I've finally got some money to spare. Last time I was abroad alone was about 13 years ago. So I'm thinking I might travel a bit this summer. I live in Sweden. I think I will do a simple trip, something cheap, just a few days. I'm thinking perhaps a budget airline to some Eastern European city and a cheap hotel or hostel. Or maybe I'll do something totally different. Any ideas?

Hi /trv/
I'm planning to go to Taiwan this summer. How much is there to do outside of Taipei? I want to travel south but I don't know if it's worth it. Are there any more interesting cities? I also love mountain hinking, so what are the best areas to go to? Any other information about Taiwan is also very welcome, since I don't know much about the country yet. Thanks!

The whole country is worth exploring, and the beauty of Taiwan is that you can get a good handle of it all one trip.

北插天山 is my favorite place to hike in Taiwan.
>>
>>1221438

The north has Jiufen, the oceanside town that Spirted Away was based on. For sights, Taipei has 101, Elephant Mountain, Taiwan Democracy Memorial Park, and Tamshui. For art, it has Huashan 1914 Creative Park, Songshan Creative Park, Treasure Hill, & MajiMaji. If you like Myanmarian food, go to Huaxin rd aka "Little Myanmar". Night Marketwise, Raohe & Linjiang have tons of good food.

The east coast is a nature lovers paradise, you have Yilan / Hualien / Taidong. Yilan I've yet to go to, but have heard the scenery's good, and it has the Kavalan Whiskey distillery. Hualien has the Taroko Gorge nearby. Taidong can take you to some of the outer islands, Green Island & Orchid Island.

Down south, you have Tainan, Kenting, and Kaohsiung.

Tainan is the old capital, and now the food center of Taiwan. If you like history, go to Anping or Chikan Tower. For art, go to Qimei Museum, The Cultural Center or Xinmei rd. For eating as much good food as you can, just walk around Guohua rd / Youai rd, or go to Huayuan night market. You can also get to Penghu Island from Anping.

Kaohsiung is a lot like Tainan, but with more western influence. Here you can find good European / American food. As for places to see, go to Pier 2, LDR, Xiziwan, Lotus Pond, Fo Guang Shan Temple, Monkey Mountain, Rueifang night market, Cijian Island, Xiaoliuqiu.

Kenting is where everybody goes to the beach.

As for the west, you have Alishan National Park for an ancient forest. Ershui / Jiji for cycling in rice paddies / mountains. Yuanlin for a good small town experience. Taichung for Indian food and Luce Chapel. Miaoli for Tea Sage Hut.

Lmk what you're in to and I can give you more specific suggestions

Planning to travel to Rio for 4 days on the last week of June. Anyone that's been there could please tell me if I'm missing something important? So far I have the following:
-Corcovado and Christ Redeemer
-Santa Teresa
-Sugar Loaf mountain and cable car
-Tijuca forest
-Pedra do Telegrafo (for the cheeky picture)
-Beaches (Ipanema, Copacabana, Prainha, Leblon)

Currently have this itinerary I want to book with an online tour company:
Day 1: Sugar loaf + corcovado + tijuca
Day 2: Pedra Telegrafo + beaches

Need to fill 1 or 2 more days. Ideas I have are: Botanic Garden, Sailing route through the bay, and either or Hang Gliding / Paragliding / Parasailing.
I'm not really into futbol and beer, and the favelas don't seem like an attraction to me.

Jardim Botanico is good
honestly i spend 5 weeks in Rio and mostly i just hung out with people and tried to improve my Portuguese wasn't really trying to be touristy
>>
>>1221377
Pedra da Gávea if u're into long trails

Copacabana = plebs
Ipanema = hot rich sexy actresses

Also, go party in Lapa if you are a degenerate young person. It's pretty cool, seriously

There's a guy from Cape Town who posts here so wait for him to give you info. It's an old city but has lots of tourists. Pubs, discos, restaurants. Wineries within driving range. Robben Island,District 6 museum, beaches. However there are beggars and crime is a problem. The bulk of the people live in the Cape Flats and you do not want to go there. Public transit is crappy but there is the My Citi BRTs and Metrorail. Get the Lonely Planet guide to Cape Town for more info.

This may come off as an odd question, and I apologize if it's been done a million times. I went a few pages deep and didn't find much in the way of talk on a similar subject.

I have a friend from Russia. He and I met on chat roulette and have spoken somewhat regularly for.. going on 3 years now via skype Our "relationship" is simply one of discussing differences/similarities in culture/language and sometimes we play video games together (His initial interest was merely practicing his English with a native speaker but it turned out despite everything we had quite a bit in common and have stayed in touch)

Anyway, he has talked about visiting the states. In fact he claims it is his dream to do so. Not really to stay but just to see and experience it for himself, visit and return home to Moscow.

I've done research on the subject, and it seems to me that the only barrier is perhaps a cash investment in the application process for a passports and a B-2 Tourist visa.

Note, as just stated I'm not talking for green card/permanent visas.

Despite my findings (which were from official sources; consulate websites etc) he insists his only chance is through the green card lottery.

He insists I am wrong, and I couldn't really know because.. well, being born in America, have never had to file for these types of things simply to visit.

I am curious to hear from someone with recent travel experience (I've never left the states) if either of us are in the right here? Or are we both off to some degree?

Ignoring the possibility that he's KGB on an internet mission to build sympathy for Russians, yet still taking into account tense relations and the general climate between our respective home lands.. Is it feasible for Ivan to come visit the states?

Oh, and for the record I'm not completely daft, I would not send someone I've only met on the internet cash, so no need for warnings about that.

