DMing a D&D campaign for some dudes and dudettes. I'm always a firm believer that some nice tasteful music can enhance the mood I'm trying to establish. Problem is, the music that most people would associate with a fantasy setting is just not my thing. I really can't stand it. All these orchestras pumping out anthemic, booming crescendos and shit? Yeah, I really hate it. To the point that it would be a detriment, I think. I'd be distracted by how awful the music is.

Think I can get away with scoring a D&D setting with jazz and funk music? Or should I just ditch the whole idea and not use anything at all?

depends on your group. Most people nowadays think jazz and funk are "weird". It's safest to go with Irish jigs/reels or fantasy movie soundtracks or just lively European folk music in general, really

>It's safest to go with Irish jigs/reels
I could live with that, I think. Something more rustic, modest and regional might be okay. It's the ultra suffocating bombast and melodrama I object to, mostly.
>>
Do jazz and funk.

If a player gets weird about it just look them in the eye and tell them to keep chill, cat.

just have some sort of phenomenon where the majority of people either can't see what's going on ala some sort of magic fog effect obscuring the true nature of the world, or have the setting be full of people who are so cynical they could literally see the dead rise and just assume it's some stupid stunt or a meth head who really needs a shower

Hey /tg/, how come dnd 5e games at my FLG are full of power gaming asshats who brag to my actual face about their fictional damage they dealt?

Where's the love for the story and the roleplay? The only character development i usually see is I WANNA BE THE HERO shit.

>>
>>50161529
Be the change you wanna see, asshole.

Run games where you discourage that activity and encourage story and roleplay.

If you can't get it done, burn down the store because obviously you'll never amount to anything.
>>
>>50161529
>dnd
There's your problem.
>>
>>50161529
Hard to move the story along when you're dead, people powergame because dnd used to encourage stupid ways of killing PCs. This made the mentality of making a character who can win any encounter, becuase how the fuck do you get involved in a story with rotating characters?

In any setting where there is magic built for warfare would it not make sense that a person who fights wars aka a warrior (fighter) would be the one to learn it?

From a purely meta perspective mostly unique to DND the wizard is the sort who spends their time as academics who do not engage in physical activity beyond maybe regular exercise while the fighter typically trains to master the art of fighting and all the tools associated with it.

Naturally you have "gish" classes but then you have this insistance that the fighter has to be mundane in every sense of the word and is yet still reliant on magic to get things done.

TL:DR,DC
The fighter should have access to tools appropriate to his role and that includes magic appropriate to his role as well from the get go.

D&D magic is cancerous shit to begin with.
>>
Some people really just want to be a mundane character even in a world full of magic. Even if they are special because of "magic by another name". It's just the hero fantasy they like to play out.
>>
You are correct, OP, and thankfully there are a lot of settings which embrace the idea.

I'm really loving a lot of the mechanics in this game. But I'm new to GMing and having issues. How do I decide the dice pool of environmental combat/skill checks that aren't associated with an NPC?

For example, say the barn the PCs are sleeping in burns down. They players are clearly rolling Body+Heart, because it's physical but not fighting. But how do I decide how many dice the fire gets?

"When a character launches a conflict, and there's no clear opposition, I roll 4d6 plus the Demonic Influence."
>>
>>50152347
Demonic Influence depends on what the Dogs have discovered in town.

Injustice: 1d10
Demonic Attacks: 2d10
Heresy: 3d10
Sorcery: 4d10
Hate and Murder: 5d10
>>
Actually, the first thing I should have asked is 'Why is the barn the PCs are sleeping in burning down?'

Did an NPC light the fire to try and kill the Dogs? In that case, you would use the NPC's stats.

What's the weight of armor for an average medieval knight /tg/?

I'm asking because I play with a GM using a homebrew system who insists DnD full plate would weigh "at least 80-90 pounds".
177 posts and 40 images submitted.
>>
>>50150485

Your average medieval knight would be in some kind of mail armor, not a full plate harness, which was really more of a renaissance thing.

Full plate usually weighed on the order of 40-60 pounds, depending on the size of the individual in question and the sort of armor you've got (there's considerable variation)

Mail would be slightly but not much lighter, and actually more encumbering as it isn't distributed around the body as well.
>>
>>50150506

Oh, crap, no; a typical coat of maille is 25–30 lbs.

But you're right in that it's more cumbersome than a suit of armor because all the weight hangs on the shoulders. Wearing maille for any length of time is fatiguing.
>>
>>50150506
Much of the medieval period was part of the renaissance. Or the other way around.

Alright /tg/, I want you to think of your favorite miniature in your possession from any wargame, from any company, excluding space Ships.

Alright, do you have it in mind? Got it? Suddenly, you are instantly transformed into that miniature. You retain your mind and memories, but otherwise, you gain all the advantages and disadvantages of your mini. And we're talking about fluff wise, so no space marines getting offed by shitty ghetto pistols. If you picked a tank or a vehicle, you are given a highly loyal crew to help man it, but you are still the same, physically. What do you do?

Hard Core mode: The effect applies to everyone who posted in this thread simultaneously. So you have to also take into acount the other anon's in this thread.

Cleric for pure Healing.

Paladin for Healing and Melee.

Witch for Healing and Magic.
>>
>>50170498
If you want something a bit more interesting, play an alchemist and keep people stocked with healing potions.
>>
>>50170523
What would be the best way to play a support-oriented paladin, but still tanky? More focused on protection NOW than healing LATER.

Not sure how many folks are around right now, but I have a shiny new WIP to share. It's getting close to being done, but the item section leaves me wanting, and yes, obviously, I still need to come up with some drawbacks.

But I thought I'd remind everyone that I exist, and ask for input. Please be as harsh and thorough as you can. I need it.

I occasionally play 4e, 5e, Jumpers, and some other shit with some buddies of mine. I wanna starting running games of any kind for another group, and my DM suggested I start with FAGS. The problem is, I have no idea what that is. Educate me, /tg/.

>>
>>50166381
This isn't some really shitty joke. Whenever we have an off day, we just play FAGS, some game that doesn't have any real setting or sheets or any of that shit. It's just a system, a shell that you can pretty much play anything in, at least that's how I understand it. It might be way less well known than I previously thought, but they way they all say it it seems like it's a pretty common thing.
>>
>>50166912
Google brings up nothing. The /tg/ archive brings up nothing. There is no mention of this game anywhere on the internet. Have you considered it's just something your friends made up?

Possible motivations for a granny adventurer. Let's brainstorm.

>isn't content to die in bed; wants to go out with a bang
>someone kidnapped her favorite grandkids
>she's been adventuring her whole life and is simply too stubborn to quit
>has gone completely senile and is convinced the government has been taken over by reptilians that only she can see

Is there any game that focuses on leading troops on either a large or small scale? I know that some games that feature mass combat rules can be made into a military army vs army kind of game but I am thinking more about games that has that as its intended gameplay focus.

Let's talk about paladins falling.
Is it more courageous for a paladin to cross the rickety bridge, testing if it is safe and risking falling through any rotten board?
Or is it more courageous for the paladin to cross last, taking the risk of going over the bridge that has taken the abuse of all the other party members crossing it and damaging it further?

A true paladin would cross first to test it, then jump in the water and swim back across so they could be the last to take it as well
