So besides the obvious monster catching game, what are some decent RPG's for the gameboy/gameboy color?

Most famous are the pokemon games of course but the SaGA games (final fantasy legends in US) games are well received. Never played them myself but I have heard the legemd of the river king games ares good.

Dragon quest III on snes is such a phenomenal remake that playing the gbc is just crazy. DQI and DQII is a bit debatable but DQIII on snes is the absolute defi itive version.
Lufia 3
Give Lufia a try. Haven't played it myself in awhile, but from what I recall, it was pretty decent. Definitely worth spending a few hours in to see if it's your thing. Unfortunately, this doesn't work with Super GameBoy. Just so you know.
the two harry potter games are enjoyable for movie game standards
Wizardry

I had this as a kid (I think I later traded it for MGS Ghost Babel and never got it back).
So much fucking content for a small GBC game, man.
Saga series
Legend of the River King
Aretha if you can read Japanese

river king is probably the best rpgs on there aside from those who really like pokemon.

The GBC has a crap ton more of content, what is not debatable is playing DQI-II on the SNES.
Grandia Parallel Trippers
