I just started my travel in South East Asia some days ago, right now I'm Thailand and then I will end up in Vietnam for some weeks.

Do someone of you knows if it's something possible or recommended to move from Vietnan to China, passing thought Japan and Korea and then take the trans-Siberian from Vladivostok to go back in Europe?
All this by taking only trains, buses and ferry boats
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
It's very much doable, going to take you a couple of weeks, though. Like the Trans-Siberian is a week by itself, and that if you don't stop. (And why wouldn't you stop in a few places.)
I personally enjoy the Chinese bullet trains, so as much as I love Korea, I would go for China and Japan when it comes to trains.
>>

I read that it's not that easy to move from the Vietnamese border to China.
You basically have to walk through.

Since I'm not really interested in China, do you know if there is any train that goes directly to Shangai?

Possibly without paying a month rent

An old vagabond in his 60s told me about it over a beer in Central America, goes something like this: The more places you see, the more things you see that appeal to you, but no one place has them all. In fact, each place has a smaller and smaller percentage of the things you love, the more things you see. It drives you, even subconsciously, to keep looking, for a place not that’s perfect (we all know there’s no Shangri-La), but just for a place that’s “just right for you.” But the curse is that the odds of finding “just right” get smaller, not larger, the more you experience. So you keep looking even more, but it always gets worse the more you see.

How much more expensive is it to travel with two check-in bags as opposed to one?

It's a pretty straightforward question. Do airlines normally charge hefty fees for second bags, or are they moving towards a check in allowance based on total weight, etc?

Hi /trv/, this might not be the best place to ask but it's surely better than other boards.

I want to start over again with my life, i can't stand it anymore.
I'm looking for a place where i can legally immigrate to and get a job i like. I couldn't care less about western standards of living, i'm willing to lose all that for a life where i feel like i have control over it.
I have saved up for this during the last years (this year i turn 30 and i live in Europe) so right now i have roughly 32k euros in my bank account. The point is that i have no idea what i am supposed to do with it to achieve what i want.

Any idea? mid-southern african countries maybe? or south-east Asia? what about the pacific islands like Fiji?

>>
What kind of education/training do you have? What kind of jobs are you looking into? What country do you currently live in?
>>
>>1201515
If you want a cheaper standard of living, with a different culture and climate, look for middle income countries that are on the middle of the Human Development Index (which basically measures infrastructure and institutions). If you go to a very poor country, then it actually costs a lot to live a life that a 30 year old European would find acceptable, with decent accommodation, safety, a reasonably healthy diet, etc. So avoid "mid-southern Africa".

How do you all deal with the jittery restlessness that comes with coming home after travelling?

Being home feels eerie, as if everything is at a standstill. I half heartedly expected home to be different after 6 months away, hoping somethings had changed and there was a lot to catch up on. Yet, it's exactly how i remember it, and i can't stand the mediocraty of life here.

Improve your life, simply put. You should have a life you're excited to get back to, whether that be a friends, a hobby, or a job that you love. The ideal you should be striving for is travel being a fantastic part of your life you look forward to, not the thing it revolves around.

Final Destination (2000).jpg

I know that feeling, but for me its a bit different; I sort of look forward to it because I cling to stability.

It is a little eerie, but its a good thing I think. The truth is that life can be mediocre everywhere. I live in a regional tourist city, so its kind of funny. People are coming here to the place I wanna get away from for a while to feel what I need to leave here to experience.

So you see, its everywhere.

I have a different sort of problem, anxiety, I guess. I came here hoping someone might have some encouragement. My nerves are shot and I leave for vacation tomorrow and I haven't taken a major trip in a very long time.

Planning this trip has made me even more a nervous wreck. I am not a lucky person and Im frankly terrified. I hate flying. And in planning, I learned I have next to no faith in my own competence. I also learned I am fundamentally pessimistic at a core emotional level which makes me paranoid as well.

To make things worse, a small plane just crashed from the airport I am leaving from, and there was a mass shooting right next to where I am arriving. I feel horrible that I will be trying to have fun just like they were and they were murdered, many late in life. Im terrified I will mess something up and get stranded.

Terrified. I've had more shots of whiskey this week than the last year. I even re-watched 'Final Destination' looking for clues. Im even thinking about visiting the church to pray for myself and those victims except after so long I would feel like a hypocrite.

Christ I can barely even breathe the last few days...

I've always dreamt of a beachside town in a european country with good music, cheap local food and a non-intrusive attitude locals have. A place where you could walk and get anywhere you needed to. Somewhere you would buy a small modest house where you could escape to and do fuck all. What places should i look into?

i went about 6ish years ago so i dont know how there doing now but i hope i can help.

like all Arabs they will try and pull shit on you for money eg: here look at this watch, im going to talk to you for 30 seconds and after you have to pay me.

almost all Tunisians have been around whites tho cause of it being such a huge beach front vacation spot, being a brit they will basically know everything about you from the amount of you fucks that go there.

but to counter the shitty people there i actually found Tunisians to be my favorite eastern/African people.

legit old roman/Carthaginian ruins is maybe my most favorite historical site i have ever visited, Al-Zaytuna Mosque is pretty shit as well. make sure you look around the old town lots of sick shops and a real good vibe from all of the people.

i cant be fucked to write any more but also check out Sidi Bou Said, Olive Tree Mosque and Dar Hussein

>BA itself isn't much of a draw

I spent a few weeks in Argentina this year and I'd agree with this. For a big capital city, there's relatively little to do in BA and you can probably see most things of interest in a day or two.

