For GMs who use miniatures and mapping paper in their campaigns, what kind of setup would you recommend for someone on a budget?
For instance, I was thinking I could hunt down some cheap plastic figurines of knights and goblins like you'd typically find in a Dollar General Store, or maybe just print paper tokens with character or monster graphics on them.
>>48732314
Just go with fucking Reaper Bones, don't go full jew-mode when you can buy a goddamn dragon for 6 dollarydoos, or ANY character for just 2.
>>48732430
Bones suuuuuuuck! I'd rather shove slivers of bamboo up my urethra than try to clean the flash off that rubbery crap plastic.
>>48732314
Tokens are a good way to go; go to your local crafting store and pick up a 1" paper punch (usually in scrap booking) and some precut 1" discs. Print a bunch of portraits, glue to the discs, and you've got some classy tokens.
>>48732314
Perry Miniatures has probably the cheapest Knights you're going to find.
Goblins are a hard one, but some people end up selling off their LotR Goblin boxes on eBay for cheap.
When all else fails, Reaper Bones for the cheapest large range you're likely to find for fantasy on the net at decent quality.
How do I find people to play DnD with, /tg/? I know about roll20 and shit but I have nearly no experience with role playing and I'm worried that no one will take me in. A few of my friends kinda wanna play but they keep putting it off every time I bring it up. i have the 3 core books, PHB, DMG, and MM. I have a local game store near me, I guess I could check there? How can I find a group that will accept noobs, /tg/?
> playing D&D
There's your first mistake. OP, what you want is Dungeon World.
It's pretty much objectively one of the best currently out there. It has fast easy to use mechsnics and is perfect for beginners, it's a lot cheaper than most of these other rules bloated systems that cost fifty dollars. There is no reason for extra rules when it is he role playing that matters. Dungeon World is fast and innovative and still feels exactly like the spirit of ADND before DnD 3.5 destroyed the hobby and ruined a generation of role players.

Shoo shoo, shill goblin!
>roll a mage
>1d4 hit die roll = 2 HP to boot
>can't wear armor since lol encumbrance to spellcasting
>party runs into a small band of thieves
>I waste my one and only spell use for the day on a Magic Missile spell, which doesn't inflict enough damage to kill even one enemy
>one of the thieves fires a sling at my mage
>1d4 damage roll = 3 damage
>mage dies on the spot
>healer fees are outrageous, so the party forgoes resurrection
>I'm out of the game
Why are mages so shit?
>>48731027
Either your DM is a jackass or this is a troll because you get at least the maximum number from your HD as HP.
Also your system is shit. A human sized character that's healthy enough to adventure really probably won't die from a single sling stone working at the high end of it's normal damage.
That would require a critical hit, or something, like, crushing your skull.
Play Dungeon Fantasy you idiot. If this isn't a troll. Even if it is, play Dungeon Fantasy from Gurps.

What's a good board game that's co op for at least 4? My only real board game is cosmic encounter and I really really like that.
The Forbidden Desert.
There is a Cthulhu game that is really hard and is co-op.
Arkham Horror it think was the name.
Also Sentinels of the Multiverse is a lot of fun

Fair warning: This thing takes hours. Fine if that's the game you want to play, but if you want fast, it ain't. Add more expansions for more soul crushing playtime.

I want to replace all the obviously magical spells from the wizard's spell-list with more subtle/creepy skills.
>Glass Eyes (1st level Magic-User Spell)
Range: 0
Duration: Level x 6 turns
Target: Spellcaster only
The spellcaster may remove one or both of his eyes without harm. The eyes are magically sustained for the spell's duration and transform into a special, durable substance protected from cuts, dryness, and infection. The eyes can roll and bounce like rubber balls. The spellcaster can see through the eyes through a psychic link.
If the spellcaster puts the eyes back in his socket before the end of the spell's duration, they reconnect to the optic nerves and become normal without incident. Otherwise, the eyes are lost.
This spell has a secondary effect. If the spellcaster has lost one or both of his eyes, he can replace them by casting this spell then placing into his empty eye-sockets fresh or magically preserved eyeballs from a willing or unwilling donor. The eyes must be appropriately sized. The transplanted eyes connect to the spellcaster's optic nerve and function normally.
I've been trying to build a sixth level spells for ages which would curse all of the unborn children of my opponent (D&D 2e genephage) to be flipper babies but negotiations with the DM have been slow.

is the secondary effect permenant?

What are some status symbols associated with traditional games?
If you can get your hand on a butt, and I do mean really all up in on that butt, that's a big plus. You also have to consider using some currency as a fan, but if you do you'll have to be visibly happy while you do it. Some people have emphasized that you can't really get by without getting a gigantic onion, but I'm more inclined to agree with the opinion that holding onto a nice tankard of ale is the best way to establish your status as a traditional gamer.
A neckbeard.
That big chain bag thing with a shitload of dice in it.
I like to have mood music in the background when I play Horror RPGs and I am starting to get sick of Dark synth. Suggestions?

I find film soundtracks to be best. I honestly dig the soundtrack for Eyes Wide Shut for example.
Masked Ball: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoZJdil0_HI
Also, I like using ambient noise in general. Check out the planetary radio sounds, as some of them are rather creepy.

