Nothing more than "cool" decorations. This is why I don't feel anything when I kill fish or reptiles in the wild.
>>
>>2203972
Exactly. Most fish (not all, some apparently have personalities) are just for decoration, no matter how into the hobby you are. That's why I'm saying there's no need for most people to order fish online. Most stores have a way bigger selection of fish than reptiles and inverts anyhow, just because they require less space and are cheap for them to buy in bulk.

Besides, you ordering from Germany is about the same is someone in the US ordering from 1-2 states away.
>>
>>2203972
Hi gardeningqueer :3 saw your tumblr not to long ago.
>>
>>2203973
>Reptiles and inverts and the same thing. Nothing more than "cool" decorations.

hence why you should only get unique and cool looking ones, and not the mediocre selection they have in every store.

the same goes for plants.
>>
>>2203977
Quit being buttmad. I hope you make sure the fish/reptiles you kill aren't protected and that you have the proper permits.
>>
>>2203972
This is subjective. Some people see fish as decorations. They are the one who don't give a shit about care and are usually brain dead as they can't comprehend anything.
>>
>>2203980
We know you're a faggot. Also I don't know if they are. I don't have any permits. I do it when no one is around. If you throw a lizard with broken legs into the water around here a big fish will eat it.

The stock rotates in many fish stores. I almost dropped real money on shipping a pair of these gourami but then my store got them in for cheap. If you can't make a handsome tank out of what's available you kind of suck at fishkeeping.

I'm familiar with fish, although I don't keep them, while every store has their own 'selection' it's still the same shit every second or third store, and we've got a whole lot more fish available than you do in america.

>>
I gotta give it to bugguy, if he happens not be ila, you are at least able to filter him out instead of him going undercover to shitpost.

I also disagree strongly with his points about readily available fish or plants being worthless. I think it's the same as with cooking a meal. Using fancy spices doesn't make you a good cook. We all got so many different goals in this hobby, be it breeding, aquascaping, pondkeeping, reefkeeping, 'just keeping some fish' etc. that there is no universal scale on who's worthy or not, just very specific areas one can excel in.

I for example was stunned by this one guy who kept mudskippers in a brackish vivarium and showed his tank here. Despite me being more into aquascaping, shrimp breeding and amphibia, I found his contributions very inspiring and interesting, so I usually welcome anyone that shares the same general hobby with me. No matter if someone just keeps Neons in a community tank and is starting out or has something much more fancier and intricate.

To add to his point about stores having no variety, I of course can't speak for the netherlands, but even big petstore chains in germany like fressnapf offer up to 20-30 different tetra species, huge variety of cichlids, kilifish, barbs, catfish etc and basically anything one could imagine, from dwarf crayfish to Frontosas in terms of size. And that's not even talking about designated fish stores.

I'm working on building a community tank. I'm also thinking about (perhaps) pearl or opaline gouramis instead. The guppies I would probably slowly work on, making sure I got guppies with appropriate colours. I've also been looking at things like bleeding heart tetras and tiger barbs but I'm still unsure- at least with guppies I'll have a very obvious size difference, right?
>>
>>2204124
How large of a tank? 20g? I have pearls, they are beautiful, peaceful fish. Make sure you have a M:F ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. Guppies need 1:3.
>>
>>2204120
It's basically the same if not similar care in aquarium maintenance plus the basking lights and shit.

It's pretty much inbetween between lizard and fish care
>>
>>2204126
just over 20, closer to 25!
It's a 30" tank. I was definitely going to go for 1:1 on gouramis, whichever I get. And my guppy count was taking that into account! In fact, my limiting factor is that I want to move from two filters to one filter (goldfish), according to aqadvisor at least.

My major concern is that guppies might nip fins?
>>
>>2204131
I was just guessing from your stocking list :)

I haven't kept more than 1 dwarf, but for most gourami species it's very important you keep only one male. I've never had guppies that bothered any fish other than each other, and I've kept a billion guppies.
>>
>>2204135
awesome. I think I was thinking of another small fish and their tendency to bully anabatids. Maybe thinking of zebras or tetras? I don't know.
>>
>>2204138
The only other thing about the stocking is there's no fish that like the middle layer of the tank. Not everyone cares about that of course.
>>
>>2204139
I'm not the best on various layers. What in particular likes that layer?
>>
>>2204141
Most tetras and barbs. Actually though you can forget what I said because my guppies and gourami like to swim in the middle and top of the tank.
>>
>>2204142
thank you! I have definitely been considering barbs and tetras instead of guppies, but I think that set of fish will be the last to be added, so I can decide whether it needs filling out in the middle