Do a free walking tour, see the touristy sites like Eva Peron's grave, el caminito, the colon theatre, etc. BA is a pretty good city for restaurants and I had a great steak at a restaurant called Don Julio, although a resident of the city might be able to recommend somewhere better. The ferry over to Montevideo/Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay takes an hour or so and is a cool thing to do to.

Otherwise, go see the rest of the country. The winelands in Mendoza are awesome, and Patagonia is supposed to be fantastic (I didn't go there and still regret it)

I've been heavily flirting with the idea of taking off of school/dropping out to travel for an considerable period/indefinitely, but I figured I could use a second opinion from the experts at /trv/.

How viable is this? As in obtaining the visas and such? Also Ill only have around 1000 by the time school is over in May, so I've been considering looking for English teacher contracts in Asian countries and comparing the benefits of each in order to live a little there and earn several thousand while minimizing my spending.

Also, is taking off/dropping out of school a bad decision in the long run? The thought of being behind all my friends is a little scary, but I never really thought of myself of the college type. As long as I can remember I've always wanted true freedom, as idealist as it sounds.

I think you'll find opportunities in any field to be more abundant after graduating university. Most of the English teaching positions which pay well either require that you have a degree or favor degree-holders. Without having college under your belt, you'll largely be relegated to low salaries in relatively under-developed countries. From what I've heard second-hand, there's a greater chance that your employers will exploit you or pay under-the-table.

Unless you at least get a certificate such as a CELTA, you'll probably be working illegally and will have no legal recourse if your employer tries to short you or decides they don't want to pay for the services you've rendered.

I'm 23 and will graduate university in another year or two. Been to several dozen countries since 2013 and lived in India for a year and a half. While I saved a lot for my first several trips, I've been getting more and more work as a freelance writer, which makes traveling without a big bank account balance to start off with a lot easier. For instance, I was recently in India for four months. I only had $1200 (enough for a comfortable month or two rough months), but kept myself happy by acting as an extra in Bollywood movies and commercials and picking up writing work.

I don't think $1k will be enough to travel indefinitely or really even start off without some experience, know-how, and the ability to earn remotely. You can definitely do it, but it won't be comfortable and you might not know what you're getting yourself into if you haven't lived that way before.
>>
>>1201260
Hey thanks for the advice. Sticking with college is likely but it's incredibly discouraging not knowing what you want to do and dreading the idea of being chained to a desk 9 to 5.

All I've desired since youth has been true freedom, one without worrying about money or being stuck in some wilderness indefinitely. As that isn't possible, I've thought about freelance work or careers granting (relatively) passive income. Would you have any recommendations in that realm and what are your thoughts on freelance writing?
>>
>>1201292

Frankly, my position is only a little more ideal than yours. I still have to complete my degree but have made traveling a priority while still in university. I worked and saved a lot to take my first several trips, up until I got into writing and became comfortable with earning while overseas.

Freelance writing is a decent way to make money, but it's not the easiest market to crack. I worked in logistics for several years and was fortunate to have been allowed a great deal of latitude by my employers. I had a reputation for taking care of sticky situations and being good with words - as a consequence, I was frequently assigned work designing recruitment advertisements, negotiating website design contracts, and dealing with minor legal problems. Other folks from different offices would occasionally stop by when they needed something written or had a corporate dispute they needed resolved by way of argument.

All of that, in addition to plenty of essay writing while younger, gave me enough material to make a portfolio complete with appealing writing samples. I also have several published music reviews in international magazines as well sponsored multi-page advertisements masquerading as articles (the sort of thing you see in National Geographic for photography equipment, except in a local publication).

Having that material behind me probably means I can crack certain markets easier than you might be able to, assuming that you don't have much published or ghostwritten work.

There's actually a decent amount of money in writing, but you have to network, make connections, and be flexible with customer demands. While I don't earn hourly, I type fast enough that I average anywhere between $20 and $60 per hour, depending on what I'm doing (when I was younger, I wrote an MS thesis for a student in Hungary and earned about $1k in two days).

I recently turned 18.

For my birthday, my godparents have offered to pay my travelling expenses for a 30-day trip all around europe. The way the ticket works is that I can travel on 15 days out of the 30 - so for example I might travel every other day, or stay somewhere for 2 days and then travel for 2 days, etc etc.

The map attached is slightly out of date, but its a pretty good rough guide of where the InterRail service runs.

1) Where are some places I should definitely try and visit/things I should do?

2) Any tips for my first time travelling completely solo?

Did inter railing a few years back. Pic related ish.
Fantastic experience.

If you want to see Scandinavia at all, start there.
It's also probably the most expensive region you could go with an inter rail ticket, so do it first and go south / east into cheaper areas to help with potential budgeting issues later on.

I'm from the UK, i'd say don't try travel around here on an inter rail pass. Great things to see, especially in rural areas, but beyond the typical London sites it's hidden a little outside of the reach of rail stations, or not supported by the ticket.

Germany / Austria were great.

Don't feel the need to plan everything. Book the first week, then work it out on the move. The ticket is incredibly flexible.

Check to see if the credit card you used to pay for it gives you some insurance in this situation (some do). Otherwise I'd just roll with the punches. Portuguese are the worst drivers in Europe, so I'm sure a rental car company there has seen everything.

And not really relevant -- the question is, what will the rental company ding you for...

OP, read fine print of contract, maybe get some idea of what a repair would cost, even if you don't do it you can stop them from gouging you.
