An apathetic universe filled with entities so far above us that they are incomprehensible... But noblebright.

Easiest way would be to introduce the closest thing to a "good guy" old one. To stay consistent with the theme, though, they wouldn't be so much be "good" but "on our side" the same way a kid that owns an ant farm is on the ants' side. For one reason or another, we gained the interest of a fairly benevolent entity, a less assholish Nyarlathotep essentially, rooting for us against the more destructive beings.

At the end of the day, we're still insignificant specks in the infinite cosmos, and there are still risks when dealing with our patron, but at least we've got something going for us.

Swashbucklers are a good concept hampered pretty awfully by a) being stuck with a shitty fighting style, b) having to use panache for just about everything they do, and c) being ridiculously swift action dependant.

In my experience, people who think swash is strong or OP don't realize C and don't have a good base of reference for A.

You've transferred your flag to a Dominion Fast Battleship while searching the outer edges of the DRH 1 relay, looking for potential activity in and near zones safe from the nav hazards. A half dozen attack cruisers are with you to provide support and ECM.

So far you've met with smugglers familiar with the region from whom you acquired some sensor data.

You also encountered an enemy Frigate that had been docked with the forward hull of a scout ship your forces had assigned to the region. Their crew were using the scout's coms arrays to fake reports to your allies showing little enemy activity in the area. There is clear evidence that isn't the case.

A modified Atlas class transport was detected heading into the hazard zone. Long range scans have also detected unusual activity. These could be forces belonging to a newly forced House the Smugglers spotted.

While tempted to follow the transport in your sensors are not configured to watch for subspace instabilities that could lead to your potential doom.

You've also considered intentionally damaging subspace in the region to hinder enemy plans, or divert them to locations where you can better intercept them there would be consequences. The Navigators Guild is only holding to their salvage agreement with you for fear you'll do something far more dangerous if they refuse. If you were to actively start damaging subspace and they eventually found out it could jeopardize your business plans.

The best option seems to be to lay a trap for some of the enemy ships outside the hazard zone since you know they emerge from it somewhere.

Where did you want to lay a trap? 1, 2, 3 or 4?

You have first hand proof that ships pass through point 1, and the com signal being sent out by the Frigate you captured was directed at 3.

One big, really sexy hook that Star Wars doesn't have.

You can't, mate. Star Wars is pretty deeply embedded into the psyche of most nerds, in popular consciousness as a whole.

But if you insist on trying I'd suggest going back to the source, the old pulp books, comic strips and film serials and try to draw from that without cribbing from Star Wars.

Stuff like Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Barsoom. Hell, jump forward into the fifties and sixties and grab some Poul Anderson and Michael Moorcock, Barbarella, stuff like that.

And remember that the thing that makes people love Star Wars even more than any other sci-fi thing out there is the fact its a fairy story/fantasy at the end of the day. So look at Lord Dunsany, Tolkien, Robert Howard, Fritz Lieber, the Wizard of Oz.

Draw from a lot of places and try and synchronize it. Lucas' great success was taking pulp sci-fi and marrying it to the conventions of high fantasy. The orphaned farm boy discovering a magic legacy, the ancient wizard that teaches him, the dark knight and the cruel wizard he serves, the princess in the tower. Imagery we can identify with and latch onto as familiar, even if its been covered in sci-fi trappings.

Your efforts are doomed before you've even started, but good luck.

Imagine the Aztecs' Flower Wars, but at a stellar scale, then have the combatants be suited in a cross between space fighters and human-scale power suits. Their technology progresses so that they have stored their minds inside black boxes in their skull - and your goal is to recover enemy black boxes to sacrifice their memories into your planet-city-state's governing AI-god.

So yeah, just make up shit instead of defaulting into Star Wars or Star Trek.

All their rules are free up on the SRD, but having the book is nice for the group.