I'm opening myself up for suggestions. I'd like to switch my hermit to a full fish diet compared to feeding it these shitty little dried sinker tablets. She always gets excited when I throw goldfish in the tank. Which brings me to the topic of thiaminase. Seems like they're full of it and strictly feeding her goldfish would be harmful to her health. So I'm in the market for something else to feed her that's alive. At the moment I'm considering small koi that usually go for $8-$15 or so at PetSmart. I could do that weekly no problem, they're probably about her size so it'd be a good amount of food for her. She goes through two goldfish within 10-15 minutes so I'm not worried about her not being able to finish it. But I'm worried the PetSmart employees will eventually catch on to what I'm doing and that'll be that.

From the research I've done I hear that thiaminase can be denatured through heat. So I could possibly boil goldfish before feeding them to her, but that doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun. Considered buying fish from the market but I'd really prefer live fish and not stuff that's been handled a lot. And my LFS doesn't sell anything that isn't some sort of exotic saltwater fish or itty bitty freshwater ones.

Hey, does this sound like roundworms?

My fish had been shitting out long strings of poo like crazy for a month, now my other fish has started doing it too. The shit is normal colored except recently there are has been gaps in it caused by clear strings.
Today I saw two small flatworm looking things swimming very fast, like pic.

I'm gonna pick up aquarium salt and general cure on the weekend

The free swimming worms are probably just planaria and are completely harmless.

How often do you feed them and how are the water parameters? Your fish might just be stressed and overfed.
>>
>>2204248
I wasn't trying to detail what they looked like, just their movement, which I said.
>>2204265
I don't overfeed them, rotate between 3 different types of frozen foods, skiping a day a week, tank is cleaned once a week. I've had them for a year and they only started acting differently recently, so
>>
>>2204284
That doesn't sound bad but you might want to try feeding them every other day. The planaria are there because there's extra food sitting around. The poop could be constipation, bacterial infections, or internal parasites.

They're pretty chill once you get a shoal or at least 4 of them but because of the size this isn't always possible. A nice wide tank with some coverage at the sides / corners and other large to largish tank mates (Dollars, the larger Gourami types, for example) are pretty good.

Hey guys, I just lost my lemon tetra school.
I had like 8 of them but 3 slowly died over time to an unknown disease and the last 5 just died tonight after a 60% water change, which I do every week. This is an established tank so it's not like an ammonia spike would have killed them.

Could this just be old age? The rest of the fish in the tank seem fine, not even the loaches seem to be bothered. I've had these fish almost 2 years now, they were about an inch when I got them. I don't know what else could be going on, anyone seen anything like this before?

Guys can we stop feeding bugguy's attention boner and just contribute to the thread. The nigger doesn't even keep fish and deemed it acceptable to keep a large crayfish in a fucking 5 gallon tank. He's just a elitist Dutch troglodyte.

>>
>>2204399
Depends on the species I guess, I keep cherry shrimp and they breed no matter what.

Moss is not a necessity, but hugely important cause it has a lot of surface area for biofilm and micro organisms and offers refuge for small shrimplets.

give it a week and watch them, they might just adjust and then go right back to normal.
>>
>>2204392
Odd- I read that they should live 6 years. Them dying after 2 years is pretty strange. Have you introduced anything new to the tank? Parameters good?

>>2204397
Just keep an eye on it, don't change anything. If I remember right you are dosing ferts and have good lights and substrate and everything. Just be patient, repens is pretty cheap. They're probably just adjusting.

Hey guys i need your help.
I bought this sump off someone and i'm not sure what to put in the red areas the person i bought it from had another sump and in that spot they had a bunch of brick looking rocks lined up with many little holes in them about 20 bricks in total maybe.

I am asking what stuff to put there since i'm new to this sump stuff
>>
>>2204519

I think likely some form of biological media, I dunno about his bricks, but you could use some coarse sponges cut to size or you could make some filter bags yourself filling a pair of tights with some volcanic rock, hydroleca, ceramic noodles etc. to the width of the sump. Anything inert with a high surface area should be good for this, your aim is mainly to provide a home where you can cultivate the beneficial bacteria that help remove the ammonia.

