Who are some of the more unusual or surprising real-life people you've met who are into RPGs?
>a special operations forces soldier
>a director of operations at a university
>a UN diplomat
>a nurse
>an IP lawyer
A ton of stoners and ex soldiers, with a lot of overlap.
females.
It never surprises me that actors played in the past, but one of the best character actors I know has a weekly game.
... is set in an office building.
How would you run this a game of this genre in this setting?
Delta Green
or make it around a FEAR team
>>48731538
came here to say this except i haven't played delta green yet.
>>48731522
Ooh, excellent!
First, it has to be anonymous and following its own agenda. Managament, mail, tech support, janitorial, all follow inscrutable and arbitrary rules that have to be learned in painful lessons. This is all mundane mind you, it just provides the breeding ground for evil.
This creates a dissonance which makes people ignore signs of something darker.
>I don't know where Tom is, I guess he got moved to another department.
>You can't open that door, that's not our responsibility.
>No one ever goes to the basement, it simply isn't done.
The theme is of course that modern employee life and ancient cultist life aren't all that different. Both promise individual power in a system detrimental to all at the price of personal morality. The horror is in how it becomes indistinguishable when one hides inside the other.
To drive this perversion further, make the company expressly not evil. Make them provide vital service at a reasonable price. Make them charitable and invested in actually hopeful Third World projects. Make its internal structure something that the company itself suffers and is helpless to address effectively, instead sending employees on hollow team building workshops and mandatory birthday parties.

How many factions do you collect?
I play Cryx and Legion and I'm on the fence about Retribution because I like the simplicity of one Warmachine and Hordes faction.

Retribution and Skorne

Nothing but Cryx. Mk3 has been rough on me thus far.
What do you guys think of this? I've heard that the mechanics are "boardgamey" but I don't know what that means. Have any of you ever played it--would you mind sharing your experiences?
>What do you guys think of this?
It's awesome.
It's about the only Tolkien-licensed anything that actually manages to capture the feel of the books instead of generic fantasy using the Tolkien license as a selling point.
>I've heard that the mechanics are "boardgamey" but I don't know what that means.
I know what it means, but it's not a bad thing.
The map and how the characters move across it is extremely important, as is things like planning your journey and trying to avoid or limit the perils on the way, and certain areas are more dangerous or harsher to travel or are "close to the Shadow" meaning they sap your will and strength much as Mordor did to Sam and Frodo in the books.
There's another boardgamey element in that after every adventure your group can choose to "open" new areas on the map you've explored that are basically adventurer safehouses that can re-supply you and help you rest out an entire season there if necessary; think of how Rivendell is used in the books and the gap between the first bit of Hobbit and Fellowship where they run into dangers and then rest and unspecified time in Rivendell and you have an idea; you can use the in-between "Fellowship phase" to open up new "Rivendells" of sorts across the map to provide you with more safehouses and areas of support.
>Have any of you ever played it--would you mind sharing your experiences?
Played and GMed both.
Which would you like to hear about?
>>48712708
Awesome, thank you!
Ideally I'd like to hear about both playing and GMing, but if you have time for only one, GMing please.
>>48712765
I can do both so I'll do GMing first.
Making a character is stupid easy in the system (basically you pick your culture and then Backround and then physical or personality Traits and that's it after a few spend customization points), so all you need to do is teach players the system itself. It's fairly simple and the most complex part is combat, and even THAT is a far cry from anything like D&D.
Characters tend to get hit a lot in this depending on the situation; basically the easier to make for it for you to hit them the easier it is for THEM to hit YOU, emphasizing how the Fellowship and dwarven party weren't invincible supermen and relied heavily on teamwork to succeed; you have the Forward position (all out offense), the Open position (medium), Defensive (focusing on protecting yourself), or Rearward (where archers are), and rather then just use a grid or something it assumes that the Party is taking a stance to protect rearward fighters and make a best use of their skills against superior numbers and minimize their chances of being surrounded, akin to when Aragorn or Gandalf demands they all stand back to back.
The "HP" is actually your Endurance and represents how hard you can keep exerting yourself while taking minor hits and parrying blows, and the heavier armor you wear the less of a margin of error you have for Endurance because if it drops too low you are "Weary" and less effective in battle.
Critical hits are "Edge", which is like when someone lands a dramatic blow. You roll a Protection score based purely on your armor (Frodo taking a "spear thrust that would skewer a wild boar" but his armor stopping it is an example), and if it fails you are Wounded, though for enemies this represents a fatal injury that takes them out.
Good morning boys and girls, welcome back to Ask A Judge!
Is this the casual thread?
>>48704881
It's mostly the "ask rules questions" thread. If you just want to discuss Magic casually there's no issues there, but if you were wanting deck help or something, I am about the last person you should be asking.
I stop by here way more than I should. But whenever I actually have a judge question, I end up forgetting before getting here. So I usually end up just asking stuff that I am pretty sure I know the answer to, but need confirmation.
Anyway, with the existence of manifest, why has Ixidron's rules text not been updated? Seeing as a 2/2 face down card can be two different things now.

About as often as we play.

I always play super-honest characters, but usually I have at least one other PC in my character's party who's a deceptive little bastard.
>>48749044
How often does your party lie, cheat, and steal?
All the time, constantly, every social encounter. As the Paladin I've taken to just not associating with them on any official level.
It's been done countless times before, but let's do it again! As the title says, let's collaboratively throw together a fantasy setting.
The first decision, I think, should be: high fantasy, low fantasy, or somewhere in between?
>>48748305
The setting and scope of high fantasy, but with the attitude of low fantasy.
>>48748323
How do you mean? As in, people are running around riding dinosaurs and there are dragon kings and magic universities, but it's not super bright and shiny?
If so, that could be neat.
>>48748398
I'm thinking more like you have the elements of high fantasy - prophecy, powerful magic, noble bloodlines, etc.
But instead of it all being bright and shiny there's a lot of messy details brought on by the thing being fouled by vices and harsh realities.
Not "muh game of thrones" but rather simply an examination of classic high fantasy through the lens of less virtuous people.
For example he prophecied king being a harsh conqueror, or entitled. The old sage whose actually an incarnated magical demigod seeming inhuman. Dragons and orcs being hunted to extinction and living in hiding.

so, /tg/, what's your take on events/things/people in 40k?
Anything you'd like for the continuity to add (or retcon)?
Sebastian Yarrick is effectively immortal because of the Orks gestalt field believing him to be unkillable. He is every waking moment is wracked with pain, his body reacts to the psy-field generated by the Orks to fight and kill them, when Orks are near in sufficient numbers he becomes a prisoner in his own body, able only to watch his body moves of its own accord.
As for the Baleful Eye, the ability predated the implant. The Orks thought he could kill with a glance long before he recieved the implant, the implant was needed to prevent others suspecting the taint of Chaos in him.
The reason he is able to understand and speak Orkish is purely because of the orkish gesalt field affecting his mind. He has tried to kill himself dozens of times, but each time his body repairs itself when brought near Orks, his life is a torment and he long ago lost his sanity to the Orks.

That isn't new or original, I want to believe it is one of the Alpha Legion Primarchs on the cusp of achieving demonhood, which the Ultramarines have brought back to the very heart of their homeworld, the most protected place in the whole of the Imperium, outside of Terra.
Other Primarchs achieved similar results upon the slaying of a brother Primarch and their Marines.
