I've put some thought into starting my first army of table top 40k and I'd like some advice on what to get. I think tyranids look cool but they seem like a bitch to paint. Cost is an issue so what's the cheapest army to get? Should I stick with 'nids or find something better?
15 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
You should go with the army you like the most, the rules will come and go and your painting will improve. The models will remain.

So pick nids. They are expensive if you go all infantry and no monstrous creatures but start small and have a mix in your army.

Buy the getting started box and start small. Painting is easy just ask your local gw for advice or watch some duncan rhodes vids on youtube

Like >>50601018 said, it's better to get an army you like rather than one you may regret later. Grab the Start Collecting! set, and build your army up from there. Another good way to save money (if you have friends who will let you do it) is to play with paper bases instead of models at first so you can figure out what units you like best before you go and dump money on them. Also, if you're getting Tyranids, you're going to want Shield of Baal: Leviathan, as it gives the Tyranids new units and formations that buff them considerably. You can grab this book, and the Tyranid codex for free from here: mega:///#F!BxI1HSgI!0tKymKh9RZTzGpgIA5EyCg

Also, 1d4chan's tactica article is good for helping decide which models you want to get; it gives a summary of each unit, how to use them, and, most importantly with 'nids, which ones to avoid.

Thanks man, and I'm saying that 'nids would be a bitch is that painting 30 gaunts gets repetitive though I'm still going to go for them.

Any troop recommendations for 'nids? I know gaunts are a must and I need at least one tyrant and a couple warriors to spread the synapse.

hey /tg/,
why dont we talk about cavalry much in this board? lots of cultures in history have had interesting and distinct forms of cavalry which are famous as being representative of their entire culture. for example:
companions
cataphracts
mamaluks
knights
hussars
chariots
elephants
samurai
keshik

what interesting cavalry types would appear in a fantasy setting /tg/?

heres my contribution: girraffe riders would are picked for their exellecent eyesight as scouts and sentries in the vast plains. the giraffe gives them the best field of view and is able to travel long distances faster. in battle, they are able to attack from behind the front line of shorter troops. they are highly trained and are known for being able to find weak points in the enemy line and rapidly redeploy to push through it by their own initiative. they are equipped with javelins, shields and lances.

nothing wrong with riding a horse through a dungeon or in a castle ruin.

fuck it, invent some kind of giant gecko that people can ride in duneons. they are short, and can navigate uneven terrain easily.

We all know certain factions such as the Inquisition, some Space Marines (Wolfs), and Custodes will often recruit regular Guardsmen to serve alongside them in some mission, or as serfs, or even as full-blown members.

We also know the Deathwatch is the grimdark equivalent of the Delta Force, as in, several Space Marines from different chapters, cross-trained together to fullfill a special assignment (Spec-Ops).

What I want to know, and I have been searching all over for it, if is there any "Special Ops" regiment for the Imperial Guardsmen. I wonder if there is such a thing, how could I incorporate it into a game, and if such a thing would fit with the cannon. Spec-Ops as in: "There are Guardsmen from several different regiments, who performed excellently and survived situations not even a more speciallized agent could. Let's band them together and send them on dangerous assignments.".

I'm pretty sure this idea didn't originate from my head, I read something along those lines here before.

Stormtroopers? Tempestus Scions? Inquisitorial Acolytes?
>>
>>50596362
Yes, they are called acolytes.
>>
>>50596362
Having Space Marines/Inquisitors/Assassins kinds of defeats the purpose of having a special unit of guardsmen, simply because any of the first ones would do a much better job than the latter. I mean, if you need a Hulk cleansed, send in the Deathwatch. If you need someone dead, send in an Assassin. If a relic needs recovering, send in the Inquisitor

A special group of Guardsmen would only take whatever mission is deemed too wastefull to deploy the Space Marines/Inquisitor/Assassins, but too risky to send in regular humans. But then again, the Imperium will usually fix those problems by throwing endless hordes of Guardsmen at that issue until it's resolved, or escalated to the point it warrants getting the special groups.

So I can't really see that happening. I can imagine exceptional Guardsmen would be drafted into the Inquisition or maybe the Imperial Assassins, or an really, really, really exceptional individual waking up to find himself being augmented to become a Custodes

Do y'all recast miniatures for personal use in your games? What about casting your own, original miniatures? Do you find it difficult to capture details?

Could one design original proxy models (avoiding copyright concerns) and have them 3d printed on demand, then recast more copies? How to avoid print lines in the master model?
42 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
HeroForge is a thing where you can have extremely custom minis 3D printed for you. Check out their website.
>>
>>50590678
Yes. No. No. Yes.

Just recast your miniatures. Unless you're playing at an actual GW and brag about it, no one's going to know. They're your miniatures; as long you don't sell them, nothing's wrong.
>>
>>50590678
I need to figure out a way to recast bits and the like. I do a ton of conversions and some of the parts I use are from very old and hard to replace sources. I'd like to just make a copy to carve up and leave the originals intact.

Would it make sense for an Ogre to be adopted by a human? I want a brute with human foster parents Hellboy style but I'm not sure if an Orc wouldn't be a better option since Ogres are large and wouldn't fit most homes. On the other hand Orcs just aren't as cool to me.

You can justify anything mate. Just think of what the problems are and then come up with solutions

>ogres too damn big

well then he got adopted by a rich guy with a big house.
>>
>>50579584
>>50579612
Or the Ogre helps his foster parents build a bigger house. That big and he would be able to lift logs like nothing.

Adopted?
Not likely.
Taken in as a future servant?
Much more reasonable.

New miniature game by Wyrd.