First timer here, any kind anon who can be bothered to critique my dumbshit attack plan for upgrading tanks? First off, my primary dilemmas:
- Has to be done within a single weekend
- New tank (75g) will be occupying more or the less the same spot as the old (35g)
- Livestock: 1 blue gourami, 3 rosy barbs, 6 clown loaches, several months old, about 2.5-3.5", aren't these guys really sensitive to massive changes?
- Stuff on-hand: a bottle of Prime, an old bottle of a 100ml bottle of Seachem Stability, test kit

>Move 75g into position as close to the spot that I can put it
>Friday morning:Prep 75, aquarium start cleaning glass, set-up filter, place some decor
>Fill up to carrying weight (about 15 gallons/65liter) with Prime-treated water, run filter (new media) and keep it on, dose with Stability
>Friday night - weekly 50% water change on 35g (set aside water), dose with Stability
>Saturday morning - start draining 35g, set tank water aside
>Remove plants (anubias only) and decor, put in holding container 1
>Put old gravel in stockings, put in holding container 2 with filter media, put airstone in
>Net fish into container 1 with plants and decor, pop in the backup corner filter from 35g
>Completely drain 35g, move it out
>Move in 75g into the spot
>Set up canister filter with old media
>Put in gravel (still in bags), decor, plants
>Pour all the old water in
>Top off tank with Prime treated water
>Dose tank with Stability
>Transfer loaches in
>Test water parameters every 4 hours

How'd you do it?
>>
>>2204552
aw shit, it should be
>SUNDAY morning - start draining 35g
>>
>>2204552
Since you're using your old filter that's good. You won't have to wait a month to cycle since your filter already has bacteria on it. Just keep an eye on the parameters after moving everything to the new tank, you'll probably need to do some extra water changes for a little bit.
>>

I wish I had the room for a couple large aquariums.
>>
>>2204485
How much per week are you supposed to change? I do 20%. Is that fine?
>>
>>2204556
If I could ever have an absolutely massive tank, I would skip the giant fish. As awesome as midas cichlids are, my dream is to create a huge iwagumi landscape tank and fill it with hundreds of tiny fish like green neon tetras, and just watch them swarm around. Maybe I'd get a few docile bigger fish though. Not sure.
>>
>>2204557
There's no definite answer. It all depends on your water volume, filtration, bioload in the tank, and the water parameters you desire.

I do 50% per week but there is people out there, that could do that daily or do 20% every two days etc.

So you need to get down to the parameters and health of your tank: Is everything fine, no undesired algae, fish seem healthy, plats seem healthy, no bad reading on the chemistry:

keep up your maintenance as is

If something is off, either de- or increase maintenance.
>>
>>2204367
A giant betta isn't as common or basic as your regular betta
>>
>>2204572
Not to mention that giant plakat bettas don't really look like what the average person pictures when they think of a betta. They're absolute monsters and they have a lot of personality.
>>
>>2204552
You're going crazy for nothing anon. Set up tank. Use filter media. Throw in the prime and throw away the stability. Put fish in after about an hour to make sure prime did its jobs and you're good. No more than 2 hours. Do small water changes here and there and you're good. I've never lost a fish switching tanks like this.
>>
>>2204552
Clown loaches should be fine but an understanding that they will outgrow the 75 is necessary as they get long and wide

Got a Fluval spec and half a bag of petco sand from a friend who was going to throw it out, I cleaned it, filled it up, then added API quickstart and Tap water conditioner and left the pump running since sunday.

Is the tank ready to add any living things in it yet?

I'd like to put a marimo, a couple java ferns. Same friend said he'll throw half a duzen cherry shrimps and a panda cory my way when my tank is done cycling.
>>
>>2204591
Anubias and Java fern are great plants if you are afraid of plant care. They're pretty much throw in and forget about and the betta will appreciate the Anubias. But to keep him alive 3-4 pellets a day. You can stretch it out over the day which will be much better. Weekly water changes and gravel vacs will keep him happy and disease free.

Java fern look great and are 0 maintenance. Putting live plants in your tank really makes it look much nicer.

