Whatever happened to classic fantasy? Nobody wants to play humans, elves, dwarves, and halflings any more... they want to play characters straight from Deviant Art, like this...
>angelic choir singer of light, kitsune illusionist and foxfire pyromancer, dullahan gunslinger and spirit speaker, and graceful kirin doctor and swashbuckler working together to beat down the misguided fool trying to end the concept of nighttime and then make friends with the former villain over tea and cookies.
We all like classic fantasy races because they've got a strong legacy behind them, inspired by mythology... They make underdog heroes who beat impossible odds... fighting monsters and killing threats no man should reasonably be able to kill.
The classic races aren't defined by cheap gimmicks or WHAT they are... they're defined by WHO they are. They make believable, relatable characters we can all understand. We need relatable heroes we can cheer for in high fantasy... not demons. Not angels. Not spirits. Not fairies. Not kitsune...
In my experience, the ones who play things like kitsune and angels are always WORSE roleplayers than the ones who play dwarves and elves.
I've found that if you limit people to playing classic fantasy races, they'll think about their characters more and roleplay better... because restriction breeds creativity. When I DM, I restrict races to classic fantasy races, and even the bad players suddenly roleplay better.
Classic fantasy needs to be appreciated more... get back to the roots of it all, with humans, elves, dwarves, and halflings. Anyone else agree?

It's almost like players are partaking in some kind of fantasy...
A fantasy in which they believe and play in Outlandish and fanciful things...
And though it isn't mature or well developed, they're having fun with their rpg...
Maybe you're also a faggot.... :^|
>>46995835
>The classic races aren't defined by cheap gimmicks or WHAT they are...
They kinda are. I mean, when you think dwarf, you think stubborn strongman wielding a hammer or axe, not a middle-aged glassblower and father of three trying to come to terms with his eldest departing for a magic school, taking out the stress this causes on the party mascot and earning the admonishment of his friends.

Would you consider all the money you've spent on tabletop stuff to be a waste, or an investment?
Do you have any idea how much money it has been?
Investment. Buy a few RPGs and some board games, then you have entertainment for years.
The space it all takes up bothers me more than money spent. Not to mention the constant fear of fire/burglary.

I guess I should actually include that layer if I'm asking for feedback.
So from what I understand, the idea behind the cosmic horror genre is that there are godlike beings in the universe, its just that they don't particularly care about and can easily destroy you and everything you care about by accident and/or without meaning to. Much akin to you walking through a field and stepping on ants or anthills without noticing.
However if we stay with this analogy doesn't that mean that, just as there are humans out there who absolutly love ants, who are obsessed with learning about and observing ants and their ways, who care more about animals and their welfare than that of fellow humans. Then surely there is also the possibility of great Cthulhu-esque creatures out there who love us, are deeply interested in every little thing we do and even take pains to protect us from harm.
I was watching Epic Name Bro's playthrough of Bloodborne in which one encounter's one or two eldritch entities who act in a benevolent manner towards you, and so that got my mind on to this subject and made me want to discuss with someone. Maybe also do some world building of a society that plays host to the Cthulhu version of Jane Goodall. Or maybe some characters that come into contact by ditto.
Is anyone interested in this?
What if the benevolent eldritch entity only comes into contact with them every once in a while? After all, while there are humans that love ants and try to tend to them, they still have lives to lead and errands to run. A great boon is given to the world, but only every 237 years, as the eldritch being passes by like a comet.

Illusions edition.
DMs, how have you tricked your players with illusions? Players, how have you done the reverse?
Players are usually overly cautious with illusions. The most extreme use I've seen was giving the impression that their camp had a lot more tents and activity than the three dinky tents it had.
The biggest illusion I've used was giving the impression an old temple's entrance was bricked. Someone decided to investigate the wall and noticed that vines were going through the wall though.
Expanded familiars! In the sense of making familiars do more and be more useful, rather than simply adding more creatures that can be familiars.
What does /5eg/ think? As a quick aside, this is intended for use in a current campaign wherein the DM has ruled that *everyone* has access to the Ritual Caster feat for free, and therefore our entire party has familiars regardless of class. Ergo within the context of that campaign it equally powers up everyone, rather than simply giving those with access to Find Familiar more spell slots.
The primary reason for writing this up is that, becuause everyone in the group has a familiar, I kind of wanted to see if we could have a side-session where our familiars all get up to some kind of sidequest on their own. But by default familiars, particularly ones like bats or frogs, are just so frail and useless as to make that a dangerous proposition. Thus, this.
Hello, rules question.
One of my players crafted a telescope that allows them to see into the ethereal plane (the PCs found a telescope that did the same in a dungeon, and the character copied the design for that). Since ethereal creatures can see through walls and such I've been letting him do that with the telescope too.
Is this OP? Should I have a ghost kill his character and break the scope? I'm worried.
What would you do, /tg/?

So what are you current impressions ? I think it's cool that you get so many weapon options (didn't expect the Mace of Absolution in a vidya) but I'm worried about the enemy variety: genestealers, hybrids and one boss ? I hope they add Orks as well.
>>46979199
The game isn't even out and you're already complaining about the enemy variety?
That said, dropping out of Uni and getting a jerb to buy a new PC for this.
>>46979226
Complaining would be if I said it's shit because there's not enough enemies. I'm worried that they didn't show many and the table top Space Hulk isn't know for it's enemy variety, hence I hope they will add more.

>Face the BBEG
>BBEG is responsible for killing thousands of people, including everyone the PCs ever loved
>Finally defeat the BBEG
>BBEG's on the ground, cackling that he will soon destroy the world
>This isn't a boast. He's actually going to destroy the world with a spell he cast
>The only way to stop him is to kill him
>As you do, at least one person goes "HERP DERP! IF YOU KILL HIM, YOU'LL BE JUST LIKE HIM!"
>>46999429
>NOT IF I KILL BOTH OF US!
But yeah, if both of you are dead, you'd get a high chance of getting martyr'd.
Also this is suicide bomber logic, which is still suicidally idiotic.
Another option would be to get that person who said HERP DERP IF YOU KILL HIM, YOU'LL BE JUST LIKE HIM to just end the BBEG himself, then. Or hell, an already-evil party member to kill the BBEG. If no evil party member is nearby, then recruit the BBEG to kill himself.
>>46999429
>ITT: things that never happened, cranky about alignments edition.
We get it someone in your party made a stink about ham-fisted D&D morality, and you made a thread to try to get people to take your side by resorting to hyperbole.
Yes, sticking to principle isn't the smart or convenient thing to do, that's why it's worth something, but no, that situation isn't the right one to take the moral high ground.
in b4 hurhur, he never said it was D&D!
Well of course he didn't, in a situation with a morning cartoon evil villain and someone making a fuss over morals he didn't have to.
>>46999793
what
What systems do you enjoy, but would get you some flak for liking?
I've been liking D&D 4e a lot. The light out-of-combat rules gives me a lot of freedom and the abstract combat system has been really fun for the players.
>>46995099
'abstract' combat system?
>>46995128
I guess game-y would be a better word for it. I'm still kinda new to this whole DMing thing but DMing 4e has been a blast compared to 3.5 because of the fun combat system.
>>46995143
It's always nice when people aren't permanently tainted by 3.5. 4e still has its problems, but it's definitely better to see people play that over 3.x

>mermaid: "Why would I come ashore? I like having a tail, its pretty boss. You should come into the water"
>Duke: "but I'll lose my kingdom if I go into the water"

>mermaid proceeds to be a promiscuous bitch as per every female in The Witcher
