Okay /tg/,
I asked this before with mixed results, so pardon me if I over-explain:
In my settings, all races have developed from previous races. Both Dragonborn and kobolds are descended from a blending of dragon and human essence. There has been a great deal of development / evolution between the dragons and the current humanoid races. My issue is that there is a role of brutish, unthinking, violent, and tribal race of lizard-folk that I'm having trouble connecting to draconic lineage.
In short, how can keep the beastial, lizard aspects of lizard-folk without having anything other than a warm-blooded draconic race to draw from?
My "beast-men" race is decidedly mammalian, so I can't squeeze them in there.

This. Your setting isn't getting marked.

If you must come up with something, just say they're descended from Wyverns. That'd fuck shit up, it turns out Wyverns are the 'original' Dragons, and the stuffy haughty bastards are actually an offshoot of them..

Did they make a monster manual yet? Only thing from keeping me going deeper is the fact I might have to stat up literally every type of monster that the party could happen to fall upon.

My party decided we needed a bard, so we went to a tavern and kidnapped the performing npc bard. We took him into the dungeon and our wizard kept casting friends on him until we realized he was totally useless to us.

Has anyone ever played this? If any of you guys have how is it like? Any stories of sessions and what not would be cool. Also is the system and good and is the setting fun? If not then what is a good system/setting that is like Space: 1889?

Once had a player mow down 20 escaped convicts in the street with a Maxim near the climax visiting London.

You should really fill in the gaps furnished by the book and go buck wild, it make the experience golden for us--you need to plan ahead or be an improv pro tho.

Play none of the prebaked adventures they are all terribly railroady.

Maybe give the PCs and airship early-ish on, but I found a boat confined to canals (we disregarded the canonical width restrictions of the book in the name of fun) was a very good way to keep travel interesting and tense.

So my fellow elegan/tg/entlemen...

I've been away from D&D for a very, very long time.
The last time I touched it, I was a teenager playing 3.5. I lost interest in pretty much everything else for a few years, with WFRP 2nd Edition, World of Darkness (both new and old), Rifts, and a myriad of other such games taking up my time. The last time I so much as glanced at anything D&D was when I was 19.

I'm 25 now, curious about 5e, thinking about open it's carcass and sniffing it's entrails, maybe run a few things on Roll20.

What have I got to look forward to? Is it worth it? Are there settings worth checking out? In terms of settings, my heart is firmly rooted in 2e (having left it on Athas or in Sigil).

5e is a system that combines the best of 2e, 3.5, and 4e all into one system.

Unless you intend to use material that's too hard to convert, there's not much reason not to play 5E.

That said, it's a little short of settings right now. Greyhawk's easy enough since it has so little in the way of unique mechanical elements (and the core books have the pantheon), so if you can find the fluff somewhere else you're good. Forgotten Realms is very solidly supported via the Sword Coast Player's Guide and the setting portions of most of the 5e adventure modules -- indeed, it looks like FR is our new default setting. Get Curse of Strahd if you want to run Ravenloft quite nicely.

Other settings are a little more troubled. Planescape and Spelljammer got about the same treatment they did in 3.5, i.e. a few passages in the core books about cosmology and basically nothing else. Eberron had a cursory mechanical treatment in an Unearthed Arcana article but the fluff is up to you to track down. Dark Sun also requires you to get the fluff somewhere else, and the only psionics rules so far as the brief ones in Unearthed Arcana.

If you're ready to really work for pulling together the fluff, though, there's enough to run any setting you care to. Some of the new things in Sword Coast's Adventurer's Guide are well-suited to other settings too, like the Faction Agent background (it's not hard to see how helpful that would be for a Planescape game).

Kislev where your gods have commandments like
"Don't stand in the open during a lightning storm" and "Don't fuck with a sleeping bear"

Following the commands of the gods in Kislev keeps you alive. Not because the gods assholes who will fuck with you if you don't, but because their commandments are just smart things to do.

It's not new.

I figured we could get a thread going where people suggest RPG systems to use for different types of settings.

I personally am considering running a Sci-Fi-Kung-Fu-Western game, with a flavor similar to Firefly or the Knights of Cydonia music video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3Yc3HhSl1Q). My group is fairly familiar with D20 Modern, but that system doesn't seem like it would lend itself to fast and loose game play very well without alot of GM leniency.

Hello /tg/, I come to you today with a very specific request, I need art of upscale magical personal flying transportation, so things like flying brooms, but only if they also have things like bike seats, footrests, and handlebars

so it needs to fly, be built for one person, be clearly magical, and it needs to look like something that was built to be ridden.

it does not have to be a broom, it could be a magical flying hoverboard, a giant mortal and pestle with a comfy seat and a windshield, or whatever.

Hey /tg/,
I'm going to run a home brew fantasy setting with my friends and I'm not sure what system I want to use. Here are some features I like in games:

>Combat that is in some way dynamic or interesting, ie through the use of abilities or interesting mechanics
>Good progression system
>Enchanted gear or fun loot. Basically nice rewards for the players
>A narrative focus
>Rules that aren't way too crunchy or require constant reference to the rulebook. Basically a nice flow to the game

None of these are necessary for the system, this is just to give you guys an idea of what I like. What systems do you guys recommend and why?

Each system claims that. Few deliver.
>>Good progression system
So... DnD? Class/level isn't really a thing.
>>Enchanted gear or fun loot. Basically nice rewards for the players
That's not systems, that's GMing.
>>A narrative focus
Okay. That can mean many different things.
>>Rules that aren't way too crunchy or require constant reference to the rulebook. Basically a nice flow to the game
This eliminates most candidates. A good choice of criteria.

Try Reign Enchiridion and mod the ORE mechanics as you like, they mod really well. And Reign is a solid base. It has a great combat or skill duel dynamic where opponents interrupt actions. There's some swish but no whittling, damage costs limbs or life suddenly. You can make it as narrative as you want starting with framing challenges all the way to introducing relationships as stats.

Fate could work. Runequest is good.

You should also look at Torchbearer.
