Hey guys. I'm considering doing a homebrew thing set in 40K, either with imperial guardsmen or the inquisition.

It involves a heretical sect of psykers that want to build humanity up through unregistered and unorthodox psyker abilities. The antagonists developed a set of powers, both small scale and large, that enhance their bodies the way other psyke powers are more like X-Men abilities.

For example, one set of powers would surround them in a field that drastically absorbs momentum from projectiles. One set would raise their toughness to where they'd be regularly fighting with orks bare handed, tearing them up like pink fleshed hulks.

Is this too out of line with the spirit of 40K? I realize 40K tends to prefer treating heretical psykers like witches and sorcerers, but I was just thinking there may be room for some dudes that refine themselves into behemoths. Fist wizards, really.

I realize, "it's homebrew who gives a fuck?" but hey, I like working with precedent, and if something doesn't fit into the lore or existing mechanics, there's a line between creative liberties and Coldsteel the Hedgehog Guardsman.

Bear in mind that every time a psyker invokes their powers, there's a chance that they'll get sucked into the warp or accidentally open a gate into the warp. Say a team of 20, all activating their powers to go fight Not-Magneto. And that's assuming it only takes one salvo to take him down. How many times does Not-Cyclops use his beam? Because every time he does, there's a chance of ducking everything up.

Then multiply that by how many members of the team there are, add in the fact that they're probably unsanctioned, and you've got a pretty high probability that every time they go to kick ass in a group larger than 5, there's a serious risk of bringing in daemons.

A better in-universe way of making 40k xmen would be cybernetic/biological enhancements which have (mostly) gone wrong. For example, Cyclops has his laser-eyes because a magos tried out making a more-powerful version of the laser eye. It worked, but using the eye-ray on any setting higher than normal gives him a serious headache, and full power knocks him out. Beast was a genetic mutation gone wrong, perhaps an attempt to combine human and xenos DNA, and so on.

I'd stay away from the guys who couldn't be explained in this way, or where such an explanation would make no sense in the setting. For example, don't have Wolverine (at least with his healing factor) because if such a person existed with so great of a healing factor, there's no reason why he wouldn't be captured and used to make all Space Marines damn-near immortal.

Some X-Men would have to be represented as psykers, like Storm and Xavier, but you could probably get away with most of them if you stick to the bio/mechanical enhancements.
>>
>>50021093
Oh no no. I apologize. I either didn't make my intentions clear enough or you read into the superheroes comment too much.. in which case, I'll rephrase to try and be better understood.

I realize that using conventional psyker powers bring the possibility of warping the landscape, damaging things, even if they're exceedingly careless or unlucky, blowing a hole in creation and getting pulled through by demons into the warp. Totally get that.

However, I recall at least in 1st ED (not sure if that was removed by 2nd?) there was a rule where so long as you used half of your power, you could avoid the worst fates of using psyke power. So long as you lowballed it to your willpower, you'd suffer a lot from the anathema you're committing in space, but woudn't summon demons or be yanked through.

With that in mind, the idea wasn't to make literal X-men, but imagine sorcerers/psykers with abilities that artificially bolster their stats. Strength, toughness, mage armor. That sort of thing. So some frail looking wizard guy might only be 5'0 tall, but activating a Psyker power, may add half his Willpower to his Strength rating and crush plasteel like it were paper.

So magical brutes, in other words. Kinds of guys that get into melee with orks and punch them so hard their teeth explode out the backs of their heads.

Their Psyker level and willpower BEING their physical enhancers.
>>
>>50021213

The power you're looking for is called Hammerhand, which quadruples the strength bonus and gives Natural Weapon while keeping your hands from holding anything. Average human's attack would be 1d10+12.

As for direct 1/2WP to S... in theory, yes. But it wouldn't be anything truly terrifying unless they had a weapon. Even then, the average psyker has S30 WP40, so you'd be increasing a sword's attack from 1d10+3 to 1d10+5. It would be scarier if you made it a direct WP to S, and the boss would be something to see.

4e D&D/Strike! RPG
FF RPG 3e
Endless Fantasy Tactics
Retro Phaze RPG
RemiNES RPG

Those are just the ones off the top of my head.

what you can tell me about them?

also this one http://ffrpg.net/
>>
>>50020691
>http://ffrpg.net/
The link here takes you to the FF RPG 3e so yeah...

4e gives each character a set of core powers outlined as At-Wills (your generic basic attacks), Encounter powers (usable 1/encounter, stronger than at-wills but not too much) and Daily powers (usable 1/day and very powerful, good for bosses). Strike! does similar but breaks the mold by allowing you to fluff those up yourself instead of getting a fuck-huge list of them to choose from. Lot's of tactical play in both.

FF RPG 3e is, well, what you get when you take the FF games up through, I think, FFXII and boil them down to their essentials (races, classes, spells, abilities, equipment, etc) and blend them so you can make your setting and such. Plays in combat like FF Tactics.

