How do you guys prefer to word your character bios for GMs you dont know?
Do you give something in prose form or just give a plain no nonsense description?
>>47046083
I work the background in prose.
I'm the kind of guy who gets asked for a paragraph of information and end up writing a five page epic retelling.
Then I give a no nonsense bio of appearance and personality and major character points.
What are some motivations for a Lich to do what he or she does beyond just power or immortality?
Knowledge for the sake of knowledge, usually. But that takes time... so much time... and human lives are so short.
>>47041149
>beyond just power or immortality
Not "just" power or immortality. Supreme Power and... and fucking IMMORTALITY!
>>47041149
Fear
So this has been out for a while now. What are your experiences with it? Have you found anyone to play with? Any interesting stories? Major gripes/selling points?
I decided to check it out because I was told that it does D&D better than D&D and I have to say, I quite enjoy it. Everything is simple and fairly elegantly designed and I really like that it doesn't mechanically discourage characters that are non-traditional and kind of all over the place.
What say you, /tg/?
Maybe I'm just a sucker for tables
>>47039375
It's great. Really enjoy playing it with my group. My major gripe is that some of the editing is a bit poor. Not as bad as Shadowrun 5e, or some of the FFG 40K games, but it's a little thing that bugs me.
I will say I have at least one complaint about the game:
You don't have skills, just professions. You pick a couple when you make your character and get a few more over the course of the game. These represent areas you have a background in and are divided into categories like academic, religious, martial, etc. Basically, whenever you are called to do or know something and that something is related to one of your professions, you get some boons on the roll or maybe just automatically succeed. It's all left up to the GMs discretion. It seems really hand-waved in a game where everything else is well designed. SotDL isn't really rules light, just simple, well designed rules, but this feels like something out of one of those free form narrative focused "games."

>>47038075
I don't know who that is, but at a guess I'd say a low level elf fighter/rogue with very good dexterity, which would explain the choice of sword, the lack of armor, and the fact that she's apparently acrobatic enough to strike a pose in midair.
>>47038211
Perhaps she's proportionate to the backdrop, and is in fact huge?
>>47039189
I hope she falls and breaks her neck.

By Exalted's definition, yeah.
Anyone else watching ExalTwitch here?
It's an incredibly fascinating campaign to watch, especially because I don't have a 3rd edition group of my own.
Last week they had like a dozen devs and writers in the chat with them.

Maw-krusha is CUTE!
>Tiny-minded and short-sighted, the thuggish Maw-krushas barrel across the landscape pulverising anything in their way, be it trees, settlements or screaming people. Their bellow is loud enough to rupture organs, pop eyeballs and pulverise bones. They are even capable of a semblance of flight with their stubby wings, though it has been suggested that this is more the result of gravity not wanting to mess with them. Most creatures have the good sense to steer well clear of Maw-krushas, but not the Ironjawz. At first, Maw-krushas were a chance for brave Ironjawz to prove their mettle – often with fatal results. Then, some Megabosses managed to ‘tame’ a Maw-krusha, either by yelling right back into their face or clambering up on their back where they couldn’t reach them and battering them about the head until they submitted. Maw-krushas never truly accept their riders and need constant reminding of who is in charge. Fortunately, the monsters enjoy smashing stuff just as much as Ironjawz do, and can be distracted by a good fight.

Samson, more resolute than before, is pleased to hear back through the little network he's built up in the prison with Edwyg's help and years of connections. He's going to return home, he tells himself, and every inch of his body is telling him the way back is gonna be bloody as all hell.
Mere weeks ago, he would've recoiled at this fact, but now... His mother's corpse is a soulless soldier for the empire, and his friend and inspiration met the same fate long ago. He needs to take in their spirits, passion, allow Raleigh and Marion to live on past themselves, and he knows both of them would do this.
Dyrus, crossing the desert, is having a slightly worse time, but not necessarily a BAD one. They stocked up plenty supplieswise, but they've still needed to dodge Gerxel-run cities and oases as they attempt to reach the shrinking Vautou territories, which means frugality in the desert.
"Here we are in Hawk Oasis," Denim says, finally, the first of the Gerxel-run cities in the Desert they've been able to venture into. "It was only recently recaptured from the Vautou by Lady Rene, Cato, and myself, so not many settlers are here, and I've been able to make sure it's staffed only with Imperial agents I trust. I've been planning on making a run for Chief Paisley for some time, if I may be honest."
Speaking of Rene, she's the same as ever. She's been in Garou Valley with Director Chiffon and his assistant Cashmere for some time now, and still they've yet to encounter any Tarvosian Nomads. Currently, they rest in the village of Ahua, a vibrant Wolfskin community. Many human-distrusting eyes are on them, though Saye, Chiffon, and Cashmere have vouched for the Imperial gang.
Rene's not thinking much about all that, though. Honestly, she's just concerned about Veiz. Ever since she started studying with Methodius, she's seemed... Distant, even after it was determined that the sisters needed to support one another.

