When I read through the new Unknown Armies gammas from the kickstarter, I was floored by how simple and smart the Identities system was. It compresses the whole idea of do it yourself skills into something that takes two seconds to figure out but helps you explore your character better and is both open ended yet just restrictive enough.

That depends. As a designer, I like do it yourself guidelines. In my head canon, it allows players to create whatever they want, and thus put control back in their hand. Also it's less work in the creation process, even if it does have to be tested more rigorously. Like that game where Mortal Kombat decided to let players create their own fatalities.

But as a player, I can't be assed, and apparently neither can anyone else, considering the "Kreate a Fatality" was widely panned as lazy, uninspired, and completely out of sync with the rest of the game. When I need gear, I just want to look something up, pay the price and be done with it. If I need something slightly different, me and the DM can hash it out.

Moral of the story: Don't try to push design work off on the players. It just makes people confused and indifferent.

With our spirits roused by the thought of friendly semi-violent competition, me and Charlotte march over to the line for the bumper cars. There seems to be a pretty mixed crowd today, with people from just about every age group outside babies and super old folks.

But of course, my focus is on Charlotte.

"I hope you can handle some roughness," Charlotte laughs. "Because you're going to be my -sole- target the entire time we're in there."
"Fair enough," I reply. "And I've only got eyes for you."

Oh my God why did I say that now people are staring.

"Ehehe..." Charlotte smiles. "Care to make a wager?" she asks.
"On what?" I reply.
"Er-"

Hahaha, now she looks completely lost as what to say.

Generally if it's a small group, most people I've been with don't really mind the age of a character. We had an 8 year old who had a gimmick that when they cried they healed people. It was a story intensive pathfinder game most of the time, though as time went on and the group grew larger and larger, with more DMs, they eventually told the guy to make the character older because it was creepy despite none of those connotations ever coming up.

Some people just don't like children when they're trying to write Zack Snyder tier DARK AND NEVER BEFORE SEEN shit I guess.

Right. They're clearly not planning on being very talkative, so you might as well just read the files you asked for. A quick skim of each later, and you've found out the following:

The pale man with lank black hair is Damien Jones. Who, because of course that's the sort of person you want to work with, goes by 'Davey'. Still, at least if the file's accurate he's got some experience with field medicine.

The next file is for Kira Martel, a short redhead with her hair clipped close. She's a practiced spelunker and familiar with all manner of hazards natural and artificial.

The last member of your team is Alexi Varanov. Unlike the others - Kira is British and Damien Australian - he's native to here. His picture doesn't exactly reassure you that he's not being sent down by the gangsters you're working with to keep an eye on you; tattoos cover his arms, and he's holding some kind of huge machinegun.

The Navigators

so throughout lore and canon it states that the navigators are a necessary evil in the imperium and that the emperor having no other means to travel has to suck it up and use them but secretly hates them just like everyone else in the imperium

as we all know by now he gets 70% through conquering the galaxy and then goes back to Terra and begins working on the construction of his "human webway" project then a few years later Magnus fucks it up by accident

turns out that some of the navigator houses had heard rumours about this kind of thing and were actively working to sabatoge the project (plot point in the story)

the reasoning being that if the Emperor no longer needed Navigators he could have just killed them all, which he was planning on doing the first chance he got because they have so much power in the imperium
it also goes into detail about the navigators are being used by both sides and are the only ones other then ships that forces wont outright destroy and that gives them a kind of arrogant invulnerabilty. this is touched upon in other books about the creation of the Pariah assassins and the whole navigator house kicking up a massive shit fest and threatening to strike (which would fuck the crusade up)

hence why the emperor went to all the trouble to make it super secret, he was keeping it not from his sons but from the navigators, (hence why he explained to Magnus in Thousand sons) although he never tells horus (but then he probably didn't see the point in burdening horus with something that big

Emperor: Hey Horus i know you got a galactic crusade to run and co ordinate so i am just going to go build a webway portal using Ancient Alien technology so we no longer need navigators. yeah you can't tell them though because if they find out they will launch a civil war and that would be bad, so keep it super secret. also don't judge me for using alien tech...

So scheming / plotting / etc. doesn't help, only raw power. The kind of power that could find and kill someone even if they've had decades to hide, with perfect knowledge of where you'd look and in what order.
