East Flanders because I live there.

As for South America, I started overanding north from Asunción on December 2nd of 2015. I was in the Santa Cruz department on the January 1st 2016.

I'm still in the very early stages of planning my next trips.

I'm planning on visiting Russia this summer with some friends. I will visit Moscow and St Petersburg and maybe do some hiking on the countryside.

My questions to anyone with Russian experience:
- How much Russian should I learn?
- Is it worth it to learn cyrillic for this short stay? (To read maps in the subway for example)

- As much as you can, but don't panic if you don't know any. (You will just be ripped off more.)
- Yes, learn Cyrillic at least. It's easy, and will save you time. Reading menus will be quicker, too.
eg. pizza vs пиццa, vodka vs вoдкa

Thank you.
>>

I was there this summer in the same two cities and I got by fine without knowing any Cyrillic.

Hey /trv/, myself and a buddy are going to Hong Kong for a week. I didn't see a HK thread in the catalog so I'm wondering what are some good shopping/eating/party places to check out?

> Booked hotel in Kowloon
> 31 year old males, both single.

Will be there in May then off to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam for 2 weeks afterwards.

They have a hotel so that's not an issue.

>good shopping/eating/party places
Shopping depends on what you want.
Technology can be found in Sham Shiu Po at Golden Arcade. Mong Kong Computer Centere is also good.
Fashion etc isn't especially cheap in HK but Causeway Bay has all that shit.

Party in Lan Kwai Fong on Friday/Saturday and Wan Chai on other days, Thursday/Sunday are the main days there.

You can eat anywhere, there are shitloads of places. You shouldn't have any trouble finding decent places to eat.
If in doubt, check Lonely Planet, they randomly picked a few decent places and have addresses, I'd have to go research shit on Google maps to find you addresses of the places I know.

Going to use this for the first time. Any tips? Horror stories? What should I expect?

Going to bump this because i just booked my first airbnb as well and im curious how it will turn out.

What i can offer is that my cousin rents out her manhattan apartment while she is away through airbnb all the time and thinks its wonderful - but thats from the host side of things.
>>
>>1191412
I always entertain the idea of renting out my apartment when travelling but then I remember just how much of a warehouse my flat is.
Do people just have so little belongings? Moving all this shit to my parents or friends back and forth would be a royal pain in the ass.

Get drunk. Begin with a gin and tonic and take it from there

You need benzos, ample water and an aisle seat over the wing. If you can afford better-than-coach then ask for The Good Shit ;)
>>
>>1200188
You need to fortify yourself mentally
You need to know that turbulence is common and no more than speed bumps in the air
You need to know that there are thousands of safety precautions in place
You need to know there are hundreds of people involved in your safety
You need to know that you're more likely to die going to the airport than actually flying in a plane

Find out as much as possible about your flight and safety stats. Just dont get caught up in the negative.

What if anon came across a small fortune of 500k united states dollars (USD)

What country would it go the farthest in where he could get the most out of his money?

Do you want safe or do you want it to go far?

If you want it to go the farthest look at south america or some African country.

If you want it to go a bit far but be "safer", you might want to check out some Asian country like South Korea or such.

>>
>>1200185
Thanks friend

I was thinking north Korea actually but I'm scared they'll either see a large white boy and shoot anon or take all his money, Africa could work as well but anon doesn't like the thought of niggers with guns, I would have to bite the bullet and go after warlords and Shit, rewarding but I don't feel like hiking in the planes of Africa with lions and shit, just to kill a few niggers

Shit feels like I'm I'm a movie now, if y'all hear about a new American defector In North Korea or hear about some crazy shit happing in Africa you'll know who it was ;)

I've been hearing how some people would skip a night of sleep so that they could sleep throughout a long flight, but all I can think is that it would aggravate the situation - especially if you have trouble sleeping on a plane.

How many of you have done this? Has it worked out to your favor?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1199947
Done it a couple of times but best done if you aren't responsible like when traveling with your parents, obviously you don't want to fall asleep in the airport and miss your flight. It's fairly effective and if you're lucky you can sleep through it completely
>>
>>1199947
sleeping pills and staying up m8. its [current year] after all
>>
I've done this with an 7 hr flight and 8 hr layover after.

Short story: I ended up not sleeping much on the flight, and crashing at Singapore airport. I found one of those sleeping chairs, and fell asleep on that. Missed my connecting flight, and had to pay $200 for another one.

22, trying to get into Summer course @ Cook St. culinary school. All i'll be taking is a bust there and my computer with around 2 weeks of clothes.
Checked out local shelters and junk. And some jump start homeless program sounds promising but idk if i would fit the bill.
I'm pretty sure churches/missions are the jumpstreet stopping point when i hit the city right?

So, my grandfather is paying for my university but I can't get into anywhere great, so I'm going to focus on the location. Where SHOULD a 21 year old be in the USA in 2017?

That's fucking retarded, pick a school based on what you would like to earn a living with. Location means jack shit these days, 4 years are going to fly by without you even noticing.
>>
>>1199756
That's naive, proximity to relevant industry can be extremely helpful for finding a good internship or career post-grad.

