Me and the lads want to travel on motorbikes around Vietnam, however all of us has never rode a motorbike before.
Is Vietnam really as dangerous as people say?

No. You'll be fine so long as you aren't a moron, that goes for general travelling there as well as the driving. Feel free to ask anything, I lived there for a few years and went all over so can answer most of your questions probably.
>driving anything with two wheels in southeast asia
do you want to die OP?

>driving anything with four wheels in southeast asia
Do you want to die of old age in traffic anon?

It's a lot less dangerous than it looks, there's a logic to it when you're actually in the traffic. The main ways foreigners get hurt driving bikes in Vietnam are by doing stupid shit like racing, braking hard on gravel or braking hard while cornering in the wet. It sometimes has to do with local animals wandering around on the road, but it pretty much never has anything to do with the traffic.
Currently planning the same thing while I'm in Southeast Asia, going to give the Mae Hong Son loop a go in Thailand just to check I can hack it. I've ridden off-road regularly for years but I think i don't think riding a scooter comes down to technical ability. You can't control the people around you so assume everyone is going to try and kill you and don't be to over confident.
If you end up in hanoi its certain death, heck even without riding a bike you get almost killed 3 times a day

I've lived in Hanoi for years riding every day without dying, it's fine. It can be bad when it's raining and drains are clogged but otherwise it isn't so bad on a bike.
Obama was inconsiderate enough to visit back in May so all the roads were closed for an entire day, which coincided with pretty much the first really bad day of the rainy season. When everyone was finally allowed back on the roads is the most insane chaos I have ever seen in my life and a genuine nightmare, but barring something like that he'll be fine
