War and Conquest
26th October in military history:
1185 – The Uprising of Asen and Peter begins on the feast day of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki.
1341 – The Byzantine civil war of 1341–47 formally begins with the proclamation of John VI Kantakouzenos as Emperor.
1597 – Imjin War: Admiral Yi Sun-sin routs the Japanese Navy of 300 ships with only 13 ships at the Battle of Myeongnyang.
1775 – King George III of Great Britain goes before Parliament to declare the American colonies in rebellion, and authorized a military response to quell the American Revolution.
1813 – War of 1812: A combined force of British regulars, Canadian militia, and Mohawks defeat the Americans in the Battle of the Chateauguay.
1881 – The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral takes place at Tombstone, Arizona.
1909 – Itō Hirobumi, four time Prime Minister of Japan and Resident-General of Korea, is assassinated by An Jung-geun at the Harbin train station.
1912 – First Balkan War: The Ottoman occupied city of Thessaloniki, is liberated and unified with Greece.
1917 – World War I: Battle of Caporetto; Italy suffers a catastrophic defeat to the forces of Austria-Hungary and Germany. The young unknown Oberleutnant Erwin Rommel captures Mount Matajur with only 100 Germans against a force of over 7000 Italians.
1917 – World War I: Brazil declares war on the Central Powers.
1918 – Erich Ludendorff, quartermaster-general of the Imperial German Army, is dismissed by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany for refusing to cooperate in peace negotiations.
1940 – The P-51 Mustang makes its maiden flight.
1942 – World War II: In the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands during the Guadalcanal Campaign, one U.S. aircraft carrier is sunk and another aircraft carrier is heavily damaged, while two Japanese carriers and one cruiser are heavily damaged.
1943 – World War II: First flight of the Dornier Do 335 "Pfeil".
1944 – World War II: The Battle of Leyte Gulf ends with an overwhelming American victory.
It is 99 years since the start of the Battle of Caporetto (also known as the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo, the Battle of Kobarid or the Battle of Karfreit), fought near the town of Kobarid (now in north-western Slovenia, then part of the Austrian Littoral), on the Austro-Italian front of World War I. The battle was named after the Italian name of the town.
Austro-Hungarian forces, reinforced by German units, were able to break into the Italian front line and rout the Italian army, which had practically no mobile reserves. The battle was a demonstration of the effectiveness of the use of stormtroopers and the infiltration tactics. The use of poison gas by the Germans also played a key role in the collapse of the Italian Second Army
In August 1917 von Hindenburg decided that to keep the Austro-Hungarians in the war, the Germans had to help them defeat the Italian army. Ludendorff was opposed to this but was overruled. In September three experts from the Imperial General Staff, led by the chemist Otto Hahn, went to the Isonzo front to find a site suitable for a gas attack. They proposed attacking the quiet Caporetto sector, where a good road ran west through a mountain valley to the Venetian plain.
The Austro-Hungarian Army Group Boroević, commanded by Svetozar Boroević, was prepared for the offensive. In addition, a new 14th Army was formed with nine Austrian and six German divisions, commanded by the German Otto von Below. The Italians inadvertently helped by providing weather information over their radio.
Foul weather delayed the attack for two days but on 24 October there was no wind and the front was misted over. At 02:00, 894 metal tubes dug into a reverse slope similar to Livens projectors (Gaswurfminen), were triggered electrically to simultaneously fire canisters containing 600 ml (21 imp fl oz; 20 US fl oz) of chlorine-arsenic agent and diphosgene, smothering the Italian trenches in the valley in a dense cloud of poison gas.

>>49964514
There's a lot of rape in the fields of my setting.
>>49964514
Nah, my campaigns are fairly lighthearted.
I shoot for Discworld levels of seriousness - while an important, dramatic plot can exist, there's still room for humor, and I'm not gonna throw around themes like rape beyond maybe a throwaway double entendre about concubines.
>>49964514
Well, I'm sure plenty of rape exists in my setting, but no, I've never shown it "on screen".

To continue the relatively non-shit discussion started in the previous thread, regarding whether Eclipse Phase misses the transhumanist mark or not in it's fervor to sell social anarchism, progressive liberalim and (post-) transhumanism as objectively moral and societal goods; is there any mentioned faction in Eclipse Phase that categorically or at least consistently reject the transhumanist ideal on a basis other than religion, or that isn't consistently described as regressive, reactionary conservatives acting generally like shitheads?
>>49963898
Depends on your transhumanist ideal. I feel like the writers are kind of close minded about the whole thing. It seems like

