Somebody explain to me all the ways that Dungeon World is a bad system.
66 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
>>50159094
It is literally just "roll 2d6, on a 7-9 you win but feel bad, on a 10+ you win"

It encourages players to define the setting rather than being part of it - stuff like letting them decide what rumours they hear in town. The sense of entitlement this creates is then exported to other games.
>>
>>50159094
Have you played or at least read Apocalypse World?
Because that would make the explanation a lot easier.
>>
>>50159094
there's nothing bad about it, it does what it sets out to do, be an extremely simplistic system

But its also horridly limited by being an extremely simplistic system. Thats not fun for me. Its great for others but its not really what i'm looking for.

Once you have the know-how, bicycles can be easily pulled off in medieval settings.

Why aren't they seen more, then? People carry over lots of stuff from modern into medieval, but so rarely carry over bicycles.

Sure, primitive ones can't beat a horse, but they are cheaper than battle horses, light, don't need food...

How would inclusion of bicycles change a regular medieval fantasy setting?

It looks silly. Bikes in general look silly in any genre that isn't aimed at young adults. Adults who ride bikes in real life look silly.

See the movie Turbokid for further research.

Hey /tg/

The gnomish rogue/blender in my group made a pact with a malevolent entity after being absorbed into a large cube of orichalcum that was left to grow by an ancient dwarven race I've based on the dwemer, but you know. Dwarves instead of elves.

In my setting its a mixture of mithril and adamantine and the divine spark of a god. Sort of rare. The dwarves had affixed it to the tap root of the forest spirit of an island and corrupted the spirit. It absorbed life instead of granting it, cause the minute amount of orichcalcum to grow with the divine spark of the spirit.

They left a minder who had his quarters set up through the orichcalcum sort of like a weak version of the gems rooms in Stephen Universe, then he died, and left an imprint on the rooms.

This is the entity the rogue made a pact with. Pseudo divine leftovers with a chip on its shoulder. Should I just open the undead pact warlock class or should I do a boon bane thing based on the him serving the goals of this entity? The cube was destroyed with the combined prayers of the parties holy rollers and the personal sacrifice of their guide who convinced the spirit to follow the natural path and die, unwittingly becoming the next forest spirit.

Thoughts?

What were the terms of the unholy pact?

The spirit imprint of the Orichcalcum has already moved into the great beyond from the prayer/heroic sacrifice one two punch. What is left to enforce and empower said pact with the gnome?

Unless you meant the Forest Spirit was allowed to pass on while the Dorf Imprint still seethes with purposes unfulfilled.

I'd say boon/bane because the rogue is now a double agent for a fossilized life extraction engineer.
>>
>>50159536
We faded to black after the gnome requested terms. The pact was made prior to the demise of the entity. Perhaps a power or two in exchange for borrowing his vessel three times at the entities choosing?

I'd say it still resides within the gnome, perhaps sensing what was about to occur. It took refuge when the pact was offered.

Let's say +2 con and access to some necromancy spells I've cooked up custom wise for the necromancy school. Cause 5e borked it hard. Or just a, three times per day, bonus action aoe life drain in a 5ft burst. 2d8 necrotic damage to all enemies in the burst gain temp hp equal to half damage dealt?

Thanks for the response, btw. Appreciate it.
>>
>>50159536
Also, yes the forest spirit passed on, the elven guide became a dryad sapling in the remains of the old forest spirits tree, and the thanks to your input the life extraction engineer seethes inside the gnome now. It seems more fitting.

Hi guys, has someone played or has the 7th edition of Call of Cthulhu by Chaossium? I have to take on a entire day of narrate an 3 hour CoC adventure, thrice, for an event in my city, but i wanted to test those new rules there (perfect for an extensive test) and make my mind buying the new edition. Ill try this one with their quick start rules. So it would be very nice from you if you could give impresions, tips, or anything related about playing with this edition. Also, i would want to know if it would be ok to run this with the quick start rules (remember, 3 hours max time for the adventure), I will use Lost in a Book, from the Arkham Now Sample Scenario. Thank you very much on advance.

Never played it but the differences to earlier edition don't seem that great. Attributes are x5 now, on a d100 scale. You have advantaged/disadvantage similar to D&D (reroll take highest/lowest). If you have run D&D before, it's a gradual change. Should be compatible with old scenarios too once you understand the changes made.

But maybe someone better informed can help you out more.

>editions
CoC is not an editions game like DnD. It remains fully compatible. You can play old materials with the new crunch and vice versa, the conversion can be done on the fly it's so simple.

The main difference is in shifting the game from a keeper vs investigators crunch (that never matched the game dynamic anyway) to a more story involved mode. But the alterations are minor and entirely optional.

The biggest change is pushing and luck spending. These are 2 simple ways to pass failed skill checks after the fact by raising the stakes. It gives players more meta power while also handing them more rope to hang their own characters with. And it connects onto the existing rules but doesn't change them around radically. If you don't want to you can simply not. But I would. It's really good!

Skills got reordered with some sense. I like it. Social skills, which are essential, are more structured. Melee combat got streamlined for narrative freedom and less pointless skill point absorption. It's just good housekeeping.

Sanity remains structurally the same but got expanded with tables of keeper options and detailed examples of sanity effects. What used to be all up to the keeper who maybe got the support of an unstructured list of outdated diagnoses now has bloomed into a functional framework of game effects that stem from san loss. It makes sanity more of a story element and less of a countdown. Sanity remains the most precious character resource along with health, and now luck has joined the countdown. But the new sanity takes that decay and fleshes it out in character terms involving character background, off screen moments, trust within the group, just all kinds of ways to make it matter in game terms and the story that creates.

I still don't like the heavy weapons and explosives, but that was never what CoC is about and the few climactic instances it comes into play can be houseruled or resolved by fiat easily.

The Last March of the Ents is pretty damn solid. Though there are some great moments in LotR outside the action sequences, like Gandalf's wisdom

>So do all who live in such times, but it is not for them to decide
>What matters is what we do with the time we are given

Lord of the Rings, for all the DM of the Rings jokes, is a pretty great campaign in the sense that there's just as much time experiencing the beauty of the world and learning great morals as there is on awesome action sequences.
>>
>>50148061
I got shivers from them both. THe power that these movies held over a young me is hard to explain. And when I read the books that power was redoubled. Yes, We've been inundated by tolkienesque fantasy, But... It is certainly for a good reason. LoTR is a very powerful set of fictions.