Saturn's Radio Sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sh2-P8hG5-E

Music from some old school horrors like Ju-on and Ringu is pretty good senpai. It's just the right mix of creepy and tense without sounding too actiony like a dead space OST would for example. Other than that, there is nox arcana for dark, mysterious vibe. Check out their lullaby song, that should give you a good feel for their type of music
Interesting NPC design thread. Lets hear who are your players interacting with.
Lets start with a couple I used.
>Non-PTSD veteran:A skilled and honorable soldier who served with special forces. He fucking loves war and everything that comes with it, the danger, the exertion, the camaraderie, the craftsmanship involved weapons, the joy of victory and respects enemies who feel the same. Despite his age he would be completely ready and willing to fight another war. Never tells any war stories.
>Non-brooding death knight. Completely nihilistic. The other kind of nihilistic. He knows he is going to die so why not make it fun. He knows his god is holding the door on the other side for him. Loves danger, suicide missions and leading charges. Will fight for anyone paying him well enough or providing a suitably interesting experience. When no one is willing to hire an absolute madman in black spiky doomplate he goes and fight orcs and random monsters anyway to relieve the tedium. Also has no problem with getting told what to do, he got over that phase 20 years ago. Also like striking poses, tattoos, elarborately painted armors and glam.
>Retired bodyguard. Barely of drinking age, he hit it big when some adventurers hired him out to guard their camp while they kill an interdimensional lich dragon or something, he wasnt really listening. His share of the loot was a wheelbarrow of gold, a street named after him by a grateful king and a cushy job of walking the beat of a rich district where the biggest crimes are littering and holding hands with elves. This happened years ago. Constantly hungers for adventure but he doesnt really believe that big one can be topped so he feels resigned to a life of boredom and giving directions to foreign wizards.
>Orc philosopher ghost. Possibly the smartest orc ever alive(on par with your average villager), bound in a bag of augury bones. He will gladly tell you glimpses of the future if you can defeat him in a battle of wits. He argues like a highschooler throwing out ad hominems and fallacies and if you beat him too hard he gets mad and calls you names instead. If you manage to beat him without bruising his ego he is amazingly useful but all of his advices lead to (usually) winnable brawls.
>Greedy merchant: His wares have a 100% markup over every other trader in town but he gives a free magic weapon away to every adventurer. They never seem to shop anywhere else after.
>>48728196
>He argues like a highschooler throwing out ad hominems and fallacies and if you beat him too hard he gets mad and calls you names instead.
Huh. So you actually CAN make the concept of /b/ into a useful character. Imagine that.

Drag Under 2U Return target creature to it's owner's hand. Draw a card - thought it was an Instant cuz what the fuck!?
Spreading Flames 6R Deals 6 damage divided as you choose among any number of target creatures. Not players, just creatures. Fucking garbage.
Also when I first started playing mtg when I just turned 11, I had this happen to me a lot. I mean I didn't have any cards that made me sacrifice something, I don't remember the rules booklet mentioning that mechanic too. So I ended up trading Counterspell for Dredge thinking it destroys a creature or land and you get a card.
Also I traded a Blurred Mongoose for Keldon Berserker and other crap. I though the Berserker got bigger if you controlled a tapped land, but it turned out it got bigger only when you control NO UNTAPPED lands so that sucked. Fucking people, I swear , those were adults who made those trades fully aware that I knew not what cards were worth something. Don't trust people since.
Lately I've seen many thread about the "Big Guys", but what about the common folks? What about the little imperial citizien and it's many burdens?

Is it just me or does horsemanship kind of get passed over in TTRPGs?
How much do you actually care about or test your PCs ability to control a mount?
Ride checks & bothering to read the rules.
>>48828845
>How much do you actually care about or test your PCs ability to control a mount?
Exactly as much as is necessary to balance out whatever advantages are gained by mounted combatants.
In something like Exalted, where the advantages of being on a horse are fairly small, I wouldn't give a flying wet fuck about challenging the character's horsemanship. (Their fire-breathing-tyrant-lizardship, however, is gonna get a fucking workout.)
In something more down to earth, where being on a horse is a force multiplier, then keeping the beast under control is gonna be a thing.
In Savage Worlds, while fighting from mount-back your fighting skill is capped by your ride skill
So even if you have fighting d8, if you only have riding d6, your fighting is d6 while mounted
I like Savage Worlds, it has a lot of clever rules like that. Too bad it's total shit overall.
The year is 1936, and the Spanish Civil War has just begun. The Republicans look to have the upper hand, holding their territories against the fascist right. Brothers kill brothers, and yesterday´s neighbours and friends are now enemies.
But, unknown to the majority of the populace, both groups have begun using people with special abilities to further their own ends in the war, and the fascists are getting support open from both Germany and Italy, while the rest of the world stands in fear of intervention causing a second world war. If it continues like this, the Republic stands little chance of winning, but the workings of fate are mysterious, and someone is about to begin a very bizarre journey which might change the outcome of the war.
But you know nothing of this, or do you? Who are you, about to begin your bizarre adventure? Will you change the outcome of this war?
