how would one go about acquiring a gorka 3. also has anyone here bought one, thoughts? whats a reliable and legit source to buy these things?
If you're European then its easier to my understanding as its made nearby. Most sources will be mil surp i believe. Not sure about America, but if you ebay you may find the occasional bit floating around check europe ebay too if you got cash for shipping.
>>929890
eBay. Expect to pay around $90 after shipping. Might have to pay duties when it arrives. Bars is the most common maker, spons is supposed to be better, but it's harder to find and much pricier.
You can get a fleece lined gorka 3 for another $10 which is kinda nice for cold regions, or if you wear it over a tank top... But it also kinda defeats the purpose of it, since the canvas fabrics are chosen to allow airflow and dry quickly. Adding a fleece lining to that probably makes it less quick to dry.
Yea i live in Europe, i kinda want something versatile so i might go with the fleece lined one, although you could just wear warmer shit underneath i guess. How exactly is the sposn suposed to be better, in what way i mean if anyone happens to know?

Can we have a car camping thread?
I've been sleeping out of a small 4 door. Windows tinted. 20% on the front and 5% on the rear. I crack the sunroof at night to stop condensation build up. Use libraries for wifi. Make rice and lentils with a small water boiler and a thermos.
Hi gonna chuck a few questions below, feel free to ignore or answer! so many be personal!!
1: what car are you in; and how do you set up for sleeping?
2: what items to you are most valuable, either for living and survival or comfort etc.
3: how do you maintain relationships, and what do you get out of this situation socially?
4: how do you maintain hygeiene?
5: how do you earn money? if you do earn money, what type of job and how much does it give? is this situation financially better off than housing?
6: how did you get to this point? Hope you're okay, good luck if i dont hear back!
>>929559
1. I've got an older Honda Accord. The backseat is too small so I just lay the front seat back as far as possible and sleep on my side. Usually from 11-6
2. Laptop cellphone and battery pack are nice to have. I'd say my essentials are a dark sleeping bag, and a water boiler+ thermos for cooking rice lentils or veggies
3. The friends who know me well know about it. Other people I just say I'm living in whatever part of town in parked in.
4. A 24/7 gym membership is essential. Partially for showers. Also for building your lower back muscles which will inevitably get sore at some point
5. I've got a part time internship at a news station doing teasers. It pays ok. Enough to get an apartment but not enough for a house. I just see rent as flushing money down the toilet. And I can't see myself staying in one house for to long
6. I've actually done this before not by choice. I had moved to a new town and didn't know anyone and my housing arrangement fell through, and I didn't want to pay for a motel, so I just started sleeping in my car.
Instead of going home and watching TV, you find other things to do. You wander around streets and start to know the area your in. It also makes you cut out all your non essentials. I can actually fit everything into my trunk for when I need to pick someone up who doesn't know about my situation.
I think my future goal is to either buy a piece of land to camp on, or a bigger car
thanks for reply, reason for asking is my company i work for is making us redundant, so i have to pack up and may very well end up in a car living situation, however am quite excited for some reason. I've basically bought all the backpacking equipment even though most unnecessary. Just gotto find a new job maybe in line with what im used to in a new area.
Hope all goes well for you, thanks for the list i've taken all the notes from it! God bless!

If someone from out wanted to gain an appreciation for the crafts on this board, which books would you recommend ?

>makes a broad barely comprehensive post
Yeah this seems right.
>>928576
Into the Wild is a constant #1 for people on this board.
>>928576
Jon Krakauer - Into Thin Air
Gary Paulsen - Winterdance
Thoreau - Walden
Some of Yeats's work (ie the Song of the Wandering Aengus)
Moitesser - The Long Way
I also think Steinbeck and Kerouac do a good job of portraying the outdoors. It's not so much living off the land for pleasure as opposed to the necessity for it. If that's the case, I would also recommend Three Deaths and Kholstomer by Tolstoy - more about the connection of man and animals with the land.
Looking for stories, advice, and of course, gear.
Specifically, I'm looking to camp in the Yucatan Peninsula and Central America over the next couple of months.
Therefore, in no particular order:
>tents
>sleeping gear (cot/hammock)
>footwear
>advice on insects and poisonous snakes
& anything else that's useful.
Thanks, anons.

