Come, cheer up, my lads, 'tis to glory we steer,
To add something more to this wonderful year;
To honour we call you, as freemen not slaves,
For who are so free as the sons of the waves?

Heart of oak are our ships, jolly tars are our men,
we always are ready; Steady, boys, steady!
We'll fight and we'll conquer again and again.

We never see the French but we wish them to stay,
They always see us and they wish us away;
If they run, we will follow, we will drive them ashore,
And if they won't fight, we can do no more.

They swear they'll invade us, these terrible foes,
They frighten our women, our children and beaus,
But should their flat bottoms in darkness get o'er,
Still Britons they'll find to receive them on shore.

Britannia triumphant, her ships sweep the sea,
Her standard is Justice—her watchword, 'be free.'
Then cheer up, my lads, with one heart let us sing,
Our soldiers, our sailors, our statesmen, and king.

Hey /tg/, /k/ommando here.

I've built a lot of 40k and other table top miniatures but never really gotten into them (mostly because of geography/schedule to actually finish an army of appropriate size and start playing). I'm big into WWII military history, and the other day I stumbled across Bolt Action. It seems attainable and fun, but I was wondering if any of y'all had experience with it? Wouldn't be the first time I was interested in a game and someone had strong opinions about it. I think the "dice in the bag, mixed up turns" mechanism is pretty cool, and is a little closer to an actual skirmish than "me-then-you". Can I have fun with just a couple of squads shooting at a couple of squads in the warehouses of Stalingrad? Do I need 100 little men running around to enjoy the game?

Anyway, any thoughts on the game, mechanism, balance, playability, etc?

Pic somewhat related, ex-soviet SU-100 somewhere in the middle east. Neat to see old hardware in a modern context. Pls no bully.

Bolt Action falls under the category of "historical wargames lite". It borrows VERY heavily from 3e Warhammer 40K, occasionally to its detriment. It also has the issues of actively promoting ahistorical army lists and playstyles that are completely the opposite of what SHOULD be done with a specific faction and their attendant doctrine.

With that said, it's actually a very good historical game because you can get people to actually fucking PLAY the thing. While it's not completely historical, if you have a local group who is willing to commit to putting that restriction upon themselves, it can work just fine. It's also a great "intro" game for people who think historicals are exclusively nothing but tables, charts, and rivet-counting autists - it's much more accessible and easy to learn than most other historicals games.

Most importantly, it gets people actually playing the genre. There's no shame at all in starting out playing Bolt Action. Just be aware there are mini manufacturers who aren't Warlord; getting a 1000-pt Bolt Action army is easily doable (in plastic) by buying stuff like Perry Brothers infantry and Tamiya model kits...all for under $120 for that 1k-point army.

So go have fun with it.

Thanks man! That seems to align fairly well with what I was seeing. I'll definitely check out other mfg's as well, thanks for the tips.

Can the game be enjoyable with just a handful of units or does it get exponentially more fun with bigger army lists?
>>
>>50033830

I've found that the game works best in the 750-1250 point range. Under 750 you're basically limited to a couple of infantry squads and 2-3 support pieces (stationary MGs, etc). Over 1250 the forces start getting unwieldy and you end up taking a really long time to play. The name of the game in WW2 is combined-arms, so having ~25-40 infantry, 3-4 support pieces, 1-2 vehicles, sufficient anti-vehicle firepower, and either artillery or air support takes about 1000 points to get on the table and is the rough sweet spot for the game.

As a point of example, this was my first army list:

OPERATION LIGHTFOOT THEATRE LIST
1 Batt, Rifle Brigade + attachments
22nd Armored Brigade, 7th Armoured Division

HQ .........................93 points
2nd LT (50) Regular

It's actually worked quite well and IMO it gives me lots of options to play with without being so big as to be unfun to play.

Why.

D&D is good.
Please don't tell me you're one of those weird memesters looking to just start shit.

If you want a fantasy game that isn't D&D, you can hardly take two steps without stumbling into one. Just check this out for more information.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_role-playing_games_by_genre

Mind you, you didn't ask for a good one, so you're going to have to wade through a lot of bad games on the way to realizing that D&D is a pretty good set of systems, even the old original one with all of its archaic mechanics.

Turn bad guys into pincushions. Carry a close combat weapon (probably a sword, for the convenience of carrying it in a sheath) in case the bad guys want to get in close and stick you back.

Had an interesting encounter today, DM had expected it to be done in 1-2 hours, ended up being the entire session, figured I'd share it because it went fucking crazy.

So, someone was robbing the shit out of the town for some reason, and, because someone spotted that the thief was short, they naturally assumed it was the party thief, a gnome. We were in a small farming village, so we set up a stakeout to catch the little fucker to prove the thief innocent, because I was sure he hadn't done anything, and had proven it by checking the dates of events and places i knew he had been. On the second night we spotted him climbing out a window and gave chase. I tried to use command to make him stop, but it didn't have any effect, making me suspicious(it was second edition, so command has no saving throw and is AMAZING), so I assumed he was either a magical construct of some sort or a fey(small, fast as fuck, and robbing random peasants? Sounds like fey). The chase went on a while and I was the only one able to keep up, but eventually he fucked up and dropped the bag he had stolen. I snatched it up and threw it behind me to force him to move past me to get it, but he took the opportunity of me stooping down to do a fucking jump off my back and grab the bag before I could react.