Isn't it kind of ironic that places PetSmart strictly sell goldfish as feeders, even though they are chalk full of thiaminase? Especially since they refuse to sell other, safer fish to you if you tell them they are to be feeders.
>>
Go ahead and talk shit, but I do enjoy these mosquitofish that I have gathered.
I originally gathered three, two males and a female, and waited until she had a brood, then released the two males to keep her from getting too stressed. Now I am just waiting for the brood to mature, and she will be released as well, her contribution to my tank rewarded with a return back to her original pond. Pretty humane I figure, seeing as plenty of fish in shops are wild-caught anyways. I also assume that these babies, having been raised in a tank will be better adapted and less stressed in a tank environment. Although at this point the female actively begs me for food anytime I go by the tank, despite having just been fed to fullness. She certainly seems content living in a tank, and I'm pretty sure if I released her I could find her again by dipping a pipette into the pond.

The goal here is to have the lowest-tech tank possible. I use no filter, just an airstone, and I have bryozoan colonies filtering the water for me. I also do not remove debris to allow for nutrition of my unfertilized plants. (which have all been thriving) My jungle val is almost four feet long at this point and I really wish I had sharp scissors to snip it. I was using Triops to keep the substrate turned and extremely clean (they spend their whole day digging about an inch down for detritus) but they all reached the end of their 50 day lifespan a few days ago. I am hoping to collect eggs and start the second generation soon, but have yet to develop a good strategy for gathering the eggs. It has been about three or four months now, and the tank has never gone over 15ppm nitrate, with zero ammonia and nitrite consistently, and only 15-25% water changes biweekly. I am convinced duckweed is the key for preventing water chemistry spikes. I am pretty happy with the setup. I also used special kitty clay cat litter as my substrate.
>>
>>2204702

>>
>>2204702
Mosquitofish are solid! I wish there were small native fish near me. I'm jealous of all the biodiversity in your tank- where'd you find the bryozoans?

Duckweed and all other floating plants are excellent for keeping the aquarium stable, but they do suck up a lot of nutrients. Your val growth is really impressive though, how long were they when you got them?
>>
>>2204700
It's because they breed like crazy and people buy them for small tanks and die easily so they buy another. No one wants rosy red minnows or any other feeder for some reason. I have 5 rosy reds and they are very active and give the tank lots of life.
>>
>>2204600
3-4 pellets a day seems like too much in my honest opinion, because bettas get blocked up so easily. I would do 2, unless it's a huge king betta, then 3 I guess. Just my opinion though. Agree on the plants though, great idea for a betta as they like a lot of things in their kingdom to rule over!
>>
>>2204743

>>
>>2204746
Not the person you were responding to, but I have a thick layer of duckweed, water lettuce, and some other crap. My plants get plenty of light. Flourish will kill val. I do agree about removing the bubbler though, your plants will do better without it.

Keep in mind that water changes do more than just remove ammonia and its byproducts. I change my water at least once a month.
>>
>>2204604
Still lit!
>>2204686
You could get away bioload-wise with 1 panda in a 2.5g, though I personally would not keep him solitary, but you are not killing him or anything. Maybe look into a 10-20gal in the future when you have the space/money and give him some other cories to school with.

As for Betta and Shrimp, yes it can work if you have lots of moss for shrimp babies to hide and your Betta is more laid back. If you wanna try this, get some discount low grade cherries or ghosts and see how he responds to those. Obviously starting with anything else shrimpwise could end up hurting your wallet a lot.

Anything that doesnt nip, so no barbs or serpae tetras as schooling fish. Rummynose Tetras are great, like you could get 15 - 20 of those and go from there. Maybe some loaches, cories and plecos for the bottom.

People often recommend regulae neon tetras for angels but if the angels are not familiar with neon tetras, they may resort to eating the smaller ones when they are full grown, so you are generally looking more at medium-large sized schoolers.
>>
>>2204742
>people buy them for small tanks
But they label them as feeders specifically. My PetSmart even has a stupid giant cartoon cat sticker with some quirky text about how they're yummy or some shit. They've become standard. They're cheap and nobody doesn't want a "bland" rosy red. And why get a feeder goldfish for my 5 gallon when I can get a pretty Black Moor!

I'd say to use black skirts or a large, easy to keep shrimp. BTW, I got a sexy and a peppermint shrimp today SO EXCITED!
>>
>>2204803
Here's the dealio. If you can find South American puffer you can get a few. These are the only puffers that can be kept in a community tank and with more than one. They don't claim territory as in the wild they scatter there eggs. When they hatch the current takes them away and they spend a short time as plankton just floating out. They just swim around migrating and spend most of there time in lakes. Because of this they do fine in community tanks. I have kept them over the years and they are active and interact with you. Rarely see them if lfs so I have them order me some.