>The Other Side is an upcoming game about allegiances doing battle across the Earth in a fight for supremacy and survival. Using 32mm miniatures, players will control squads of troops and massive titans as they attempt to defeat their foes and seize control of Earth.. Conflict is resolved through the use of a deck of cards, allowing players more control over their own destinies. The Other Side shares a world with Malifaux, but the games are not compatible.

>The Other Side is a streamlined game intended to be easy to pick up and learn while still providing an exciting, tactical experience for players.

>The epic battles taking place across the Earth are played out on a 6 x 4 table with scattered, light terrain. Alternating activations keep you involved in the action every step of the way, while a five turn game keeps the fighting quick and bloody. The average game lasts about two hours.

>The Other Side is won and lost by how well your troops complete their mission, creating an ebb and flow to the battle as objectives are fiercely contested throughout the entire game

I'm surprised how little I care for the factions. Something about the style just really falls flat for me. All I could see myself going for are the Cult because I like teleporty shenanigans.
>>
>>50546994
I'm the opposite, like what I've seen of all the faction except the Brits, and that's just because I don't care for colonial Brits. The robot is still cool.

I think the Gibbering Horde is having the hardest time selling itself for most people. That's because all the original promotion art and model renders sold the Lovecraftian Deep Ones, but if you look at the splash art on the website, there is other things in the faction. Like those chameleon guys, or that big dinosaur muthafucka.

I know that the Abyssinians are getting flack because of "WE WAZ KANGS" bullshit, but fuck that. Some of us don't mind something other than the same old same old Europeans.

When I fist saw the concepts and model mocks, I felt similarly, though the non-'Nids looked pretty weak.
Now that I've seen more...

Disappointingly (both for Wyrd and myself) part of that is that they seem to have backed off the more stereotypical African imagery - the first shots of the Crow Runners with feathers and blades looked cool as shit, but the latest batch of shots look ever more generically armoured.

The last thread I made didn't go anywhere so I'm making another one.

/TG/ I need your help

I have a big game of warhammer coming up. My friend is coming down to visit me for the new years and we're both getting our armies together.

It's a roughly 2000 point game of me and my Space Marines vs his Chaos space marines.

He's packing some serious heat, He has a greater brass scorpion, two heldrakes, typhus, terminators galore, and two mauler fiends (I know he has some other stuff but we both decided to keep parts of our army secret.)

We both decided to play to win, so we're going all out (but not complete total cheese).

I've been reading a lot of shit but particular I'm worried the scorpion and his heldrakes.

I currently have

1 imperial knight paladin with chainsaw arm and rapid fire battle cannon

1 terminator squad w/ havoc missile launcher and assault cannon

1 terminator assault squad w/ TH/SS

x7 Space Marines with frag grenades, plasma gun, rocket launcher. 1 veteran sergeant with plasma pistol and power sword.

x7 Space Marines with frag grenades, plasma gun, melta-gun. 1 veteran sergeant with plasma pistol and power fist (might trade for lightning claws)

1 land raider.

I have room for some more stuff in my army, what should I get and how what strategies should I use to defeat my opponent. He always beats me but this is my time. I want to win for The Emperor. Please halp.

I need some HQ choices that would be good.

I was thinking about bringing an allied detachment of grey knight terminators w/ caldor draigo, but I don't know if that would be helpful.

I was also thinking maybe some assault marines to get some more fast attack.

Hey /tg/, first and foremost this is not a 'redeemed succubus' thread or a chance to post red-tinted hotties (although I doubt you'll find much resistance to it). Nay, this is a cry for help.

I'm a vet GM at this point and I'm an aspiring actor, meaning my improv is, generally, above average, making my plot-hooks and stories that bound off the intended rails relatively seamless to my players. Luckily, this illusion has not been broken, due to a timely session end, but it may be soon, and this is where you come in. Let me catch you up, with the story, so far:

In my campaign, a player was running a skeletal knight PC. The fellow was once a paladin, who felt his death to be a spit in his face (fairly valid, based on circumstances) and in his final rage, tore the good from his heart and allowed evil to fill the gaps, resurrecting him in his skeletal form. However, while he was no less miffed with his gods, he quickly realised how much he fucking hated being a skeleton. Long story, short, he eventually found a group of four sister succubi, all eternally bound to a single master, who missused them (didn't give them the chance to gobble dick OR kill people- truly a Blackheart). Skeleton man, after witnessing the succubi arouse his non-existent senses killed their master of 4 centuries and unbound them from their torment. He did this without signing any contracts with them, leaving the last vestige of his humanity in the trust of these four just doing right by him and offering to help, rather than binding them to help.

Luckily, they did! They, while in contact with him, could make him feel his flesh and innards, and after returning to their hellish abode, performed a sacrificial bargain to rebind demonic flesh to his skeletal form. Three of the succubi went to immediately re-acquainting themselves with their decadent home and with eachother, but another (seemingly the eldest) took to their books and began work. Cont-

He soon learned that, thanks to their imprisonment, a lot of people that they made crossroads deals with (as succubi are not bound just to soul snatch and grabs, via the peepee in my setting) have been coasting that shit for the last four centuries without paying up on their end. Our hero, wishing to lay these creatures with his newfound demon dong and pay them back for their swift work, agrees to assist in the legwork of this debt issue.

The problem that I present to you, /tg/ is what the fuck kind of errands can I send him on that aren't just 'Go kill this guy who bid for immortality, with this soul-stealing blade, kthx.'

tl;dr: What interesting quests would you find in the 400 year paperwork backlog of dealmaking semen demons?
>>
>>50600438
Pic also pretty related, I guess.
>>
>>50600465
Why are the succubus even considering him for legwork, if they're seemingly much more powerful than him?