Endless Fantasy Tactics is FF Tactics with the serial numbers sawed off. Beyond that, I don't know much about it.

Retro Phaze and RemiNES use mostly d6s if I remember right and are designed to play like the old NES/SNES RPGs and are fairly solid and not too complicated.

Of all of them, FFRPG 3e is the most playable as long as the person running it has a very solid idea of the campaign they want to run and more than ready to block some of the classes/races. Allowing everything would be bad for most games.

What is the most "Mary Sue" character your GM has allowed you to play?
43 posts and 9 images submitted.

Vryloka Bard/Sorcerer based on Rachel Alucard from Blazblue.
>>
>>50019663
Is the name "Alucard", whenever it's used, supposed to be ironic? Like do they ever think it's clever, or is it for comedy value? Like when you name the disguised alien Hugh Mann.
>>
A Catachan who sacrificed himself by attaching a frag grenade to a powerfist to stop a slanneshi priestess from summoning something nasty.

The mary sue thing comes in where I apparently survived the entire thing and was able to play the Catachain in a dark heresy campaign not to mention a good half of my body was cybernetic now.

My group has played various editions of DnD for the last three years (3, 4, & 5) and I finally convinced them to play something else.
After putting Exalted, Mutants & Masterminds, GURPS and Dark Heresy on the table, they chose Dark Heresy. While I have GM'd before, I've never done so for this system, and my players have no knowledge of 40k's lore.
Any tips?

well I hope they're good at learning new rules, since it's pretty rule-ridden system.

40k's setting is not difficult to explain, just don't let them violate it with stupid edgemaster backgrounds.

>>
>>50019653
This.
Make sure they understand that they are members of the Inqusition and need to act so or at least play their cards right and do what their Inquisitor wants them to do.
I may have lititle knowledge about DH myself but I do think that who their Inquisitor is and what's his agenda is key to laying out guidelines on the do's and don't's.
Example: The Inquisitor is open minded when it comes to dealing with Xenos and won't mind if you do so but wants the players to keep any dealings under wraps.

A good idea for the players I think would be to have them all from planets that have just recently been joined with the rest of humanity, and so your players have a reason for not knowing enough about the setting. Maybe even feudal or primitive planets.

What would it take to revitalize the 40k tabletop community? It seems, from past observations, that most 40k fans talk about the game, play the RPGs, paint the models... everything but actually play the game. Outside of GW shops, it's all Infinity, Warmachine, and Dropfleet.

So what needs to change?

Anybody have stories of paladins or any other morally righteous party members getting wrecked for trying to be the moralfag in the party

>Paladin also has strict moral code against consumption of alcohol

>Once reaching the festival Paladin begins preaching the evil of alcohol to the rabble, ignored or insulted by nearly everyone there
>Warpreist has brought wagon loaded with kegs of ale to "spread the faith" without Paladins knowledge (thank you bluff checks)
>Paladin the walks to large keg in center of festival places hand on it and begins to pray
>Dice rolled crit 20, his god hears him and turns dwarven ale into water
>Dwarves are clearly pissed, begin to blame party
>Warpriest saves the day by revealing 12 barrels of his faiths finest while entire party throws paladin under the bus
>Tfw being the morally righteous character in the party gets you beaten to death by a mob of angry dwarves

Wait, this was PF? What level was this? How the fuck did the paladin even manage to survive giving away most of his treasure?

Moreover why the fuck did you guys let him give away the party's shit? That's the point where I'd be all "oh fuck no, I'm a cleric and even closer to the Gods than you and even I'm not down with that." One paladin can't take on the entire party. That's a pretty brutal abuse of OOC circumstances that have you all adventuring together to begin with.
>>

>Party has paladin who has been giving majority of parties treasure to charity or to his faith generally pissing off other members
I can't really imagine anyone allowing this. Giving away his portion of the treasure is valid roleplaying of a good and generous character, but taking stuff that belongs to your allies and giving it away is just stupid all around.

ITT: Book settings that would make great RPG settings and why

I'll start with the Rifter's trilogy by Peter Watts

>Widespread ecological destruction, the midwest is a giant dust storm ravaged wasteland thaat has barely any law or order

>Barely effective government and severe enviornmental pollution means a fractured and battered North America where crime and terrorism are common as dirt like in John brunner's The Sheep Look Up

>Bioengineering for corporate use is exceedingly common and widespread (IE, Spies have Loyalty viruses gengeneered into them so that they cannot feel guilt about the things they have to do and can not even think about not cowtowing to the interests of their employees or Underwater Geothermal plant mechanics who are cybernetically modified into being essentially merepeople) but unlike other cyberpunk settings nothing is really all that far "out there" in terms of what can be done

>Cops are there just to control the increasingly angry underclass and help the rich continue to live in what is essentially an entire separate world from the poor

>Ken Lubin. Enough said

>
Behemoth being spread thows the world into total chaos and creates a very destablized "post apocalypse meets hard sf setting"
There isn't enough RPG settings that have a cool '70s esque "Ecological dystopia" feel

Peter Watts plays video games, but does he play traditional games?

