So, today I tried to hook up my SNES, inserted a game and the console started up but all I got was a black screen.
The console is clearly on power, as evidenced by the red light. It's a PAL one and I connected it through a generic composite video cable. The TV also reacts to it when I turn it on but all I get is this black screen.
Any idea how to fix this?
Side note: My N64 and PS1 work.
>>3650213
try getting a tv that isntnt a piece of shit retard
>>3650213
Try cleaning the cartridge contacts.
Make sure the cartridge is set all the way in.
Other than that, who knows.
I remember when this was the coolest thing id ever seen in a video game
Do you have any vr moments like this?
>>3650206
Seeing Virtua Fighter and Mortal Kombat 2 for the first time in arcades had a lasting impression on a younger me. Booting up my Playstation and playing Tekken 2 and Tomb Raider also.
The first time I did Scorpion's rope special move and it connected.
The first time I played Street Fighter EX plus Alpha on the PSX.

The final boss of stage 1 in Contra III on SNES was one of those "coolest things I've ever seen" moments for me.
View first unread post You really need to play Magical Pop'n. It's quite good.

Cool! When I get my new laptop, this will be the first thing I play.
There's probably a treasure trove of /vr/ related stories to be found on twitter from developer accounts. Why is no one on this?

Tell me some cool accounts and I will do a terrible job of attempting to trnslate something

Hey guys I need some /vr/ certified tips
I'm playing this for the first time. It's also my first SH game and I'm loving it so far, I just need to know a few things.
Is it intended for me to fight most enemies or run from most enemies and only fight when I have to? I feel like I'm burning through resources, but running away from everything doesn't feel like the way the game was supposed to be played.
Also any general tips on what weapons to use, and how to kill stuff efficiently would be great. I'm pretty early on in the game by the way, just put the medallions in the clock tower of the school
run when outdoors (use the map to know where you're going), fight when indoors
that's the only gameplay related tip you really need for the silent hill series
Outdoor enemies respawn infinitely, but there are ressources in every corner.
Try to save most your ammo that is above pistol grade for bosses.
Use melee combat when you can. Some enmies like nurses are easy that way.
The game is made so that you can run from everything and that you can also kill everything (with melee at least), it's up to you really.
You're the kind of guy who needs a hammer. Keep your eyes peeled for it. Pipe until then.
What's the most convenient way to convert a VGA output from a laptop into component/composite/s-video? I want to run emulators on my CRT.
>>3649858
These things do a pretty good job
Get a VGA CRT
>>3649867
I bought one of these for s-video -> VGA but the opposite doesn't work. The VGA in is just for overscan fixes or something.
Of these Final Fantasies, which is the best? I've already played IV, VI, and VII, so disregard those.
Also Final Fantasy thread I guess.
V
VI
out of the ones you haven't played? IX
Shadow Warrior or Blood?
Which is better, you mean?
Blood.
>>3649752
I think OP is asking which of them is the first.... person-shooter game.
Shadow Warrior came out before Blood, OP. It was the first person-shooter game between them.
>>3649738
BLOOD
How would the world be different if Sega kept Alex?
Less Sonic fetish art on DeviantArt, I guess.

That being said, man google is your friend and youtube. Just look up top whatever lists for the consoles you want to play, that should cover most of the 'most plays'. Sites like HG101 (oh yeah I went there) are good for more obscure shit.
Hey guys, can we have a thread dedicated to interesting articles or interviews about retro vidya?
I'll start by posting This 1989 discussion between Shigeru Miyamoto and Yuji Horii.
http://www.siliconera.com/2011/12/10/origins-of-the-legend-of-zelda-a-link-to-the-past-and-dragon-quest-iv/
This page has tons of links about Lobotomy Software.

> Horii: so we can all agree Zelda 3 is going to be a masterpiece, but what gives it the retro feel?
>>3649482
I'm interested in how Miyamoto was saying it was going to have a party system.
>always hated metroidvanias
>everyone says how perfect super metroid is
Perfect games don't exi..
>play this
And I still don't like metroidvanias but Super Metroid is probably by far the best one in the genre so it doesn't really matter. I don't even know what to say. The graphics, the music, the atmosphere, the controls, the level design, the game progression, no handholding - forcing the player to learn trough the level design, the game is just masterfully crafted.
>>3649439
Super Metroid and Zelda ALTTP are the best games developed by Nintendo for the SNES. Mario's and all the spinoffs don't even come close.
>>3649439
>The graphics, the music, the atmosphere, the controls, the level design, the game progression, no handholding
> the game is just masterfully crafted.
>>3649439
The thing about Metroid games compared to Castlevanias is that since they're missing the EXP based system, combat is more fair and challenging, and relies more on twitch controls. Some Igavanias do that too (though SOTN clearly doesn't), but not to the same extent.
Metroids can be great but I enjoy exploration more in CVs though.
You now remember McGee.

ITT: Thoughts on the Everdrive 64 v3
A custom N64 flashcart cartridge that can play all PAL, NTSC-U & NTSC-J roms on any N64 console WITHOUT EMULATION! We are essentially bypassing the dodgy N64 emulation options by using real hardware with real software, albeit software from roms. No slowdown, no glitchiness, no emulation jank.
It allows us to have nearly 100% compatability with all N64 games ever released worldwide, allows us to play N64 software with our authentic controllers, allows us to quickly use the inbuilt gameshark feature to unlock everything or activate cheats etc., and it allows us to play many modded, homebrew, unreleased and demo games on official hardware.
These mods include:
- Banjo-Kazooie, thanks to the community over at Banjo's Backpack who have crafted many new levels and games in the Banjo-Kazooie engine
- Goldeneye, thanks to the community at GoldeneyeVault, who bring us 85 new multiplayer levels, 93 new singleplayer levels, and most importantly, GOLDENEYE X - which is Goldeneye multiplayer in the more powerful Perfect Dark Engine.
- Perfect Dark mods
- F-Zero mods
- Diddy Kong racing mods
- Etc.
Now my questions to all of /vr/ are:
1) What do you think of the Everdrive N64 v3
2) Do you think it's the perfect way to play N64 roms as it circumvents janky emulation
3) If you had the money, and wanted to buy something really special for your SO who loves the N64, would you buy this as a gift
Cheers guys, some links with more info below.

Yes, it's the best way to play N64 games. Do you think a v4 will be coming out soon?

I don't know, I'm trying to think of what they could improve, but I think they might've nailed it
