How viable is it to just up and go on a road trip with no plan or preparation or equipment? I want to drive from Houston to Yellowstone or maybe even Glacier Nation Park in Montana.

However the amount of planning and preparation a lot of people do for outdoors excursions is daunting and keeps giving me an excuse not to do it. Can't I just up and do it? Figure it out when I get there? Maybe I'll just buy what I need from some Cabela's after talking to some real experienced /out/ists on the trail and learn from my mistakes as I go. Has anyone experienced something like this?

>road trip
So, you'll never be more than half an hour away from anything you could have forgotten? I think you'll be okay.
>>
as for the road trip no planning is needed. literally no planning at all. i do this every year in the western us and i'm not even from your country. just grab a car and head any direction you desire. you'll find everything along the way
>>
Give your car a once over and just go.
Sure you'll miss things along the way. But you can see them next time.

Don't overpack. If you need something you can buy it while on the road.

How far is it realistic to travel with camping equipment on foot?

How many miles could I realistically walk with a tent, sleeping back and other bits? My stamina's quite good and I can clock 30+ miles in a day but that's without any equipment.

Several hundred people each do thousands of miles every year. Check out whiteblaze and then come back to ask something a bit more specific.

Hi, I'm wierdly into people performing medical care to themselves either in reality or depicted in film; e.g. the scene in no country for old men, where Anton Chigurh treats his wounds after recieveing a multitude of shotgun pellets to the leg.

So my hopes are you'll all provide similar content and stories and good medical equipment to use whilst /out/ THANKS!!!

i have plenty i do this all the time
took out my own stitches applied superglue to pesky wounds burned off various skin protrusions ripped of toenails that got rekt or superglued them if they were still salvageable took out one of my teeth when it hurt and cured ingrown toenails with 96% alcohol.

if you want to handle your own shit while /out/ there is an often overlooked item bring a small mirror!! it can have multiple uses but when you have to treat a wound on your face head inside your mouth or on your ass it comes mighty handy.

Why isn't this more popular in "ze west"?
I remember ruskies selling them on local markets in the 90's, they ware solid quality, today they are made by chinks, so the built quality is much lower, but you can still get decent reliability if you buy a mil-tec or overpriced zippo version.
I love mine, not just for hands, if you put it around your sternum under the cloths, it will help warming entire body (blood circulation).

What do you use it for? I see it being useful for slow military patrols where you are not doing much physical activity, yet if you go camping:
hiking - already warm
doing camp chores - already warm
sleeping - already warm
idling by the fire - add more wood to fire
I just don't see the need for this tool.

Ok so I live in California and currently have the Adidas Climacool Team Strength backpack (pic), and its been raining a lot more than usual lately (which we need), and I walk in the rain with my backpack like every other day. Recently little water enters through the top, some more is coming through the bottom, usually when I put it down,

But I wanna know if theres a better, more watreproof backpack with about as much space and as many pockets as my current (nothing wrong if its a little bigger). I'm tryna keep it under $100, so any suggestions.

Btw my main use is school and sports and everyday use

Not trying to be a smart ass but why don't you just get a small umbrella?
>>
This is my everyday bag.

http://www.chromeindustries.com/product/barrage-cargo-backpack/BG-163.html

Waterproof, good size and comfortable. I had a messenger bag from the same company (they specialize in bike messenger lifestyle) but i don't ride enough so walking around with it hurt my shoulder and I needed more storage for day or weekend trips. The only con is that organization is lacking due to the design of the one large compartment, but you can remedy it with a bag organizer which are like 10 bucks. They run sales constantly so if you can wait a few months you can usually get it for 50$ or more off which is what I did.

Really over the "look at girls fishing" title images of women pretending to like fishing. I prefer the last threads stupid emoticon one to this.

90% of these hoes got paid to hold the fish or their husband forced them out there. Would much rather just look at a picture of lures, fish, or water than these bimbos.

Just FYI guys you can Google "boobies" and see all the naked women you want. You will never get a fisherwoman gf. Get over it. They don't like fishing and they will never understand it.

>muh girl like fishing

No she doesn't. She just likes you so she puts up with it the way you put up with her cunt mother and going shopping at bed bath and beyond.

So... Winter is here and I've been laying hedges again. I got to wondering if anyone else here partakes?

It seems to be a fairly british thing as far as I can see, does it happen in any of your fancy foreigner type countries?

I'm not expecting much response to this thread... It's a dying art so far as I can tell.

Pic is not one of my hedges, I have no idea what style I lay in as it doesn't seem to match up with any of the established styles i've seen, but meh, it works.

>Aussie here, haven't heard of it before. Explain hedging anon?

The basics are pretty simple really - laying a hedge (typically hawthorn or blackthorn etc) involves making an angled cut at the base of each little tree, splitting downward from that cut while laying it over, weaving it together and securing it with stakes... New growth comes up from the cuts and remaining stump and rejuvenate the hedge, and the angled parts also live on to create a thicker denser hedge without gaps for stock to sneak through. Birds and other hedge dwelling life love the lower thicker hedge too.

Pic is of the base of the pleacher (name for the hedge plant after it's been trimmed and laid over). Not the best pic but you can get the idea.

I guess in Australia it's probably too hot and dry for the types of plant usually used here? Also i suppose being a younger country with much larger areas to deal with, wire fences have been much more practical.

Hedge laying goes way back to the times before wire fences, and was the traditional way of keeping a purely living hedge stock proof before the availability of metal wire and the like.

This is the gayest fucking thing I've ever seen and you're a huge faggot for even considering these
>>
>>934519
can you give specifics as to why its bad? they ship you items they buy in bulk so the individual gets them for under market price
>>
>>934520
Because just like every single one of these boxes that isn't some kind of grab back off food and snacks (sometimes even then) 90% of every box will be useless bullshit and it might have one item of any quality at all that you then might actually use. You'll spend $60/m or whatever it is to get one $5 thing you actually want.

Hello, I am new to really, the outdoor experience, sadly I was not a explorer as a child, which honestly sucks. Anyhow, I am really interested in bush crafting. As in, I want to be able to go out in the woods for like a moth straight. Make a small little shelter such as the image I uploaded.

I wish to know of any gear I should purchase so that I have all of the necessities. Thank you guys and girls!
