I bought this Metroid NES cartridge from GameStop many years ago (I think either 2002 or 2003), and I know it looks different from the average Metroid cartridge, so I have two questions:
1. Is this an official published variant by Nintendo or is it a weird bootleg?
2. Does this have any value whatsoever, or is it completely worthless?
>>3186738
It's a re-release variant. It's legit.
PAL release looked like that
It's exactly as valuable as the original release.
What's the best chapter and why is ityour favorite.

>>3186716
Yeah that one was great even if a bit short. On the other hand, you don't have to worry about it dragging on for too long.

Wasn't there a LAL thread last night? Was that one deleted?

in the garbage, where it deserves. Nobody cares about the previous two, they were just dust covers for MVS slots

Shock Troopers sucks.

Holy crap is that Scott Wolf? I knew I avoided that movie for a reason.

Is that Iron chef?
I had it on VHS. I actually liked it.
It sucked.
Is Cadash worth playing? Specifically the Genesis version that doesn't have the priest or ninja. Is it worth my time or should I just pass it over?
Do you like clunky as fuck gameplay for REAL CHEST INHAIR MEN?
>>3186175
Clunky I can deal with if it's interesting.
Is the TG16 version any different from the Genesis version? Which is better?
3D accelerated audio.
In games with multiple API, support, which one is superior? Aureal A3D, Creative EAX or DirectSound 3D?

>Creative Labs sued Aureal for patent infringement in March 1998 [1], and Aureal countersued for patent infringement and deceptive trade practices. Aureal won the lawsuit brought by Creative in December 1999. However, the cost of the legal battle caused Aureal's investors to cease funding operations, forcing Aureal into bankruptcy.
>Creative then acquired Aureal's assets in September 2000 through the bankruptcy court with the specific provision that Creative Labs would be released from all claims of past infringement by Creative Labs upon Aureal's A3D technology. Creative Labs has not chosen to support the A3D API.
Wow. Just fucking wow.
>>3186215
Creative is run by Hitler, we all know that. Just don't buy their shit. By the way you don't need one of their X-Fi bullshit products for using Creative ALchemy (which enables EAX in Vista onwards), there is a patch for version 1.45.03 that removes this bullshit restriction. No need to give them jewgolds.

Here's a comparison in Descent 3.
A3D 2.0 focus more on audio positioning, and do so very well. EAX 2 is just a reverb effect on steroids, it's better than the typical flat audio in some games (like Diablo 2 dungeons), but these faggots killed Aureal just because their technology was superior.
Midi>CD orchestra shit
depends
but midi does allow for playing around with soundfonts and dynamic tracks
sometimes it's just poorly composed/sequenced, though
ok but why deviled eggs

Midi means noon in french
noon is 12 oclock
12 eggs
eggs are 0 shapped.
I thought the level design was awful.
The way the levels were designed, you rarely got the chance to have sonic pick up speed and do acrobatics. The pace of the whole game was similar to that of marble zone in sonic 1.
Too many springs and not enough open spaces to enjoy acrobatics or jumping on a succession of enemies.
The music sucked: the whole soundtrack felt like an attempt to sound "cool" to emerging teenage boys of the 90s.
>>3185860
>you rarely got the chance to have sonic pick up speed and do acrobatics
Not the point of Sonic CD for better or worse.

Both of 'em?
Hipsters

Just got sonic 3 + sonic and knuckles in the mail and cleaned them up both work fine separate but just glitches out after the sega screen when locked on (sonic and knuckles locks on perfectly fine with other games) anyone ever have similar problems?

Wassoup, /vr/. I've never been a fan of the NES, though not for a lack of trying. I was wondering if you guys knew any games that might change my mind or perspective on the console.
The best of the best games you can think of, I'll try anything. Thanks for any suggestions.

So you've played NES games, but just didn't like them? Might help if we knew which NES titles you played.
Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers is an underrated gem and excellent platformer. Play that one, anon. You'll like it.I hope.

