Pointless picture notwithstanding (but certainly eyecatching): how would /tg/ go about converting the protagonists of various well-known fairytales into something suitable to serve as PCs in a fantasy adventure campaign type? I've been toying with the idea of collecting a bunch (led by Jack, of course) for a short term game. The idea is that it won't be clear which fairytale each character is inspired by - it's not like one of them would clearly be Cinderella and one would obviously be Tsarevitch Ivan. But their backgrounds, abilities and appearances would suggest it, and the plot would touch on it.

It's a risk, I know, but I've recently read a book which I think did that pretty well, and I thought I might as well try.

Red Riding Hood--ranger specializing in tracking lycanthropes. rather than the generic "bitter, vengeful" idea, maybe have her working with a druidic sect to patrol the forest and keep its paths safe, has a lot of friends among the fey.

Snow White--human who completely adopted dwarven culture, probably a paladin or fighter.

Sleeping Beauty--king-in-the-mountain type who was put in suspended animation after being wounded/poisoned. maybe some sort of Achilles deal where she was blessed by the fey to be invulnerable to any weapons, but then someone got a lucky hit in with a sharpened spindle.

Puss in Boots--awakened animal or familiar who's been spying on nobles and helping his chosen master (kind of a dim bulb) maneuver to the top of the royal court so he can have all the comforts he wants.

Big Bad Wolf--a minor god of the forest, or the divinely-empowered servant of whatever local god/demon lord of beasts. depending on how you want to interpret him, he could either be an evil monster for the PCs to track down and find a weakness of, or some kind of Princess Mononoke-esque figure who's bitter about humans encroaching on the forest.

>>50029924
Use some more obscure fairy tales. Something like the PCs end up in conflict with a renegade soldier who turned to banditry after he came into possession of a tinder box that summons enormous magic dogs.
>>
>>50029924
Look up old versions of the fairy tales, before they got Disney treatment.

I had a vague idea about running a very short (2-3 sessions) using this name generator... damned if I know what the actual plot would be.

Has anyone here played the recently released TCG for Final Fantasy? I just heard of it yesterday when my LGS was offering free demos and I rather liked it despite hardly paying attention to FF as a franchise in the past.

Participated in a release event today and landed first place doing what I knew best - playing the closest I could to RDW. Cloud is nothing to mess with, as expected since he's apparently one of the main characters.

For anyone who has played it, what do you think of it?

I'm considering a replacement for the alignment chart. Here's what I've got thus far. A series of keywords associated with different ends of different personality dimensions.

Personality Dimensions
>Selfless vs Selfish
Selfless characters will risk harm to themselves in order to help others. Selfish Characters will risk harm to others in order to help themselves.
>Proactive vs Reactive
>Analytical vs Creative
>Dominant vs Submissive
>Freedom vs Responsibility
>Principled vs Spontaneous

What other personality dimensions would be useful in defining a character's personality quickly, accurately, and concisely?

>>Freedom vs Responsibility
false dichotomy
>>
>>50029285
Perhaps without any more detailed explanation you might think so.

How would you otherwise label the willingness to take on obligations and responsibilities vs the insistence on being able to keep your options open and a refusal to commit?
>>
>>50029285
And a dichotomy would seem to imply you would have to pick one or the other, whereas you're entirely able to pick neither, and be somewhere in between.

It's simply to quickly note a character's major personality traits.

The favorite stand of the players in my campaign has to be「Malcolm」. It's just a simple automatic that solves all of its problems via chainsaw, but the way it and it's user interact made it very interesting to see in practice.

Why is it that RPG tournaments no longer happen? Events where groups play roleplayan games with the explicit goal of outperforming other groups playing the same game? They used to be a pretty big and mainstream way to play RPGs (a lot of the original D&D modules are modified versions of tournament modules), and for some reason they just completely vanished. What went wrong? Don't people want to win at D&D anymore?

My opinion on these sort of things is always that if the DM didn't want people to play other races then he shouldn't give you the option.
>>
>>50028403

This. I will usually make it clear players may suffer some kind of discrimination for their race but if it's that debilitating then there's zero reason to make that race an option.

I've been worldbuilding a (fantasy) setting, and one of the things I want it to have is old technology that can't really be replicated any more, but that can still be found and that is used to some limited degree. It's not exactly post-apocalyptic, but it is about the collapse of more advanced civilization, and people making use of what it left behind without the infrastructure or resources (or even knowledge) to actually fabricate that stuff any more.

Thing is, I'm having a hard time coming up with an intresting kind of technology these artifacts of the past would be based on. I really don't want to just go all steampunk with it, but I don't have good, solid ideas at this point either. And just straight magitech or the like is kind of ehh.

So, /tg/, what kind of technology do you like to see in your stuff?
15 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>50027218
Magitek. A lot of the complaints I see around /tg/ is how magic dislodges technological progress yet normal civilization seems to be stuck in the Medieval Age.

One way I would do is that Magic is used as an unlimited energy source. Mages were scientists as well as walking batteries. The ancients figured out a way to store the energy from mana into batteries and powered their society from golems to flying airships.
>>
10/10 movie. I wish I could watch it for the first time again.

Numenara does this sort of thing. Earth has gone through the rise and fall of so many great civilizations that no one remembers the technological golden ages. All of the magic and abilities of the setting are just crazy advanced technology, but no one around remembers how or why it works.
>>
>>50027218
Mine is sort of like what >>50027300 referenced.

Very few people even know there were precursor civilizations and the ones who do usually imagine them to be big magical empires. In reality, they were just civilizations with highly developed technology. One of the greater nations built a system of doomsday bunkers which survived the fall. When new civilizations cropped up thousands of years later and found them it was like opening a vault to a bunch of magic artifacts that even their wisest engineers and scholars couldn't understand the workings of.

Hey /tg/.
Yesterday I GMed for the first time.
There were five people, but we managed well enough.
We were playing on Roll20 using this setting called "The Master's Vault."
It's a nice, short campaign I think.

At the moment we have a Human Ranger, out to make cash fucking money,
a Human Cleric, who wishes to transcend humanity by figuring out the raw essence of what it means to heal, and be alive,
a Dragonborn LG Paladin who follows the Goddess of Light, and only has Light spells (like actually just making light), and his character is incredibly stupid and has blind loyalty to the Human Ranger,
a High-Elf Wizard, who believes he can become the best Wizard in the realm,
and an Elf Rogue, who was a prior petty criminal, now training to become an amazing thief.

It's nothing too serious and just me and my friends.

We ended the first session about 8 hours ago, and everyone liked it more than I thought they would.

What was your first time either GMing or Playing like, /tg/?

investigated a castle with a crazy daemon sword thingy.

Turns out, it was connected with a bebilith that then started stalking around the castle trying to eat us.

Can't quite remember what happened after that. I think we either killed it or the group had to disband.

Being that it is a fucking Beblith going to guess the group disbanded as Bebliths are pretty strong.