They're actually really hard to mistake once you see one IRL. The heads are totally different. Plus the bullseye snakeheads in South Florida have a really distinct color and pattern.

They sell for a good amount of money. People love wild caught fish. Some lady emailed me calling me a dumb nigger (I'm white) for selling sunfish I breed in my aquarium. Said she called the DNR. Told me they are part of the circle of life and could have been a meal for some starving fish. Still waiting for them to knock on my door and take my legally acquired fish.

There isn't a ton of freshwater variety if you are going with lures. Snakeheads are limited to a certain area, peacocks are limited to another area, so it's pretty much largemouth and the occaisional gar at a lot of my spots. The Mayans and Bluegills will always nip at stuff. There are a lot of other cichlids but you would have to go with light tackle to get most of them.

So I'm taking another crack at just a bowl, this time with plants and an air stone so it doesn't develop that gross white film hopefully. I'm open to suggestions for something other than an air stone. The pump I have in it is 5-15gal and this bowl is 1gal, so the flow is strong.

1. How do I control the flow or is there something that won't mind such a strong current?
2. Can 2 ghost shrimp live in here? Can snails live in here? What can live in here and not escape?
>>
>>2204979
Yes you can buy a regulator. They're like 99 cents or cheaper. I think most pet stores carry them or order online.
>>
>>2204979
Anything CAN escape without a cover. Leave it 3/4 of the way full to help prevent that.

Your plant isn't going to do well with the airstone and kind of defeats the purpose of that kind of tank. It probably won't die though.
>>
>>2204979
Would you be mad if I broke it?
>>
>>2204985
Thanks, I'll order online prob.
>>2204992
I'm not really attached to the air stone, but I don't want the white film, I basically want to touch this tank as little as possible like I do with my other tanks. 3/4ths of the way full with some tall plants like ribbons or pothos going out of the water could work, right?
>>2204994
Just buy me another one or something nicer and we're good.
>>
>>2205019
The white film is just bio film. The air stone causes the small amount of CO2 to escape your aquarium. What I do is I just dip a pitcher or cup into the tank every two weeks or so- the biofilm gets sucked in and I just dump it out.

I haven't kept the plants you mentioned but most are fine sticking out of the water.

>Parameters good?
The parameters are fine actually, no ammonia, no nitrite nitrate at about 10ppm, 20 or so ppm before the water change.

I think it may have been columnaris, the water change may have just been the straw that broke that camel's back stress wise. All of my other fish are still perfectly fine as always.

As to where they may have gotten the illness I don't know since I haven't gotten any new stock in like 4-5 months. Last thing I got was a few more yoyo loaches to add to the pack already in there and they are fine. So that's the only hole I can't fill in my theory, but the signs of the fish that died before seem to point to columnaris as the culprit.

Pic related is them like half a year ago.
>>
>>2205042
That one anubis rhizome looks buried. Dig it up. It'll rot away slowly. Shrimp don't require heavily planted tanks. Throw in some Java fern and some Java moss and they'll be fine with that. Also a moss ball as they'll eat whatever gets stuck in it and a bunch of other things. They just don't like strong filtration. Plenty of small fish. Tell me what kind of fish you're into and I can give you suggestions.

White cloud mountain minnows. Also comes in a solid gold variety.

Thats sounds good. It says I should keep 8 in a 15 gallon. Can I get away with 5 in a 10 gallon? Also I was thinking of possibly putting maybe 3 or 4 ghost shrimp, would they do fine? What kind of substrate should I use. Also it says they live more comfortable in cold water, thing is I live in the desert so even my room temp is slightly higher than what is considered"normal" at 77-80°F.
>>
>>2205102
Ghost shrimp do fine in tropical temps. I personally use sand but gravel is okay. White clouds though come from cold streams. If you have a petco near I heard they're so 5 for $5 on certain schooling fish. I got 5 cherry barbs and they are neat.

Recently I moved my female puffer fish downstairs since the male passed away (old age) and she was pretty lonely upstairs, and she took a great liking to watching the TV. Now whenever I'm in the room she swims up to the side of the tank where she watches TV from and begs (like they do for food) for it to be turned on. She even ignores food in favour of watching the TV. What the fuck.

