Any system, best as in best controls, most comforting, best graphics.
Not best as in die hard difficulty, impossible to play.
shmups have no soul.
It's literally the most soulless genre in all of video games.

Where my /desert rangers/ at?
nobody?
tried getting into it without a manual once, was completely clueless and got raped immediately
>>3643071
i found it pretty easy to get into, at least easier than bard's tale.
you should try again but with the Original Classic remaster, which includes some cool shit like paragraphs being built into the game, narration, music and high res portraits (all toggleable)
honestly the hardest part is probably sitting through the first few hours of the game where you're running quests for the desert nomads and highpool. Once you get to Quartz and Needles the game really starts to pick up and by then you should have a handle on how to play it.
Just make sure you roll your own characters. The basic ones are kinda crappy.
And the game doesn't really ever fake you out over stuff. If it's giving you a warning (IE when you try to get closer to the Guardian Citadel) it's not joshing you, you will get absolutely massacred.
I miss you...
>mother thread
Sure, why not.
Not much to say, unless your something like doom its kinda hard to start discussion of EB without bringing up a specific topic. Still happy to see discussion of it.
>>3641887
It'd be kinda cool if Earthbound ROM hacks were as popular as Doom .wads here, but I think Starmen is the only place that still talks about them. I think. Either that or it's allUndertalediscussion now.
>>3642468
well we had one going for about two months but it eventually got bumped off the board.
lost interest I guess.
Never played this shit back in the day
Really enjoying the retro feel tho.

I had this as a kid. I found it super difficult but fun as fuck.
>>3641729
Music is godly. Game too short.
For my uni thesis I developed a program to generate little fake cities. I imagined turning it into a procedurally generated Blast Corps game based around rogue self-driving vechicles (how topical) and imagined new features to make it easier like lettering Backlash be able to sort of extra the dump bay to avoid the rage of swinging too early and missing the building.
But I'm fucking lazy.
What if Sonic Adventure had been developed for the SEGA Saturn?
It would've still been shit.
Gibsmedat 2.5D Saturn Sanic.
>he doesn't know about Xtreme
>>3641659
Sonic Xtreme isn't Sonic Adventure
It's also shit by the US studio
How I fix his eyes? I used to play this game without problems.
Stop emulating and get a flashcart
>>3641273
Fuck off faggot
>>3641280
No really. N64 emulation is pure trash and completely unpredictable in its behavior.
Either get used to weird visual glitches and crashes, or get a real system and a flashcart like a man.
Looking at getting a Sega CD. Anything I should know?
I see a lot of sellers on ebay selling broken ones that don't power on. Could it most likely be a broken fuse? Any other major issues they suffer?
Anything I should know about burning games?
Should I just not bother because of how clunky it is?
Share any knowledge you have.
>>3641246
You'll spend more time fixing it than playing the handful of games worth playing.
Burn games at the lowest speed on taio juden dics from my jewbay store.
Actually there is something worth knowing about burning. There are a lot of shitty rips out there. Be careful and patient.
There are a few decent Japan exclusives that are playable without knowing moon. If you mastered the whole burning shitty rips successfully you'll know what you need to patch these. If not, a region free or multi bios mod is pretty easy and worth it.
>>3641246
First one I bought "as is" had a broken CD lid, blown fuse, missing RF shielding and screws, and a non-functional limit switch for the laser sled, meaning botched tracking and ruined gears.
Second I bought as tested and working for 5x as much(with a paired Genesis); Blown fuse, dirty and literally buggy where the edge connector goes, and a completely calibrated laser that still isn't functioning properly after 6 or so hours of adjusting pots.
Unless you can test them in person, they really seem to just be a complete crap shoot as to whether you get a gem or a turn in terms of condition.
Either that or I'm just unlucky as shit with Sega CDs; Entirely possible.
>>3641298
>Burn games at the lowest speed on taio juden dics
I see this posted a lot of times but is there any evidence that proves that either Taio CD-R's or burning at the lowest speed makes a burned copy better?
Dear retro-community, I'm a millennial. I find real agony in playing retro games like for example Super Mario World. It's just no fun, because the challenge is too big for me. SNES games are kinda okay, but NES games is like literal gaming hell for me (in the challange and fun department). There's nothing comfy, like playing Ratchet and Clank on PS2. I enjoy N64 games, but also PS1 games, but I'm in kind of a borderline relationship with the SNES. I enjoy all the SNES Final Fantasy titles, but get frustrated with Super Mario World, A Link to the Past or other classics. I wanted to ask, is this a 2d vs 3d thing? Because I generally find 3d games easier. For example Ocarina of Time is easier and more fun than A Link to the Past. Is it because the 3d space leaves more room to flee from attacks, is it because 3d let's you more precisely hit a target, is it because in a 3d world the enemies have it harder to catch you? On the opposite is a 2d world harder, because you can only flee in 4 directions (sometimes also lateral), is it because the enemies can hit you easier on a 2d plane, is it because you need to train really precisely to get the button action right on the 2d plane or else you lose (e.g. battletoads)?
>>3638463
>Why are retro games so hard?
It depends on the person playing the game.
I never struggled as a kid and i dont struggle now.
>>3638468
Do you think that has to do with learning that 2d platforming skill as a kid? I heard people say that is hard for adults to learn trhat kind of gaming skill as an adult, because you didn't learn it as a child. I played Super Mario Land 2 as a child on the game boy but this is a really easy platformer...
Or would you say it is independent of that, and some people are just good at certain games and other don't, no matter the age?
>>3638463
This has to be ironic shitposting.
Everyone found agony in those old games. That's just all we had.
Post retro game music that still haunt you to this very day from childhood. The music that you catch yourself humming without realizing it.

Fuck yeah, I just beat that bitch nigga Dracula, after a childhood of only meeting him through passcodes. What next? Convince me not to play Castlevania II, because I'm probably going to go download it very soon. I also have a copy of CV64 sitting in front of me as well.
You are angry now.
Don't play Shitlines.
>>3637960
Don't worry. I'm limiting myself to what I can play on my 3DS, SNES, or N64. No emulation.
>>3637958
Did you finish the first one?
Nice day were having...Crash And Spyro were better then Mario and Banjo
>>3637519
Crash Bandicoot 1-3 are amazing games, and Spyro the Dragon 1-3 are amazing games.
Sony really did platforming better.
Mario > Banjo > Spyro > Poochy
>>3637519
Sorry. Sonic is the best game ever.
Who thought it was a good idea that you need to grind all your life back up trough tedious methods after you die?
Who thought it was a good idea to not include a map?
Who thought it was a good idea to be able to only hold either the ice beam or the wave beam?
Who thought it was a good idea to make the wave beam later in the game but the ice beam being a necessity for platforming elements and the whole last part of the game to defeat the metroids?
Who thought it was a good idea to make so many enemies jump right into your face when you enter a new room?
With a map out of the internet the game is pretty good but I can't even imagine playing this without one. You literally need to draw a map yourself to even stand a chance.
The lack of map is justified, technical constraints I assume.
Drawing maps for old games while playing them is pretty fun though.
gitgud the game is very easy once you know the optimal route
>>3635987
I already beat the game so I don't need to git gud.
Except for the beginning a few times and in the last part of the game with the metroids I never even died in the game. But the few attempts it took me in the metroid part was just tedious as fuck because you need to grind your health back up.