You're socially autistic but remind me of myself

Yeah tourists can come from Russia as long as Russia has no problem with him leaving

I was talking to a Chinese girl who traveled over here so I'm sure if chinks can make it over so can commies (the Russian kind)
>>
>>1220726

Thanks for the input, I had thought he was being a tad dramatic about how hard it might be; I think the big issue is the the equivalent of a couple hundred USD it wold cost, what with the conversion rate of USD to Ruble being something like 1R:<$0.02
As for the autistic remark; I expected that on /b/ or /pol/ but as a first time poster here it came as a surprise, but frankly you're quite likely right about that
>>
>>1220727
Dude, I'm just shitposting, I grew up on /b/ and trolling /r9k/ and when /b/ went to shit I went to [s4s]. I'm basically just a retarded asshole.

That being said you just remind me of when I first started making posts, I thought it was kinda funny. Wait for some other guy who knows more to actually respond to you but I'm pretty damn sure it's fine, on the US customs side he's completely wrong unless there's like a Russian ban or something shit I don't know about.

He's probably just nervous about making the jump if he's younger, if you're a girl, or if you're younger and he's older. Or he's just nervous anyway.

Good luck to you.

Hi, /trv/,

Im graduating from college this summer and as I will be working a corporate job I need a new suit.

coincidentally I also book plan tickets for a 2 weeks trip in vietnam and I realized that you can get tailor made suit for dirt cheap there and if I can make this work out, I will be saving a lot of money.

Had anybody here ever intented to get something which was way cheaper in asia?
Any tip to avoid getting rip-offed?
Is there any way I could get decent info on the topic?

>>
I got to Hanoi with this intention and found out that reports of tailor-made stuff being cheap were greatly exaggerated. Decided to just get a few pre-made bits and bobs. Fucking beautiful dresses for women at good prices, if you've got a lassie with you.
If you have a corporate job, surely you can afford a suit.
>>
>>1220398
I'm glad somebody brought this up because that was one of the strangest experiences I've had.

I'm 25, I work in constructionion, the only time I ever worst suit was to a friend's wedding as a groomsman and that was specifically tailored to meet their weeding specs.

I visited SEA and I must have gotten over a dozen offers for a tailored suit. Why? is it common for people to wear suits in some places? to my knowledge even the more "professional" jobs do business cas. half the time somebody offered to make a suit for me it was the damn taxi driver, if I'm trying to be at a certain place at a certain time what the fuck makes you think I want to stop halfway there and look through a suit shop? That's insane.
>>
I bought a suit in Thailand for like $200 AUD, tailor made, shit was so cash. Looked great, lasted, had my name embroidered in it, got to choose from hundreds of materials, even interior color. 10/10 would recommend. I'm not big on hagling but have been told you can grind them down to like $100.

If you're in sales for Credico marketing or some shit and only making like $16 an hour but have to wear a suit, this is the way to go. It'll still be better quality than anything you get from h&m or banana Republic etc. Realistically they probably send away for them for like $50 usd to make so $200 is fair to pay. Buy in bulk and I'll imagine you can get 3 for 500.

Neither. Go to Piran.

Venetian architecture, the best food of any of the three, the best land (and) seascape, and just generally an immensity of charm and beauty.

Don't go to Portoroz. It's a concrete shithole.

Cool places in Montreal for a 23 yr old kid and his gf to see? Looking for activities that aren't usually listed in a travel guide.

>>

Mount Royal is a good place even if it's probably in the travel guide. You can easily reach there with a bus from the metro station.

Montreal has a few ''escape the room'' activities which you can easily reach from downtown, if you and your gf are into that.

If you can be more specific in what you are looking for, I could help better. Will you have a car or are you travelling only by bus/metro?
>>
She's 20 so traveling to Canada is essentially her 21st bday in advance. Any cool bars?... we are going sunday to wednesday so unfortunately night clubs won't be an option... ill be driving so even a day trip type excursion could work.. plus I'm a foodie so if you have any restaurantsuggestions worth going to I'm all ears!!
>>
>>1217512
Forget the nightclubs indeed but ''Les 3 brasseurs'' could be a good place to go. It's comfy, booze is good and food is too. Just go to Centropolis on the north shore of Montreal and you'll find this one and other bars/restaurants too. It's right next to the major highway.

For very delicious food, I could eat at Schwartz everyday, but that's just me. Big plate of smoked meat and cherry coke is my favorite. Parking can be difficult there thought.

If you are into poutine, do not get fooled by any kind of restaurant that serves them. The very bests are usually from very small local pizzerias/restaurants.

I'd definitely suggest if you are into a road trip to go up north of Montreal. 50km up north and you're into Laurentian mountains which is much much better looking than Montreal. There is about 250 km one-way of nice and comfy road.

Let me know your thoughts, I will follow up on this thread

>be me, embark on eurotrip for work/vacation
>a lot of the places I want to go to /trv/ claims are ugly and overrun with crime (Florence, Berlin, Paris, London, Prague)
>never feel threatened at all during the entire trip thus far
>get to final leg (paris/london/Amsterdam)

>go out to find some food
>walking around, a group of Africans approach me, shouting in French, try to take my jacket
>eventually they just fuck off after several seconds of me ignoring them

Just have a mean look on your face (get inspired by anyone in the metro during peak hours), and stay away from shoddy looking guys (read arabs, blacks, eastern european in sweatpants/streetwear), especially those in packs.

Keep your head up, don't cross looks and there you go.

For your gear, it's better if you keep it in a somewhat discreet backpack, no obvious camera bag or anything.

But that's very much overkill. In Paris downtown, 99% of the time, it's fine. Worse you will get is some drunken/high dudes trying to scare you a bit and you can shake it off pretty easily.

A very convenient thing to do while I was taking night pics there is to use these velib (rent-a-bike), so you can fuck off quickly if you feel uncomfortable.

Have any amerifats done the direct flights to cuba? Is it worth visiting or is it better to go to DR?