The thing about white cloud mountain minnows is that they are practically extinct in the wild. All the ones we see in stores and being sold online have been kept and bred in captivity for generations. Its why they also come in the solid gold variety. They have been bred to be that color.

As long as you take your time slowly adjusting them to your tank then they should adapt perfectly fine.

Just look at goldfish, my ex's parents keep them in a pond outside, all year round, and goldfish are domesticated carp, definitely cold water fish. But they do just fine in the middle of Nevada, with no shade!

And if all else fails, you can get a water bottle and place it in your freezer, then once it's frozen solid let it float in your tank during the day.
>>
>>2205168
It usually takes a few weeks, sometimes even a few months.

It was a little less than a foot long, and they had trimmed it at the store so a bunch of the leaves were melting when I got it. The remaining ones proceeded to bolt. So I've now lost my two large shrimp from my planted aquarium. My Bamboo shrimp and my vampire shrimp.

I have a feeling that the ferts I am using may be to blame as they contain copper.

However the manufacturer assures me they are "shrimp safe" and many customers have tanks with RCS and Amanos with no issues.

People rarely have bamboo and vampire shrimps in planted tanks so do you think they have a lower tolerance to copper or something?

Pretty much anything other than another gourami or a betta. Their aggression is way overblown, I work with these things every day and I haven't once seen one show any indication of aggression to other dwarves or any other fish. I have one in my 10 gallon with a school of guppies and some ghost shrimp and he's always been a super chill dude.

The only reason to avoid other gouramis is that they might mature and try to stake out territories. You can only have 2 males in 20 gallons or more, iirc. Could be wrong there.

And with bettas, I've heard stories of the two beating the shit out of each other. Pretty sure that's more for the gourami's safety than the bettas because I'd be willing to bet that bettas instigate most conflicts like that.

Regardless, I'd just stick to smaller schooling fish and shrimp

Cherry shrimp:

Lupdiesel has a great video on that. Beginner friendly and covers all parts.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cFMDt2EOm7A

Crystals: Unless you have quite a bit of experience in the shrimp hobby, stay away from very sensitive shrimp like crystal reds/taibees/pinto or cardinal shrimp. Basically anything that requires R/O water and is very picky.

Imho, you could try your luck with tiger shrimp, they are easier to handle, compared to bees. Babaultis are also cool, can switch colours and are as hardy if not more so than cherries.

If you wanna know about crystal shrimp care, try mark's shrimp tanks on youtube. He is a chill norwegian guy that specializes in most sensitive soft water shrimp species.

If you can find Honeys, they're smaller and better for community tanks. I personally wouldn't put a dwarf gourami in a 10... they're a bit territorial and like to patrol their territory so other fish stress them out in a small tank.

Stock the tank slowly, just a few fish at a time. You can also reduce ammonia, which reduces nitrates, with activated charcoal, plants, and some water conditioners like Prime.

Small corydoras, small tetras, a few endlers or guppy, or otos would do okay. Stock it light especially if you get the DG.

>>2205562
It'd stress the fish out but something like a blue LED would be okay. Obviously it'd be bad if you have plants.

I don't know. But in America it's $15 for a 5 gallon. I heard it's more expensive in some parts of Europe like the UK for aquaria hobbyist.

>>2205950
The rule is $1USD per 1US gallon. Of course price is greatly inflated if it has plenty of accessories. However new tanks don't follow this rule.

I'm touched! But I actually don't know jack compared to most of the people on /aq/. I'm trying to learn though. A local fish guy gave me some books. I think my endlers are doing pretty well, they seem happy!

Craigslist. Online and store prices are super high. Literally just buy used, cheaper.

Petco. Though I have used sites to find free tanks and dumpster dive.

What is the four-digit number in which the first digit is one-third the second, the third is the sum of the first and second, and the last is three times the second? Explain your answer in full sentences.

A few threads ago someone said my ceramic boat might be harmful. I didn't remember where my grandma got it so I googled "vintage green aquarium boat decoration" and I found the little hut in pic related, do they look similar? Maybe they were part of a set or something? The hut is definitely an aquarium decoration. I just want to make sure the glaze isn't toxic. Lower left corner is my boat.

I just wanna love you
>>
>>2205984
That was me- same person who is the endler fan :). It looks very similar. After you said it was probably bought from a pet store, I wasn't worried at all about it. It does look very similar... and honestly, in a tank so small you'll know pretty quickly.