How do you get into hunting as an adult?
I live in FL and I've grown up on the beach doing beach things, but I've always been really interested in hunting, particularly hogs, gator and coyote. The thing is that I'm not really sure where to go or what to do, or how to really get started. Everybody i know who hunts has been doing it since childhood, and any time i ask about it i just get vague answers. Any tips or advice?
Not a hunter but I can tell you what i know. Just googling hunting for beginners or hunting 101 will explain you the basics. You should be able to find a hunting course near you also by googling it, as you must pass hunting safety course before you get your licence.
>>925702
Also, my biggest fear with hunting (or most /out/ activities for that matter, but especially the ones involving weapons) is being hunted. I'm not white, and I don't want to get miles out innawoods only to get shot at by some supremacist redneck who could easily claim he thought I was a deer (assuming they ever find me.)
How do I overcome this? It's seriously restricting my enjoyment for almost all /out/ things that don't take place in the public eye.
>>925704
What comes after these courses? So you know your safety and you have a license... But what are you supposed to do with it from that point?
Why do I never see any Americans with knife sets like this?
Do you not like sharp knives?
There seems to be a trend for huge 1/4 inch thick "camp knives" (WTFF? Live trees? Leave the bush as you found it) or for those little scandinavian knives that cant cut deeper than their bevel.
I have never had to baton wood with a knife and if I am in an area where I need to cut vines or brambles I use a pair of secatuers on my hunting belt.

http://www.harborfreight.com/60-inch-x-80-inch-wool-blanket-92625.html
Opinion on these blankets? I own four, keep one in my car, and take two with me anytime I go camping.
Saved my ass when temps dropped to low 30's in the dessert night instead of the usual 50F.
And kept me dry during a 2 day non-stop drizzle. Sat outside near the fire, never got wet, and the fire dried up the blanket well.
I dont even bother with a mattress when I plan on packing light, just fold one in half, and sleep on it.
I've tried to find those on multiple occasions but my local HF never has them. I know they're cheap matted rat hair but if I can just inspect one in person before I buy I'd feel better about it. I don't want anything that'll fall apart or make too much of a mess.
I used one for about a year on emt shift. It's about as warm as a comforter at about 1/4 the size, and 1/3 the weight. But I found it a bit too itchy. Usually ended up putting a sheet between me and it.
Also would have preferred it to be another foot longer, so I didn't have to be in the fetal position to form a proper cocoon.
>>922607
My HF has a whole rack of them in stock. Its cheap, its itchy, but its durable. Its edges are sawed well, and it has not ripped for me.
Ok guys, I know its early but I have it on good authority that the Rainbow Gathering will be in Oregon this year!!
Can we have our first /out/ meetup there?
I know there was a push for this last year but it started too late for people to plan.

Lol no.

This is a fabulous idea. I will be the one with the beard and glasses. My name is jack but I go by jackey or jackistan. Im also white so I should be easy to spot outta the crowd. Just walk up and say hey.

Hi, I'm an /out/ist from Russia. I can tell you something about our outdoor-life if you are interested. Have you any questions about it?
I will post only photos of events, where i have taken part, without random internet pictures.
And I'm sorry for mistakes in advance.
I live in Moscow and i belong to the mountaineering club of Moscow Aviation Institute. It is small community, about one hundred members. We train together twice a week, the main part of our training is a running, but majotity of the members also engaged in rock-climbing or drytooling or trailrunning or something else.
We have our own room in the building of the Institute, where we get together, spend time and celebrate holidays.

In the last summer I was in the Caucasus, there many nice places. This photo was taken in our camp.
>Stay up drinking all night
>yet plan to be on the ice by noon..
>I can't sleep, bros are snoring logs...
>I'm driving..
This isn't going to be fun until we're in the shack and I can kill this hang over I'm anticipating with a big Jake or three beers..
Life is so hard up here in Canada.