Why isn't it more well loved?
>>3185086
It's unfortunately one of those games that is doomed to be forever obscure.
it ain't even that good,
It is quite loved, although in a very niche way.
Probably it's bigger problem is the lack of a U/E release, even if now we have the extremely well done hack from Aeon. Another thing is that it's stories are short and won't shine that bright on their own.
But it is very well loved within it's niche of less known famicom releases.
So, i want to update my MAME installation to the latest one, ive been using build 0.131 for years because i just didnt want the hassle of updating and checking ROM versions and all that shit.
But now i wanna try some of the new games that dont work on the version im using so i need some advice here.
Whats the easiest, quickest, safer way of checking if the ROMs i have are co0mpatible with the latest MAME build, and then how can i remove the ones that wont work so i can download them again? i did a manual check and in the latest build im missing around 100 games from the list, obviously i have those games since they are showing on my old build and i can play them fine.
How can i achieve this without doing it manually and checking if the ROM sets just changed their names ?

Get yourself RomCenter. Point it at the latest version of mame you have installed(currently 0.173). It will build a .dat file. Once it's finished(will take time), point it at your rom directory, and let it do it's thing. It will fix/rename stuff as needed, provided you actually have the needed files. It will also tell you 99% of the time if you are missing any needed files for a game.(Doesn't always catch missing BIOS files, like for SF Rush) For "current enough" roms that are mostly compatible with the current set, download whatever you need from edgeemu.
Personally I prefer merged romsets where every single variant and bootleg of a rom is in a single .zip, but you may prefer to go split.
>>3185259
Wheres a good place to get the roms with all variants?
>>3185267
The only place I know that distributes merged romsets is pleasuredome. I'm making my own with RomCenter.
Retro Games that most surprised you and excited you for the future? Either innovative or just showed a totally new perspective on a genre that you haven't seen yet.

Pitfighter. Photographic sprites made me think video games could be totally real.
In 1994 I got a 3do, I played total eclipse and road rash. People were playing super metroid and final fantasy VI and I was playing 3d games. And sure, I also played final fantasy, super metroid I played much later (fantastic). But yeah, 3d games with cd quality soundtracks. Sure, the 3do sucked balls on hindsight, but if it was 1994 and you saw one your inner kid would wet their pants.
Full Throttle. It was like playing trough an actual 2D animated cartoon!
Then, shortly after, the 3D craze happened with all its blocky brown and bloom and both 2D gaming and the animation world suffered.
I liked it better when things were more varied and of higher standard on the 2D front.
How do I quick save on this thing? Is it even a feature?
It's Chinese everdrive md

This thread is dedicated to those among us who are actively working through a series they neglected growing up. DISCLAIMER: Not my image. I know some are missing.
I am working through Final Fantasy. I am on #5, just starting, right now. Having an emulator that supports fast forward is ESSENTIAL, I feel.
I want to hear what series other people are working through in order, since you're all old-bros here, and are able to undertake long adventures, such as Dragon Quest, etc.
>>3184854
I just started Breath of Fire last night because my friend gave me his copy of Dragon Quarter, and I realized I'd never played any in the series.
The localization on the first one is pretty terrible. However, I hear that they get increasingly better as the series goes on.
I just beat the second boss, who was actually moderately difficult, and now I'm trying to figure out what I'm supposed to do next. It's grind heavy, but I like to watch movies while I grind in these old JRPGs.
I'm going to play Rogue Galaxy after I finish this series, then I'm going to play through another series. Probably Dragon Quest or the Persona series.
>>3184927
The grindiness is super abated by a fastforward button in your emulator. The PSP emulator for Android has one, and it means you can turn on auto, watch TV, and just hit X over and over again to farm and grind.
The translations is a big issue, though. For example, when Playing FF2, I had the choice of about 20 different fan translations. I went with the official PSP port in the end. FF2 was my favorite BTW...
I've never done any Breath of Fires. Are they different from the DQ/FF genre in any meaningful way?
>>3184927
Breath of Fire 2's official localization is pretty bad.