Never played D&D but this makes me really want to try. What do D&D players think of this? Is thiks something you think they should pursue? I think it'd be cool if they had some of Magic's "classes" in there, like Roilmages who summon Awakened elementals and stone-forging Lithomancers. Seeing characters and artifacts and stuff converted seems like it'd be really cool too.
>>47045712
As someone who plays both D&D and MTG, I'm rather intrigued. For other D&D players, I'd imagine it's just a bit of a novelty, just like any other setting supplement with a few extra rules.
It's a neat idea, but I don't think they should go too far with it. Some of the things you mentioned, like including Roilmages or Lithomancers, can often be accomplished under the current rules.
A Wizard with Mending, Mold Earth, and Earth Tremor is already a great representation of any sort of stone-mage for example. Throw in a couple other refluffed spells like using Shield as an earthen barrier and it could work easily.
It gives a good baseline to work off of though, and it's really gotten me thinking about things I could use to make an MTG campaign.
M:tG's worldbuilding is sweet and cool, and its art is amazing. I've always wanted WotC to do stuff like this, and I'm glad they're doing it now.
However, my local gaming community isn't likely to use this because we do not play 5e.
>>47045916
I imagined Lithomancers being a kind of sword and sorcery class that could use both magic and melee, though I'm sure that's also doable within the current rules since I'm sure they encompass a lot. I don't mind the idea of just repurposing existing pieces into amalgams for a new class though, I think that's kind of what they were going for reading the PDF anyway. But I'm not sure if it's that how D&D "works".

Bumping thread and also asking for advice.
So I've been thinking about how ACKs is conceptually organized, and I've been thinking of emulating something similar but on a bit smaller of a scale and more focused towards adventuring.
So for instance, the new table goes;
>Missions (Doing dirty work for people for pay)
>Wilderness (exploring wild places, hexcrawls)
>Dungeons (Dangerous, but high treasures)
>Politics (You're still fighters and wizards, but dealing with larger scale political threats or challenges; like raiding a palace of an enemy king or working as elite forces in an army or something)
>Expeditions (Go off to unexplored lands off the continent, here there be monsters)
I've never liked the assumptions that when the PCs get super high level they would become Kings, why not just become even more crazy powerful adventurers?
Hey, what are some good books on the "thought" of old school games, besides the "Quick Primer for Old School Gaming?"
I need to get the wheels turning and get back in the groove of old school RPGs (which I haven't played in a decade and a half) so I can start designing a game that I want to run for some friends starting in a month or so.
How would magic be handled in real life? Would it even be legal to use it?
>>47037674
Depends on themagic.
>>47037687Lexomancer?
It would be treated like any other natural or scientific force because reasons, and only people with high IQs who go to magic college would know it.
Everyone else would go "Hey man I could learn magic if I wanted to" then go back to watching youtube videos of cats jumping in boxes.

Warlock Edition
Shout out to the one class that you don't have to wait until level 10 to really enjoy.
I have a bunch of high-level builds that I want to play just for fun. Where do I find games where I can just do dungeon crawls without committing to a campaign?
>>47036591
AL groups do one shot expeditions. They are pretty fun all and all.
Ordered the set of books on weekend and going through the PDF versions in the mean while.
It's weird going from Player's Handbook to Dungeon Master's Guide. 3.5 had all of the books be pretty uniform in appearance, but here they dropped the "parchment styled" yellow pages when moving from one to next, and Monster Manual also has mostly regular, white pages with light texture. Not that I'm complaining, the yellow pages were kinda weird.
But what's the reason for the change? Did the styling get a bad reception?
