Victor of Aveyron, 1800.jpg
115KB, 350x412px
How much cold can the human body handle?

Pic related, Victor was a feral child found when he was 12

>Shortly after Victor was found, a local abbot and biology professor,Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre, examined him. He removed the boy's clothing and led him outside into the snow, where, far from being upset, Victor began to frolic about in the nude, showing Bonnaterre that he was clearly accustomed to exposure and cold

My feet would freeze if I was running barefoot in the snow. Am I just weak from spending too much time inside?

I havent worn long pants in about 2 years outside of formal occasions and for only a couple hours at a time.

I am generally in pic related and a wife beater and dont tend to feel cold in my legs anymore, I will put on a swanndri but legs are always bare.

Those look like they pack up small too. It would be nice to not need a giant sleeping bag for winter camping

I would be very interested as well. I moved to Sweden a couple of months ago and it feels like I am getting used to the cold. Really interested in how far this could go. Especially getting my hands to stop from getting cold would be awesome.

Maybe Wim hof would be of interest to you as well.

Will I be warm enough in my hammock with a base layer, 30 degree sleeping bag, and a blanket under me?

You need a sleeping pad. I'd also bring a comforter if you don't have a lower degree bag.

>You need a sleeping pad.
Why? Your not sleeping on the suck the warmth out of you ground. It's no different then sleeping on a cot. You never hear people say "sleeping on a cot? You're gonna need a pad"
>>
>>930628
Convection losses and entirely different materials. A sleeping bag loses a lot of its insulating properties when compressed (i.e. bodyweight). The whole purpose of a sleeping pad, underquilt, etc is to provide effective insulation (with an air gap, in most cases, as air's a respectable thermal insulator) so you don't freeze your back off.

I can guarantee you're going to have something under you if you're on a cot, whether it be a sleeping pad, foam mattress or something.

>>930619
Consider buying an underquilt, or if you feel really keen, get a large enough sleeping bag and sling it under (but closely) with paracord or something. Be creative.

You could try mylar and a sleeping pad (or use a windshield reflector for a car trimmed to fit, or even bubble wrap of all things), but it's probably bordering too cold for it. More awkward if your hammock's single layer, too.

Yesterday I was preparing to leave my house. I had on my Eddie Bauer fleece lined canvas pants and a North Face thermal. I slipped on my Merrell shoes, put on my Marmot down puffer jacket, and put on my Patagonia hat.

I have become part of the problem.

It happened innocently enough. The shoes I actually like and bought, the pants I got on clearance. The shirt and jacket was a gift, as was the hat. Each piece is actually pretty nice, but it's more /fa/ than /out/.

Have I completely lost it? I consider myself an actual /out/door enthusiast. I hunt, backpack, fish, camp, hike, ect ect... but have I lost my way?

Help me /out/, you're my only hope.

Pic is not me.

Whats the problem? If you wear clothes designed for inna use, and you know, go inna, and use them, whats the problem?

Patagonia have decent environmental credentials, also, a lot of recycled material etc etc
>>

>>
>>930308
I don't see the problem. /out/ clothes are typically very comfy and most people don't consider them as being /fa/. You're just being self conscious.

Discuss Bivys here or talk about why you think tents/hammocks are superior.
14 posts and 1 images submitted.

The only downside I've seen with hammocks is that you need trees. Seem to be superior in every other way.

Easy to insulate
Pack up small
Always comfy
>>
>>930026
I've considered it but i sleep on my belly/sides so I don't think i could be comfortable throughout the night, otherwise I'd agree.
>>
I'm a hammock user, so I'm a little biased.

I think a tent is more versatile than a bicycle. There's more room, and less issue with condensation.

The main idea behind a bivy is that there is almost no set up, and it's smaller than a tent. If you're hiking really long hard days, and just need somewhere dry to sleep, then a bivy makes sense. It would be nice after a long day hiking to just unroll a sack and sleep in it.

If you are doing anything else though, a tent makes more sense.

As far as a hammock, I am also a side sleeper at home, but mostly sleep on my back in a hammock. I also sleep on my side too, it's not that hard in a hammock. You can also look into bridge hammocks that allow you to sleep on your stomach if you want.

Realistically though, a tent, bivy, or hammock set up all will be of similar size and weight for most temperature ranges. You may save a little with a bivy, but your pad and sleeping bag won't be any different.

I have black, red and golden raspberry shrubs all ripe in summer since last year in a addition to some red ones that are ripe in autumn, nearly six months of homegrown raspberries. In addition to that I have strawberries, potatoes and tomatoes every year. This ears special will be Capuchin peas, German turnips and maybe pumpkins

I need a versatile and inconspicuous jacket that allows for some freedom of movement, CCW and carrying a few essentials. It should be able to withstand use and keep me warm (with layering) and dry.

Would pic related (Carhartt Active Jacket) do the job?

i like charhart, quality products. i don't know if i would call it inconspicuous. in makes a statement.

that jacket also does not appear to have outside chest pockets which doesnt seem like a big deal until you want them. also do those front pockets zip?

what temp is winter around you?
>>
>>929604
Nah m8. Get urself a leather jacket instead. Like pic related. Cost more but u will aprecite the fashion sense that comes with it. All the moutain bitches will be on your nuts.
>>
>>929623
Yeah, the jacket has only two pockets inside as well. Those on the front don't zip, either.
I guess that could be a problem but I don't want a tacticool jacket with a dozen zippers all over the place.
Aren't those pockets enough to carry most basic stuff while having the rest in a backpack?
>what temp is winter around you?
Maybe 20F when it really gets cold. I've got a bunch of fleece liners and good base layers, though. I couldn't use a heavy jacket during spring or fall.

Anyone farm their own trees? Whether for firewood, lumber, or sale as whole?

I want to plant X amount of rows. And every year cut down a row for a years worth of firewood. And after an X amount of years start at the first row again where new trees have regrown.

Need to figure out how much space is needed, etc. Gonna need some statistics and formulas.
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Not a formula, OP, but make sure you're replacing the depleted nutrients in the soil the trees take, otherwise a new row where the old one was will do no good. You could find more info on that by researching cover crops, etc since it's the same concept.
>>
Go find a book on silviculture for your area. Your local natural resources office would be a good place to start asking questions.
My family owns 300 acres of which 20 are Xmas trees. Rest is woods that gets logged on a regular basis. Not big ole clear cuts but more of a selection type harvest. Dead dying and diseased trees are first to go. Then trees that regenerate from stump aka coppice growth. 300 years of firewood logging and in most places you would have to look hard to find evidence of it.
>>
>>929537
I knew two guys who had small tree farms. I know pine grows fastest and is used for paper production. But other than that, have fun waiting. You've got years to learn about tree farming

This Jerry-rigged dust collector is better than expected. It uses water to help cut down on fine dust. I just need to modify it a bit and add an exhaust filter. The vacuum also runs off the pedal power. Soon I'll be able to make tons of wooden lures with ease and less mess.
