Got my Japanese MegaDrive today.

So the question is... What do I do with the other one?

AES? I guess so, if only because prices are insane and you are paying a premium simply to have it on AES as opposed to the equally official MVS carts. Official MVS carts of the same games are often much, much cheaper, but they just don't look as "pretty" and are a little bit less user-friendly in terms of figuring out how to run them (not to mention that with a Unibios you can even access the AES-exclusive modes of games).

That better be bait, son.

I only ever played Alex Kidd in Miracle World, but it was one of my favourites. Though, looking back, that game is bullshit levels of hard.

It stinks

First one is a neat game and only overlooked because it was on the SMS. Lots of cool power ups like helicopters and motorcycles.

Haven't played Alex Kid in Shinobi World but people say it's the best of the bunch. Have to catch up on that.

The Genesis game was meh. Didn't play much of it since it was a snorefest.

I was a Nintendo kid, but I want to try what other companies had to offer, so I'm thinking about buying a Mega Drive (Genesis).

I looked through the libary, watched videos, read descriptions, looked at screenshots, etc. for everything that sounded interesting and came up with the following:

>Sonic the Hedgehog
>Phantasy Star II
>Outrun
>Mutant League Hockey
>King of Monsters
>Altered Beast

Ist this a good list for starters?
Anything good I'm missing?
What's the maximum I should pay for these games?

My only experience with Sega are their offerings on 6th gen consoles after they stopped making hardware and playing a MD once with a friend who rented one. Some Turtles side scroller (anyone know what I'm talking about?)

I was also a nintendo kid, but i recently discovered gunstar heroes and have been playing the shit out of it. it's a bit pricey if you're buying physical copies, but it's a truly awesome game.

Are any of these USB SNES controllers actual good quality?
27 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Apparently Buffalo still makes a pretty good SNES knockoff controller but another thing to consider is that 1:1 clones like in your pic can often just pcb swap with a real SNES controller. Also, keep usb controller adapters in mind. That's what I use, with real hardware. Maybe you live somewhere retro oem controllers are rarer though.

Where do you draw the line between "weird edgecase of the game system" and "glitch"?

For example, in Mario 1, any time you make contact with an enemy, as long as you have downward momentum, it's considered a stomp, which goes to you. If you don't have downward momentum, it's considered a hit, which goes to the enemy. This means that you can safely tomp falling goombas from the bottom as long as you are travelling downward when the goomba hits your head. Is this a glitch, or is it just a weird emergent edgecase?

If exploiting a glitch is cheating, then this distinction becomes even more important. Of course, exploiting a glitch isn't cheating, so that particular point is moot.

>>
A glitch is something that occurs outside of what is intended. It's an abnormailty. Your Mario example is interesting and odd, but the game is working as it was designed to, so it's not a glitch.
>>
>>3176347
mario is designed to work like that so its not a bug, just weird programming. A bug is something like certain Final Fantasy 1 spells just not fucking working.
>>
>>3176373
One might say the same for all the weird wall jumps and passing through walls and stuff but that seems a little murkier.

You know how in the original Super Mario Brothers, as well as in original SNES version of Super Mario World, if you took one hit you reverted back to small Mario, even if you had a second level power up?

The US version of SMB3 was the game that introduced the mechanic of taking one hit, reverting to Super Mario, then taking another hit, and reverting to small Mario.

Was this a good change or a bad change?

If you're willing to drop money on an unofficial cartridge, then just get a flash cart and you can own every single game in that console's library - all on a single cart.

Are there any replacement contacts for Nintendo controllers that aren't crap? I just bought some SNES that looked like this and I was disappointed by how much thinner the material was than the original contacts, especially because it caused functional problems like Link moonwalking in Legend of Zelda. They weren't that expensive but I don't really see any point in using them.

Are there any replacement contacts that are as good as the original? My iBuffalo USB clone controller works perfectly, but can I buy just a set of rubber contacts anywhere that work that well?

On a side note, the black stuff on the PCB's D-pad contacts for my SNES controller is really worn down and I can see exposed copper in some parts. Should I be worried about this? Is there anything I should put on there to restore what I assume is a protective conductive coating?

I found the best way to do it is to buy broken originals and part them out and just discarding the broken pieces

Unfortunately the D-pad is usually the first thing to go, so sourcing replacement rubber contacts from broken controllers is kind of pointless.

I decided to give a shot at ordering a different variety from another seller. If you look at the ones in my OP, they're coloring looks similar to what's found in the original controller, but if you look at the fastening loops on the button sheet, they are extremely thin compared to the originals. Overall the material is very light and thin compared to an official one.

The ones I just ordered are pic related. Maybe they're just as bad but I won't really know until I found out. They're from a US eBay seller with good ratings, so we'll see. If nothing else I will at least be able to do a full review of both types. There's other varieties as well, although this one seemed to be in a reasonable price range and it's not shipping from china. If it's a dud maybe I'll try the remaining types to see if I can find a winner and review all of them. 3rd party repair parts are always hit or miss but I'm hoping I eventually find a hit.

For now I can say definitely avoid replacement contacts that look like the ones in the OP, though. They will basically make your official SNES controller feel like a poorly made chinese knockoff, and your characters will be doing a lot of moonwalking. It's more responsive than a worn out set of official contacts, but that's not worth much if they mess up the mechanics of the D-pad to the point of interfering with gameplay.
>>
>>3175663
I ordered replacement contacts like in >>3175916
and after cleaning my controller and replacing it, the button presses are much better now. Especially the D-Pad and the four action buttons are improved. The only downside is that the start and select rubber is actually a little shorter so you can obviously see it's not original when you assembled everything together. The start and select buttons are functional however so I won't complain. Definitely go for something like this if you need to fix your SNES controller!

First one is definitely the best by far. Too bad it is impossible to play multiplayer of it today. I'd suggest you to play the deeper dungeons expansion as well.