He seems to be at least passingly familiar with the roleplaying scene as he name-drops Eclipse Phase, though he refers to it as a "paper-based-open-source-roleplaying game".

Old thread got archived but I'm still here and I'm still working on your maps.

I'm using a name to help keep communications clear.

I'm working on a new way of creating elevation maps and I need some practice.

I'm using photoshop. The elevations are made using a gradient map that I'm constantly tweaking. This map took me about an hour to create.

If any of you are interested, sketch me your continents and mountain ranges and stuff and I'll put together a quick map in the same style.

Please note: these are elevation maps, they don't include biomes or climates or anything like that. I'm working on that method now but I'm not happy with the speed of the results yet.

Well good folks, some of you may remember earlier this week when I asked for some assistance in creating a table of things that players can wake up to after getting blackout drunk after a night out on the town. After taking on some of the suggestions made in that thread and putting in some more of my own, I would like to present you with my current "Blackout Drunk at a Party" Table (broken up into several posts because of the fucking word limit)!

1. Character has lost (X amount of gold)
2. Character has lost (X amount of gold), and now has someone/something after them, trying to "collect on the debt"
3. Character gained (X amount of Gold)
4. Character gained (X amount of gold), but now has someone/something chasing after them, claiming that they were "cheated".
5. Character gained 1 magic item, and not quite sure how they got it.
6 Character gained 1 magic item, not sure what it does, but they know it's definitely magic.
7. +1 Party member
8. Character got married to some sentient creature (use the reincarnation table)
9. Party did something that caught the attention of the whole town
10. Petty crime (vandilism, minor property destruction, indecent exposure, ect.) was committed by character. Guards are keeping an eye out for the party (not actively hunting them), or the party has lost 1D10 X 100 gold for paying a fee.
11. Moderate crime (assault and battery, theft, disregard for authority, ect.) was committed by character. Guards are now actively searching for the party within the city and 10 miles outside of the city walls, or character has lost 3d20 X 100 gold for paying bail.
12. Character has a new tattoo, piercing, haircut.
13. Character awakens nude, gear having been stowed in a bag that has been hidden nearby (in a bush, buried in a shallow hole, hanging from a high tree branch).
14. Party Gains a pet (1 random CR¼ – 1 creature) that only listens to the character.

15. Character awaken with a minor injury (a black eye, stiff knees, sore back/neck, numb toes/fingers) as if they were in a fist fight. Only 1d4 points of damage suffered.
16. Character awakens with a moderate injury (large bruises, a new scar, cracked ribs, broken nose) as if they had taken a few swings from a club. Only 1d8 points of damage suffered.
17. Wake up next to dead body. The body is only recently dead (apparently due to natural causes), dressed in common clothes, and carrying no other items.
18. Character find self covered in blood from an unknown source.
19. Character finds their bags filled with 1d100 pieces of chalk/fish hooks/sealing wax.
20. Character finds a love letter in their bag from a “secret admirer”
21. Character opens their bag and 1d10 fairies fly out. Faries proceed to kiss the character, thank them for a great night, and say they'll send a letter when the kids are born.
22. Character is being carried by 1d6 prostitutes.
23. Character is missing 1d6 teeth. 50% chance the teeth were replaced with ivory, copper, silver, gold, platinum, or gemstones.
24. Character wakes up suffering from a random status effect for 1d4 hours.
25. Character wakes up suspended upside down, from a structure (ex. Strong tree branch or archway) that can support their weight, with their head 1d10 feet from the ground.
26. Characters get kicked awake by a team of bandits (a CR +1 encounter).
27. Character wakes up on top of a small pile of empty glass bottles (50% chance of one bottle actually being full of wine).
28. Character wakes up as the opposite gender. Reverts back to normal within 3d6 minutes after waking up.
29. Party wake up in the wilderness, with 1d8 wolves sniffing at them.
30. Character wakes up hog tied with ropes. Getting out of the ropes will require either a DC 15 slight of hand check, or a DC 17 strength check to break the ropes.
>>
>>50014961
>>50014974
31. Character wakes up inside the cooling remains of a cow (as if it was a cool night and they decided that the best way to stay warm would be to crawl inside a recently killed animal). 33% chance that the farmer will find them, demanding repayment for the lost animal.
32. Character wakes up atop a small pile of furs.
33. Character wakes up surrounded by a ring of low burning fires (fueled by oil soaked logs). DC 16 acrobatics check to jump out of the ring.
