Well, according to the movie Orca, one of them was smart enough to blow up an entire town in order to make a whale hunter go mad and sail into the North Pole for a final 1-v-1 death match:

What is this bug

It's a saddleback caterpillar (Acharia stimulea) with the eggs of a parasitic wasp laid on its bodies.

When the eggs hatch the wasp larvae will burrow thru the skin and that poor mofo is literally going to be eaten alive from the inside out.

Does anyone else ever feel tempted to either remove the parasites or kill the host to spare it or just to prevent more parasites?

Do you feed your squirrels, /an/?
12 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
No if I could I would though
>>
>>2209782
Used to have a squirrel feeder at my old place, the kind for dried corn cobs, the idea was to give them something to keep out of the birdfeeder. All it did was leave a huge mess behind and brought even MORE of the furry fucks out to empty out the birdfeeders.

Tl;dr: the squirrel population does fine without our help. Plant a live oak if you want to feed them.
>>
No, but the squirrel in my house eats all the spilled food corn cobs and nuts and all that my parrot spills. It even comes into my house, but runs away as soon as I come anywhere near to offer anything for it.

My parrot on the other hand is terrified of the squirrel and runs into my room if he comes.

Essentially I've a live in squirrel that scares my parrot from time to time.

Hello /an/
I'm a veterinary technician so feel free to ask me animal-related questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

What do you think about giving pets mineral oil? It seems pretty commonly done even at the vets, but I've heard it's really bad to ingest.
>>
>>2209374
Is a wet food diet for a cat really better than a quality grainless dry food? I tried to gradually switch my cat, but she had horrible diarrhea.....
>>
>>2209398
People who work at the vets are shills for pet food companies, I don't think they're the best source to ask... some are probably alright, though.

First guess? Brown recluse. I would take a match to the house just to play it safe.
>>
Is there xylitol in the muffins? If yes, find an emergency vet ASAP and call them and tell them you have a potential case of xylitol poisoning. If no, monitor and keep an eye on her. If she keeps eating and continues to pass over the next few days, then nothing to worry about.

I've been visiting /an/ for a month and haven't seen a bird geared topic all this time. We used to have them but no one has made one lately. So I'm changing that.

Pic related is not my pigeon sadly but the pictures are cute nevertheless.

That's why Animal Planet is giving his stuff? I caught some this morning but thought that was just normal for the channel. Apparently it's a marathon.

I had surprisingly bad taste as a child and didn't like Steve. I never understood the appeal of his show. I wanted animals, not someone talking about animals. As an adult though he is very entertaining.

Are any of the "facts" and myths surrounding elephants true?

Are they actually incredibly smart?

Do they feel emotion and mourn their dead/return to the spot where they died?

How hostile are they? I've heard that elephants actually traveled to some wildlife reserve after getting injured by a poacher. A bit of stretch, but you get the idea.

Are any of the elephant myths rooted in reality? Is there any proof?

Yes.
They also have sweet tits.
>>
You know.

Elephants or chimps are so smart that all you had to do, is go to youtube and think of an action.

Like elephant playing piano, or chimp riding a bike, etc.

So you can judge by yourself, how good its elephant piano playing, (not much).
>>
>>2207499
Yes, they are incredibly smart and mourn their dead. They even seem to sort of mourn long dead elephant skeletons that are around.

Elephants aren't horribly hostile, but can be ornery and kill the shit out of you anyway.

Do slugs feel fear (mortal terror) when people suddenly appear (out of their houses) and they walk on the path to step on them and crush them to death to the point where entrails come out of their behind? I stepped on a slug (accidentally) the other day coming out of my house, and I still feel like disgusting garbage. Seriously, I can't get it out of my head.

I don't know, honestly....but you didn't want to kill it, so don't feel too bad.
>>
>>2206721
Some form of fear. I know they don't like it when to take an xacto knife and slice them in half from tail to head.
>>
I don't think they are capable of very complex inner life.

This was interesting, simplified I'm sure but can't help thinking about logic gates
>A study, published in 2016 in Nature, has shown that in air-breathing freshwater snails of the genus Lymnaea Lamarck, 1799 goal-directed decision-making during the hunt for food is performed by just two neuron types. Through measuring the action potentials between neurons, the researchers found that just two neurons were able to come to a complicated form of decision making. One neuron in the brain tells the snail if food is nearby, the second neuron signals whether the snail is hungry or not. Such decision making helps the snail save energy by reducing complex brain activity when there is no food nearby and adapts its behavior in the absence of food. Thus the snail can switch between a low-use mode and a high-use mode depending on the decision. According to lead researcher György Kemenes, this could help engineers design more efficient "robot brains" in future.

You're probably wasting mental energy by feeling like that, but you have good character.

Was he justified in kicking the dog

assault the people not the fucked dog
>>
I can only assume that the dogs got into a tussle and the owner didn't punish the dog in front of the black guy. The black guy clearly could have walked away from the situation, but his hood mentality is still with him. Goes and kicks the dog.

Don't worry, the dude will go to jail for something else soon. I'm sure of it.
>>
>>2206604
Not at all. He needlessly escalated that. The entire crowd was doing their best to defuse the situation and calm things down, but he decided to be a dumb nigger and kick it.

If he had just walked away from the situation instead of letting his anger get the best of him, nothing would have happened.

My cat died yesterday. I don't know why. He was 6, healthy. He had regular vet care, no health issues that we knew of, he just died in his sleep at 6 years old. He went peacefully, but I'm still fucked up about it. It came out of seemingly no where.