Cont. from last thread
>What sort of power range are lasers in battletech, gigawatts? 100s of gigwatts? Terawatts?
My personal headcanon is that battlemech reactors sit in the low gigawatt range, which is comparable to a modern nuclear fission reactor. My theory is that the rating is represents the power output in Gigawatts, 100-400 being 1.00-4.00 GW.
It makes sense for an advanced nuclear fusion reactor to generate 4 times as much power of a modern fission reactor while being 1/10th the size.
Lasers and other energy weapons in battletech are powered by super-capacitors that store power generated from the reactor over time, and then release it in an extremely high energy burst, sort of how a 240v wallsocket could power a 2000000v capacitor bank, so a cERLL could possibly be outputting 1000 times more energy per seconds then the reactor while it fires

Its super early on so dont be too harsh. Id love to hear what you guys think
In the spirit of /tg/ occasionally getting stuff done, last week I shared a homebrew creation with the community. The Strike Witches character generator is a supplement for the "Dive Into the Sky" RPG, and exists mainly because generating random pantsless magical girls carrying gigantic firearms is sometimesfun.
There was a fair amount of commentary, and a number of typos were identified and suggestions made, and on the whole the 1st edition should be a reminder to everyone not to be the editor/layout person on your own work. Nonetheless, I promised a Revised Edition of the character generator by early this week, and here it is. Something like 90% of the suggestions made were acted upon, so thank you everyone for the commentary last thread.
I consider this to be the final version, unless something massive and critical is uncovered which we didn't find in the last thread. Have fun with it, or don't. I'm not your boss.

Does anyone have any ship designs that are more tower-focused rather than naval deck layout?
Which is to say: down is towards the engines. Even if you have artificial gravity, unless down is toward the engines whenever your ship accelerates everything in your ship is going to be flung sideways. You would have to build all sorts of redundant extra gravitational systems just to counteract this force when, instead, you could just have your engines be 'down' and then vary your artificial gravity to account for how much, or how little, you are accelerating at a given time.

I feel i might want giants, but my setting is low fantasy.
is there a non-magic justification for their existance?
Otherwise I already have a species of spider monkeys acting as the dwarf/halfling/gnome equivalent, so I could just have intelligent gorillas they call giants but aren't necessarily giants to humans
>>49951169
Big things need a lot of food, and if their size is unnecessary for survival (and makes them need more food) it will slowly be decreased by natural selection or not evolve in the first place.
My giants evolved alongside humans in firm symbiosis throughout human history, humans grow food for the giants and the giants build walls and protect the humans. It was in the best interest of the humans to feed the giants well and help them to selectively breed to get them even larger.
There are quite a few ways to get giants to work:
>Other races help feed them, like what I did
>They hibernate or spend lots of time dormant and not using energy
>They have efficient metabolisms and can store huge amounts of energy for later use
>They have a vast and reliable source of food (you'll need to explain why humans don't use it)
>Magic (not recommended)
>>49951169
Do they really need to be justified if there's no magic?
The only thing one would know about giants is that they're big, eat a lot, and should be avoided.

Since last thread OP seemed to be pulling in every direction at once, event/time period themed threads are now an (experimental) thing. Unless everyone throws a fit and insists on going back to the previous free-for-all.
FOCUS:War of the Beast. We already have a sizable chunk of the Battle of Terra, but what about the battles leading up to it; what about the steady retreat of the Primarchs and their Legions, or about initial contact with the Orks? Previous in-demand shit (Croneldar Big Bads, in particular) still welcome. Also I swear I'm going to be productive soon. Fresh dank OC for this thread is in the pipeline.
>>49948023
Armageddon Should hold a significance to the Orks or their Croneworlder masters, hence why there have been 8 great wars to take the place independent of the Black Crusades.
Maybe the First Deamon Prince of Slaanesh, the equivalent in their culture of Eldrad, died there during the fledgling days of the Human/Eldar alliance.

Idea I had bouncing around: for the two lost legions, what do people think about having them be completely wiped out during the War of the Beast to emphasize how brutal the war was?
I believe alliances and or treaties where humanity and elves are allies and or great friends is a good thing. Waifuisms and husbando-ing aside, both races can work together and benefit each other's great traits.
>Humans
>strong and hardy
>endurable
>gritty
>are very innovative and very creative
>can adapt to virtually any given situation
>Elves
>powerful wizards and spellcasters
>long life spans make them well experienced in various fields
>very wise and smart, thus making them great leaders in numerous occasions and even good politicians
>have great knowledge and secrets of many things
>they are quick and agile people making them equally good fighters and combatants just like humans
Elves, being a race of very smart and wise beautiful humanoid beings who're also powerful magic users with pointy ears are best for being allies with instead of being enemies with. Wouldn't you agree?
>powerful wizards and spellcasters.
This is a bit of a side tangent, but I never understood this part. Magic seems like something you need expensive and advanced institutions to teach, study, and research, and elves are all about living like hippies and generally NOT being modern or advanced. Why are they always good spellcasters in things like DnD?
>>49946638