Boston area for example is great if you'll be entering any sort of STEM program, also there's a huge variety of schools to choose from
>>
>>1199700
A way to get by in life with shitty academic history is to 1) do the community/junior college until Associate's degrees is earned, then get into upper level education through the deals the State Universities have where they MUST accept all credit courses if you matriculated out of the community colleges. It's like an easy way to ensure you'll finish. Doing well in your Associates can help you get into something competitive at the upper level like physical therapy. Picking a state to go to school is silly. You stay close to family if you're not in fact trying to get into the Top 5 engineering so you catch a good grad school down the line (or whatever your career dream is).
2) You very heartily consider a vocational program of high demand. It might sound silly but an electrician (for example) might ensure your actual job happiness beyond beginning your life in 3-4 extra years and relying upon another human to pay your way. Just Google
'top 50 highest demand careers" in say "Florida" and don't knock the blue collar high job security sector if it interests you. You'll learn outside of doctors, and computer analysts, like 38/50 will be vocational 2yrs. If you think you are a poor work habits, not high IQ kind of guy, then settle for a while. You can always go back to school. All the time and money your grandfather invests in you (at 21-25) accounts for little if you quit early. Know thyself. You can grow up really fast when you enter a field where you are highly wanted.

I got diagnosed with pretty serous Pneumonia just 9 days before the start of a 37 day trip overseas.

I had no travel insurance because i was going to buy a new camera and bring that with me on the trip after new years when the sale started, but sadly i got ill the day before.

Literally thousands of dollars wasted, girlfriend quit her job and now has to find a new one and now have to spend my holidays at home taking IV antibiotics and getting blood tests every 2 days when I've been looking forwards to this for literally a whole year. Will be minimum 1 month recovery, but honestly, its over for me.

To be fair, at least i wasn't overseas when this happened, its serious enough that the doctors said if i was a bit older and not so fit and healthy i could die, but still.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and has any advice on what to do to keep yourself from going insane?

I know this doesn't help that much but everything does happen for a reason, only most of the time you realize it way later.

Keep strong and don't let that traveler spirit die.
>>
Yeah man, I've lost thousands too due to unforeseen circumstances related to travel.

Just save up, and travel some other time. This happens to a lot of people friend

And things could be a lot worse.
If you recover well, at least you have your health. I know it doesn't sound helpful, but think about it, it is.

And yes, as the other anon said, never let that traveler spirit die, you will travel again some other time

I have a business trip to Dallas coming up later in the month, and I'm there for for 5 days. I've never been on a business trip or to Texas, but I don't want to do standard touristy shit in my free time or get assassinated.
What would you recommend?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1199551
Stay out of Downtown Dallas. Place is crawling with hobos. Same goes for Southwest Dallas

If you wanna feel relatively safe, go to the northern parts of Dallas, such as Addisson, Plano, Carrollton, etc.

Each neighborhood has its own thing going on. Be sure to do look at what is going on around your area. You may come across a festival of some kind.

>Food:
If you like comfy French food, you can try La Madeline.

If pizza is more of your thing, there are more options for pizza than Domino's or Pizza Hut. My favorite is Picasso's.

For breakfast, I would recommend Waffle House if you haven't had it yet.

>Transport:
Unlike other parts of Texas, Uber and Lyft are still in operation in Dallas. Use them if you don't have access to a car.

Their public transport is also good. The DART is a metro that goes to other parts of the metroplex.
>>
As a Dallas native I recommend nothing. It's boring as shit. Go to Deep Ellum to see some shitty bands or head to the Bishop Arts District, there are some good restaurants there. Fuck off.
>>
>>1199551

if i was in dallas right now i'd be banging mexican women left and right

Hello.
I'm new to this board but I figured maybe some people can help me out. So I'm probably going to New York for the first time pretty soon here, and I've read on different sights where people say the place is a shit show and others say it's an amazing place. I would just like to get more opinions on it? Any input is appreciated.

It's very cool, but you need to stay away from tourist traps.

Times Square and rockefeller center is trash. Broadway sucks you can get better theater for cheaper.
Go to:
>the met opera
>Upper West side west 72nd area
>Soho to people watch
>Sylvia's in Harlem is a classic
>Williamsburg is overrated but has good beer. I don't care if it's hipster. Hipsters make good food and beer.
>smalls jazz club in Greenwich Village
>mcsorleys pub on 7th Street
>go to lower Manhattan and see the bull and wall street
>the met, cloisters, frick collection, and Brooklyn museum are all worth seeing

Try to avoid midtown as much as possible
>>
>>1199547
I'm a New Yorker and went to the McSorley's bar for the first time on Sunday, it was pretty cool. A good place to start the night off.
>>
>>1199547
Oh and Williamsburg to me isn't necessarily that hipster, it just seems like a place all kinds of people go to hang out kind of like the East Village or LES.

I mean yes Williamsburg was once upon a time the hipster center, but it seems like that's Bushwick these days as Williamsburg has gotten super expensive.

Hey /trv/, first time poster here. /adv/ couldn't help me so I thought this board would be better suited to my inquiry.

I'm a student from the United Kingdom who was arrested and charged with a fine and a mark on my criminal record for theft at the age of 18 - I'm 24 now. I am finishing my studies in 2018 and am hoping to get a working visa in Arizona. Considering I have not been arrested/convicted of any other crimes since then, will I face problems on achieving said visa? I will be living with my girlfriend, if that helps.
