Why isn't this more popular in "ze west"?
I remember ruskies selling them on local markets in the 90's, they ware solid quality, today they are made by chinks, so the built quality is much lower, but you can still get decent reliability if you buy a mil-tec or overpriced zippo version.
I love mine, not just for hands, if you put it around your sternum under the cloths, it will help warming entire body (blood circulation).

could you link one of this which you consider decent quality?
I haven't seen such thing, and looks interesting

What do you use it for? I see it being useful for slow military patrols where you are not doing much physical activity, yet if you go camping:
hiking - already warm
doing camp chores - already warm
sleeping - already warm
idling by the fire - add more wood to fire
I just don't see the need for this tool.
Most Americans have warm hands by nature.
Zippo makes one

>what for
For warming hands when working outside without gloves.
>military patroll
Yes. For warming hands when not moving in the cold - like during military training when have to sit in one spot.
At night when sleeping (put it on sternum among other places)
When I was young I also used it when I was painting scenery in the winter/atumn.

Zippo ones are decent I heard but overpriced imho. The one that serves me best is from mil-tech. It's also good to have a spare filament.

The peacock brand pocket hand warmers seem to be good quality. I got one for my wife for Christmas. My boss has the zippo also seems to be decent quality.
I really like them. As has been mentioned I keep mine on a lanyard and wear it under my clothes on really cold days.

I have the Zippo one. Works pretty good, but I prefer the charcoal stick hand warmer.

I get about 6 hours from each stick.

Bought the wife the "baby peacock" I think it was. Depending on how much oxygen you let it get it will last 9-12 hours on a full fill.

Bought the zippo one recently for $12 on a whim. Works pretty well.

The peacock is a petrol (lighter fluid) warmer. I've never used the charcoal kind.
