What the fuck is going on with the people in this picture? They all look hella uncomfortable: glaring at the ground, hands stiff in pockets, grimacing, etc

Superior games of competing companies thread.

I remember this released around the same time as Wave Race 64 and everybody was like "Dude wave race has so much better graphics". Didn't matter, Jet Moto was way more fun. What were some other similar-themed games across competitors?

it must suck to only enjoy just jet moto.
i can enjoy both games fine.
>>
>>4088118
Uh Wipeout vs F-Zero, 1080 vs Cool Boarders, Wave Race vs Jet Moto, Twisted Metal vs Vigilante, Metal Gear Solid vs Syphon Filter (maybe)
>>
>>4088118
Interesting topic, thought wave race and jetMoto are not easy to compare, gameplay wise. You can compare them marketing wise. Nintendo had the stronker marketing and the all age approach. I agree that I prefer jet moto over wave race, and we live in a trash world were marketing rules over the idiot masses.

>>4088257
Never enjoyed Wipeout. Fancy graphics, but didn't feel good to play. I love F-Zero, love the way it plays and the track and ship designs.

1. Did you grow up before the year 2000 to actually truly experience retro gaming?

2. Does it ever depress you that the retro generations are very old now by today's standards?

3. Do you feel awful that modern gaming isn't anything like retro gaming?

4. Do you think retro games will eventually become long forgotten about in the not too distant future?

5. If you could go back to experience it all over again would you?

I seriously miss these times. It just isn't the same anymore. I always fear that these games will eventually die out in my lifetime. That there will come a point where too many years have passed by where people don't care anymore because they are too young to care. I already see so much of this on /v/ now. I haven't even been coming to this site as long as many of you guys yet already I've noticed a huge shift in what /v/ likes. Soon enough a board such as /vr/ will have no appeal to the younger generations.

Gaming isn't going to get better.
>where people don't care anymore because they are too young to care.
They care. They just don't like it and instead want to continue supporting CoD, GTA, and other shooters and cinematic games.
>>
>>4085993
Hey friend, for me it isn't even just that CoD and GTA is popular. In fact I wouldn't even care if the rest of the industry was a lot better or similar to what true retro gaming was like.

For people who didn't grow up at the time it is probably a lot harder for them to comprehend but gaming has clearly changed big time from what it used to be and I am not talking about the technology getting "better" here.

The values of the industry changed for the worst. Since there are more people playing games than ever these masses steer the industry into mostly producing certain types of games that are guaranteed to sell.

You even have people that actually say things like a video game being too "gamey" like that is a fucking bad thing. The reason such a thing has even been invented in the first place is because so many games keep trying to go for more "realism" and so many of them play more like an interactive movie then what games used to be like.

>so tldr
Yeah gaming is awful and that is largely thanks to changed values on what a game should be like and what people want in games. Also time of course was always eventually going to pass retro games by and changes should have been expected. Still though I doubt few of us would have expected what we got.
>>
Modern gaming isn't all that bad, you've just been spending too much time in /v/'s bubble of negativity. I think Nintendo Switch will come through with some gems, and the SNES classic will bring retro back to mainstream for a little while.

>>4085993
I liked GTA and COD ever since the first entries in their respective series. I'm less on board with COD now since I only liked Infinity Ward, but I'm interested in going back to WW2. Rockstar games are as fun as ever.

What are some good Active Role Playing Games, /vr/?
No, seriously, I'm looking for good early ARPGs, like Ys, Xanadu and Hydlide, where you need to explore the world without any clues on what to do whatsoever, find new equipment, fight monsters for EXP and so on. Full-on trial and error. Can you suggest me some?

It was called Pokémon yellow, but it was a GBA game. It was a difficult platformer, you could choose to be pikachu, taz from Looney toons, or some weird blue cat-raccoon thing. There was a POW bar and when full you could do a special attack. Anyone played this?

Now that I've researched the pros and cons of the 1-Chip SNES compared to the older models, I was hoping to hear about your experiences with them, and whether (you) think it's still the best way to play SNES despite the supposed drawbacks.

Argument for 1-Chip
>Cleaner, sharper image quality via RGB
>Less prone to the 'vertical bar' issue

Arguments against 1-Chip
>Image is "too sharp", not what Nintendo intended
>Glitches with some games
>Ghosting?
>Overly hot/bright whites in the image
>Some very vague reports of slowdown

some relevant links;
http://retrorgb.com/snesversioncompare.html
http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=46303

Ultimately if 1-Chip is worth it, I'll buy a Super Famicom. If not, I'll just mod my 1993 PAL snes for 60Hz.
Thanks

If you live somewhere that you have easy access to 60Hz CRTs with RGB SCART I think you'll be very happy with a 1chip but I don't know how much it'll cost you to import one. I have 2 that I got for like $20 each but sellers who "know what they have" usually jack their listings way up.
>>
>>4085467
1CHIP is not less prone to the vertical bar issue. All models are equally likely of getting it.

The only real advantage of 1CHIP is its sharpness. For some people, that's a massive advantage.

I don't like it because I know how Nintendo achieved it. It wasn't by improving the SNES PPU or anything like that, but by ripping out image processing filters to save money.

Nintendo did a similar thing on the N64 Funtastic series.

I thought it would be fun if we tried to name all the /vr/ ninjas we can think of and see how many we can come up with.

Try to only do 1 per post so everyone has a chance to name one.

Ideally put their game in too if it's something obscure.

I'll start off with Ryu Hayabusa from my favorite game, Ninja AME.

The first two games have so much greater level design, while Hard Corps has excellent boss fights. Alien Wars just does nothing right, honestly, yet for some reason this one tops everybody's list of favourite Contra games.

It aged badly due to its artificial difficulty and trial-and-error gameplay, yet still has a retro feel. I play it with my wife's son regularly.

Great music, sound and athmosphere, Awesome monster design. And fantastic events, like plane throwing bombs, boss smashing through wall, bike level with tons of sub bosses. Actually all levels have tons of subbosses, so its a great study for game design. The heroes in the us version a garbage, but I love the bots in the pal version

If you are wanting to focus on the visual intricacies of a certain display device, then no, I guess it wouldn't be possible to capture it in a photograph that is then viewed on an entirely different display device.

Honestly, if you want or need pixels that sharp, you might a swell just emulate and save the hundreds of dollars on equipment that was never meant for gaming.

So a few years back a pal gave me four Atari STs, all with no cables and no idea what condition they were in.

I want to start testing them to see if they can be brought back to life.

I'm scared to power them on incorrectly - it would be awful to fry one straight from the get-go.

What kind of power cable did these things use? Can I just use one of the standard, large square-tipped three prong power cables that you'd stick in a modern monitor or PC?

Google just turns up results for internal ST power supply issues - no info about what kinda cable these things natively used outta the box.

Also does anyone use an SD card loader on one of these beasts? I'd really prefer to go that route than fuck with some ancient floppies. Is Ultrasatan the standard for that? Shit's expensive...

They use bog-standard three-prong power cables.