So, naturally, I rolled to figure out what the fuck I just encountered, and rolled a 3, learning it was almost certainly a leprechaun. Fey shit. Yaaaay. So I got some fruit and sought the advice of a browney(there was more to it than that, but boring) and then found a tracker, who told me he could find the leprechaun if I gave him something with scent, so we set up nail traps in various windows we thought he might visit- including my own. That night, I slept with my coins under my matress and my weapons close at hand. I woke up to the leprechaun awkwardly standing at the foot of my bed, wrist deep in mattress, trying to steal my coins with a crook made from a stool leg he broke off(he has polymorph object). I kicked him in the fucking face, he jumped out the window, and I got my strips of cloth. Nothing lost, but everything gained.

The next morning, I talked to the owner of the inn and explained what had happened to him. He made a comment about the little fucker having polymorphed it, and I agreed, before heading out. I went to the tracker and gave him the cloth, and we spent the day trying to pick up the scent. Nothing. It seems the little bastard was too sneaky for us. So I got some onions, stuffed a few in a bag, along with about 20 silver. Then I coated the floor below my window with oil to slip him up and went to sleep.

That night, I woke up as the little bastard slipped into my room and snuck to my bedside table, carefully avoiding the slicked floor. I pretended to be asleep until after he grabbed the bag, then lashed out to punch at him, but missed horribly. He, in return, shrunk my bed, causing it to collapse under my weight, and mocked me. I got up and tried to hit him with a haymaker, but he ducked it and taunted me, saying "boy, you're easy to distract", which was followed by me hearing the sounds of someone picking up my sack of gold and saying "A lot easier when the bed's smaller, isn't it?". I wasn't having it, though, and pressed on, swinging at the leprechaun again, knowing he was fucking with me to get out, but luck wasn't on my side and he kept fucking dodging. Around this time I called to the fighter to wake him up having finally thought to get help, and moved around to the window, warding off the leprechaun. The leprechaun lunged at me, faking as if he was going to try to grab something, then dived through the window to freedom, and escape. Meanwhile, the fighter arrived just too late to spot the leprechaun, standing in the room, without a weapon drawn.

"... did you have need of me?" I motioned to the bed, and said "The fucking leprechaun was here! Again!"

It was at around this point I was informed that the leprechaun had, in fact, managed to steal something from me.

My belt.

So the fighter walked into the room and was greeted with me, standing with my pants around my ankles, glaring angrily out the window, and when he questioned if I needed him I motioned to the bed.

So that relationship is ruined forever. 2:1, leprechaun

I was already considering how to beat him if he came back again(though, having stolen from me and embarased me, I doubted he would), and I realized something, the DM having explained the leprechaun's "steal something and vanish ability" to me. I looked at the DM and had to say, "Dammit, now I'm considering having my character sleep in the buff for mechanical reasons". So that's a phrase I never thought I'd have to say.

In the morning I went to the manager, and had to explain that the gnome destoryed the bed. After I explained how the little fucker did he said "He really likes his polymorph, huh?" at which point it finally twigged that I never mentioned the polymorph spell by name, and I had to check to make sure he had been in town for a while- which he had- because, as I remarked, "At this point, anything could be the leprechaun fucking with me." So I was becoming a little bit paranoid.

On the plus side, though, he took the onions. It was time to get the dog again and find that fucking leprechaun. This time it was much easier to find the track, and we quickly found our way deep into the woods to a small earthen hill with a foot and a half wide entrance. Peering in from a distance, I spotted several bags of gold on the side, and I grabbed a branch to retrieve the gold with. After a minute or two fucking around with the branch I managed to retrieve two bags, and pulled them out, triumphant- after all, a leprechaun will do anything for his gold.

Here are a few more general question ;

Would it be worth it to get a liquor license and serve alcohol there, or would that be a clusterfuck in itself?

Table space. How many tables are ideal for a gaming store? I'd like to go with a "smaller" location, simply because it would be more affordable, and perhaps upscale once I make back the loan money.

Thanks.

My fellow humans, we are faced with a dire problem. As you know, the dwarves in the neighboring kingdom of Beardsdane are flooding into our republic because of how awful their country is after the Hammer Insurgency and the war with the elves. They bring in constant problems, such as an incompatible beard-based religion, insulting the quality of our stonemasonry, and refusing to speak Common. Also they keep putting our blacksmiths and masons out of work and are very racist to our half-Orc minority. What should be done?

Found pdf related while poking around the internet, and at first blush it sounds amazing.

Look at published settings, and they sound... decent? But the core engine sounds like a lot of fun, and I want to convert everything to it.

So regale me, /tg/. Is ORE really that good? Are there lootable bits from the published settings? What pitfalls should I look out for or have I been dazzled by the "New Shiny Thing" fallacy all mental budgies suffer from?

All my experiences have been pretty good, but that's a few sessions of Reign and a one-shot of Better Angels. Of them, I'd say I liked Reign's combat better, but the way that Better Angels handled stats/skills is pretty nifty. ORE is a good core mechanic, one of my favorites, but that's all you should look at it as: a mechanic that a game is built on, like d20+mod vs DC or dice pool looking for successes.

There are some quirks, like how it's harder to dodge a headshot than someone trying to hit your legs in Reign, but nothing broken from what I've seen so far, and it's easy enough to mod or swap a given mechanic.

I've always liked to use witches.

The basic idea is to have them distant but everpresent, the influence of their curses and minions always causing problems but the witch themselves out of reach. Also if they defeat a PC they of course take part of their body (gruesomely described of course) as a token to be used in future rituals, which means your previous character's death essentially gets used to screw over your new character.
