I've been playing Suikoden 1.
I'm at the part where my crew disguised our identities to cross the great wall and now we can't go back across.
So far the game is comfy but the combat is "mash X to win" only needing potions and spells for bosses. Does it get better?
I've heard Suikoden 2 is the high point of the series. How does it improve on the original?
How do Suikoden 3,4, and 5 compare to the PS Suikodens?
What about the spin offs?:
Genso Suikogaiden
Card Stories
Suikoden Tactics
Tierkreis
Suikoden is loosely based on the famous Chinese novel Water Margin.
What other games are based on this book?
Which games are based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms?
Which games are based on Journey to the West?
Which games are based on Dream of the Red Chamber?
Which games are based on The Plum in the Golden Vase?
Which games are based on The Scholars?

>Does it get better?
Little bit. But never really super hard.
>I've heard Suikoden 2 is the high point of the series.
Eeeeeeeeeh, it's kind of overrated. Very good and defiantly in the top tier but I feel the second half really loses steam. I won't spoil things but the game reaches it's height in the middle and just sort of coasts down.
>How do Suikoden 3,4, and 5 compare to the PS Suikodens?
3 is good
4 is the weak link but playable.
5 is my personal favorite. Probably has the strongest written protagonists in the franchise, though the villains where kind of weak.
>Genso Suikogaiden
Visual novel
>Card Stories
Forgot that was even a thing
>Suikoden Tactics
Actually very good. Maybe one of the best games in the series even. Which is surprising as it's a direct spinoff of four. You do get carry over bonuses from beating four in it too. As an FYI.
>Tierkreis
Hey, fans!
Yeah, Konami?
You like Suikoden right?
BOY DO WE!
You want a new one!?
MORE THAN ANYTHING!
Well here have this crappy barely connected to anything DS game!
But suikoden's strong point was always it's connect world. What's the point of making a game if it's not set there
Buy it.
But it's not good
I guess interest in the series is gone
>>3643050
Combat gets slightly better, but never anything that great
Suikoden II makes combat a bit more complex, looks nicer, and has a more interesting plot. The localization is a lot worse, be sure to avoid bugs. The ways it connects to the original game make for some great worldbuilding
Never played the other games besides Tierkreis.Tierkreis was ok
>time limit in a fucking RPG
fuck this gay shit
Also Clive's redesign is shit too
Always Kasumi
>>3643216
Ninja sloot is always butter.
But I never could recruit Valeria later even though walkthroughs said I can.
>>3643665
you can't. It's always one or the other. I don't know what walk through you're reading but you got punked
>>3643665
Mutual exclusive.
Just like Boris/Ridley, and the various animal units.
I dunno why the game lets you recruit an extra squid and screw yourself out of the best ending.
>>3643216
Kasumi was fucking NERFED in 2. In 1 she was long range, in 2 she was short range. Seriously what the fuck?
Favorite characters? Retro only of courseso no Geddoe.
Mine:
Tir
Viktor
Luc (I+II of course)
Kasumi
Kahn
>>3643216
Always Kasumi
Always
>>3644328
I always liked Lorelai
>>3642928

>Romance Of The Three Kingdoms
Dynasty Warriors, Romance Of The Three Kingdoms
>Journey To The West
Saiyuki
That's all I can think of/have played. There's probably a bunch more, but probably no localizations for them.
>>3643216
Kasumi is a whiny annoying bitch and went from L to S. If you're a frontliner you better do proper damage, Valeria (being plain cooler aside) can hit so hard that it heals the enemy if her STR is too high.
>>3646034
>can hit so hard that it heals the enemy if her STR is too high.
wait so your argument for her is thats she's completely useless
>>3646053
>don't raise her attack like a retard
>stay under 32768 damage total
>laugh at Kasumi fanboys
>>3646081
man I gotta go for her next time
Some findings on 1st game.
The defense stat reduces damage on a 1/1 ratio.
It can be increased by armor items or leveling up.
The ATK stat makes you do more damage. Upgrade your weapons or level up to increase it.
Speed determines turn order.
Magic determines how many times you can cast spells and how soon you learn them.
What does skill do?
What does luck do?
The defend option during battle doesn't just reduce damage to the character and skip his turn.
It actually aggroes an enemy and makes them hit you.
So if you have a character that is almost dead you do NOT make him defend. Instead a healthy character uses defend to tank the incoming damage and save the wounded guy.
Defend does not work from the back row and only works for one enemy.
>>3646847
>defend makes you more likely to be attacked
well that explains a lot
>>3647691
I found that two characters both defending were always able to draw two enemies to attack them.
The third front row character was never struck.
Defend works best when there are few enemies because each defend action only works on one enemy and lowers your party's damage output.
I don't know if defend works to draw ranged attacks and spells.
>>3648367
Its good info regardless.
>>3642963
>All those ppl that thought Geddoe was him
>>3643050
>How does it improve on the original?
To complement on what others said, the western version (including PSN version) got like 25 bugs including deleting recipes and key items. It's a complete mess and there's a patch to fix everything if you're ok with emulation
>>3643176
Fuck my life but can't remember this one. What is it with the timer?
>>3643216
Yeah, Kasumi.Mostly because I always abused Valeria in I so the kunoichi deserved more love in II. Also, dat scene with McDohl
>>3644328
Hard choice. Always been a fan of the dynamic duo Flit/Viktor, but love Cleo and for some weird reason, Camille. Always thought she was supposed to have some special role in the story for being so active in early gameand being one of the people with special dialogue when Gremio diesthen suddnely disappears.
Also, Sylvina and Tengaar are perfect waifu material.
>>3644328
II has a nice cast. Always liked to carry Rikimaru around because he's cool. People tend to be infatuated with Sierra but never liked her desu. Favorites are Wakaba, Kinnison and, most of all, Nanami. She's adorable and genki done right.
>>3649109
the Suikoden community came up with some far fetched ideas. I remember people saying Jeane was a dog when 3 was new because when you explore the castle as the pup she makes some vague comment on him knowing what she is
>>3643067
>I guess interest in the series is gone
No, now it's gone.
>>3650640
Clive's quest requires you to be at certain areas in the game before enough ingame time passes. The main issue is that you need to get past the point of no return(if you want the best ending) in 20 hours.
>>3644328
Sheena's cool. Goes from a useless bum in I to a cleaned up powerhouse in II.
>>3650687
suikoden is so dead nowadays it hurts
>creators are scattered
>recent games didn't do well
>KONAMI
fuck
>>3650687
Man I forgot that was even a thing. How was it? Judging by it's own merits.
>>3650697
>Clive's quest
Oh, tought it was related to that monster. My bad
>>3643050
>Does it get better?
Sure doesn't
>How does it improve on the original?
It's garbage. Heaps of glitches, untranslated text, the music is awful, level design is just as bad, writing is worse than modern anime.
Good. He's more overrated than Sephiroth
What do you name your army
>>3651454
its not the matter of the character being cool
its the fact that his entire background has been dangled around for 20 years
WHO IS HE
>>3652472
Toran Army in 1, Dunan Army in 2
