I thought it was mostly garbage even back when it was released. Graphics are a fucking eyesore, gameplay is a pain in the ass, and it's incredibly small and linear with no real exploration or discovery to be had.

It was though, at least at the time of it's release.

Let's face it, dealing with huge CRTs can be a pain in the ass. They are heavy, no longer in production, and have other isues(distorted geometry, not all have component, etc..). What are some great LCD displays or monitors that offer <30ms lag that can be used in place of a CRT for retro gaming?

I've been playing Suikoden 1.
I'm at the part where my crew disguised our identities to cross the great wall and now we can't go back across.

So far the game is comfy but the combat is "mash X to win" only needing potions and spells for bosses. Does it get better?

I've heard Suikoden 2 is the high point of the series. How does it improve on the original?
How do Suikoden 3,4, and 5 compare to the PS Suikodens?
What about the spin offs?:
Genso Suikogaiden
Card Stories
Suikoden Tactics
Tierkreis

Suikoden is loosely based on the famous Chinese novel Water Margin.
What other games are based on this book?

Which games are based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms?
Which games are based on Journey to the West?
Which games are based on Dream of the Red Chamber?
Which games are based on The Plum in the Golden Vase?
Which games are based on The Scholars?

How do I not get rekt by the aliens before I can even see them? even if I do see them before the massacre starts my units miss every shot anyway.

toss some smoke grenades down before you let your guys off the ship
>>
>>3642134
If you're fighting at night you're doing it wrong. If it's a terror mission and you don't want to use the always fight at day exploit (which you shouldn't), just land and take off again, you can make up the points elsewhere.

And >>3642142 is correct.

Also do nothing on your first turn so the aliens don't have full TUs for reaction shots.
>>
>>3642134

Throw smoke grenades in a perimeter as you set up. Then throw flares past the smoke. The first part of the game is the hardest, as you have a big disadvantage in weaponry and armor, so play more carefully.

Favorite faction?

I say the Gaians are best of original 7.

Their +1 planet bonus is not just for taming worms.
It make land units almost always penetrate fungus tiles. This let's you explore easily when other factions are struggling to enter the fungus, even explorer Santiago's rovers get hemmed in by it.
Gaians also get +1 food on fungus which makes it viable to supply crawler them.

They start with Centauri Ecology the best tech in the game.

+2 Efficiency means you can build more bases and farther bases before you get bureaucracy drones and energy loss.
Combined with Democracy or Green you get +4 efficiency and can go 100% research or money losslessly letting you hit goals very fast.

Their weaknesses?
-1 police just means you can't nerve staple. No big deal. It also makes choosing police state less effective but that setting is only good for Yang anyway.

-1 morale only matters during wartime. Just build some extra units to compensate. It doesn't stop your units from reaching elite anyway.

Their last weakness is they can't run free market which only advance players can manage anyway. They can still get +1 energy/square with wealth and a golden age (efficiency helps with that).

Does anyone own any of these?

I'm having a hard time deciding whether to go with vertical or horizontal. It seems like horizontal is the best because it replicates the original box but some of the other systems like NES only come in vertical.

>>
>>3640992
If you have a bunch of N64 boxes and you want to mix these replacements in, then I would get horizontal. Otherwise I would get vertical just because that's the standard.

(I assume the image is showing an example of horizontal.)

Before this thread goes any further. Please do not respond to the learn Japanese because translations suck crew that will most certainly make an appearance in this thread. Learning Japanese is a good suggestion but it is not for everyone. If you legitimately want to learn Japanese I'm sure resources will be posted, but remember this is a thread to talk about games you'd like to see translated, not ethics in game translation.

Let's talk PC98.

Specifically how SL9821 is a newly-made PC-98 emulator.
http://www.satotomi.com/sl9821/

But you need a specific set of ROM files from a specific real PC98 to use it.

Any progress on procuring a set of those?

Since I'm never going to be able to afford a Hi-Def NES mod or even the NES RGB mod, it looks like my best option is to look into getting a Nintendo AVS.

Does anyone have one of these? What are people's experiences? I know it only does 720p but apparently it looks fine on 1080p displays and with the newest firmwire update has options to make the color pallete 1:1 with original NES hardware based off composite video analysis someone did.

I don't emulate, so no emulation stuff.
189 posts and 18 images submitted.
>>
Lots of people have been buying them and the seem like an acceptable middle ground for people like you.
>>
>>3636285
It's a fantastic system, OP. The 720p is stunning despite the fact it doesn't have 1080p.

It's an actual hardware reproduction. It uses custom circuitry to essentially reproduce the NES circuitry. So it has the same exact slowdown, sprite limitations, and all that of the original NES. Every game plays flawlessly, and dirty cartridges and half inserted carts produce the same flaws they would on an original NES.

It's basically an exact replica of the hardware using new technology. There would normally be no point to do this (who the fuck would reproduce slow and flawed hardware), but, because retro stuff is big now it's happened.

The Analogue NT is a meme and for 600 dollars is a ripoff. They use torn up NES parts and it's still a meme. The Hi-Def NES is going for like 600 dollars now too, which is also a meme. The actual NES original console is worth maybe 100 bucks if it's in good condition, and someone should be able to buy the mod and do it for around 300 total including NES, but they instead charge double the price because people are stupid fucks and paying it.
>>
>>3636298
What's the difference between the AVS and stuff like the Retron? Retron is way cheaper.
