1E player here. How does the current edition differ from the original one?
>>
>>50580607
1st -> 2nd

Character pre-game generation and some appearance characteristics are not included in HMC (but could be added trivially).

HMC has an optional rule for creating characters on a point system.

The Touch and Speed attributes are removed, and Stamina is added.

Endurance is now the average of Strength, Will, and Stamina.

Players are now encouraged to select professions from a short list; the full table of professions is still available.

Easier bookkeeping and less table lookups

Magic changes

1-> gold

Detailed rules for family development
Aging rules
revised shock/injury/healing rules,
More rules on combat

You could play HM1 with Gold with little problem. HM2 there are a fair bit of changes.

never played HM3

HM2 was a attempt to make the rules more simple by columbia games, the guy who created it didn't like it, and went his own way to make HM Gold, and they fought about legal rights till he died.

>revised shock/injury/healing rules
less deadly?

one thing I always disliked about HM (though I love the system A LOT) is unarmed combat damage. it never seemed very realistic to me.

>The best parts of AD&D?
The DMG, easily.

For a more specific part, I'm somewhat fond of the disease tables. No other edition got close, I feel.

The random dungeon generator is also neat, albeit not as original - it's pretty much just an expanded version of the one from The Strategic Review #1, and I don't really like it as much since the added detail makes it more clunky.

Oh, and it's a really small thing but I really like that there's a level after Patriarch, High Priest, which helps level out the freakish name-level advancement the OD&D Cleric got. (It also lets you have Good High Priests to combat the EHPs, which is a nice symmetry that was pretty badly needed with the expanded alignments.)

It is 211 years since the Battle of Austerlitz, also known as the Battle of the Three Emperors; one of the most important and decisive engagements of the Napoleonic Wars. Widely regarded as the greatest victory achieved by Napoleon, the Grande Armée of France defeated a larger Russian and Austrian army led by Tsar Alexander I and Holy Roman Emperor Francis II. The battle occurred near the village of Austerlitz in the Austrian Empire (modern-day Slavkov u Brna in the Czech Republic). Because of the near-perfect execution of a calibrated but dangerous plan, the battle is often seen as a tactical masterpiece of the same stature as Cannae, the celebrated triumph by Hannibal some 2,000 years before. Austerlitz brought the War of the Third Coalition to a rapid end, with the Treaty of Pressburg signed by the exhausted Austrians later in the month.

In the summer of 1805, with threats emerging from Russia and Austria, Napoleon abandoned his ambitions to invade England and turned to deal with these new adversaries.

Moving with speed and efficiency, 200,000 French troops departed their camps near Boulogne and began crossing the Rhine along a 160-mile front on September 25. Responding to the threat, Austrian General Karl Mack concentrated his army at the fortress of Ulm in Bavaria. Conducting a brilliant campaign of maneuver, Napoleon swung north and descended on the Austrian rear.

After winning a series of battles, Napoleon captured Mack and 23,000 men at Ulm on October 20. Though the victory was dampened by Nelson's triumph at Trafalgar the next day, the Ulm Campaign effectively opened the way to Vienna which fell to French forces in November.

To the northeast, a Russian field army under Kutusov had gathered and absorbed many of the remaining Austrian units. Moving towards the enemy, Napoleon sought to bring them to battle before his lines of communication were severed or Prussia entered the conflict.

ITT: we discuss fun ways of dealing with shit or not-so-sht-but-still-shit players or GMs, or revel in being ones. "Just walk away" is always an option, but we here are insecure manchildren trying to assert superiority in games of pretend. Share your stories from both sides.

I'll start.

>GMing
>the party is negotiating with a long-time enemy
>suddenly, they get a message, dated in the future, signed by themselves
>it says "don't trust him, run"
>they abide and run like bats out of hell, and escape, aside from two guys who ignored it and were ambushed, outnumbered and killed
>later, an opportunity presents to send a message into the past
>they naturally decide to switch to asshole mode, mess with time and create a paradox
>with the biggest shit eating grins they decide to ignore the opportunity
>put on an even wider grin and say that since they didn't warn themselves, they are all dead now, and describe their deaths
>end campaign

No regrets. Fite me.

Can someone explain to me how spell slots work with multiclassing, particularly if you go something like bard/sorceror, both have arcane spells, both use charisma, but different spell focus.
So in accordance with the multiclass spell table you just add them up, and you have those spells that you can cast from any tradition?

Even better, look, a picture of it

Hey, /tg/

I'm having trouble as a DM.

If I scale things properly, combat takes two and a half hours. If I don't, it's over in a maximum of 3 rounds, with the players being able to soak up any damage inflicted relatively easily, and then just spam healing spells or potions after it's over.

Should I try to focus more on roleplaying and skill checks? Should I make combat overbearingly difficult so that it's a special sort of occasion?

I want D&D to be a near-perfect experience for my players, but they either steamroll shit, collect loot, and go on to the next kill-session, or they fall asleep at the table because combat goes too slow.

Also, I play 3.5 normally. I'm trying to break into 5e, but it seems pretty video-gamey to me.

Picture related, it's the last campaign I ran in 3.5. The players bypassed 2/3rds of the campaign because I sucked at scaling shit for them. They also killed the BBEG in one round.

>I'm trying to break into 5e, but it seems pretty video-gamey to me.

literally how

how can you come from diablo edition and think anything else is too gamey?
>>
>>50593998
The ideal length of combat (for me at least) is 3 turns per opponent, 5 turns overall (assuming party has AoE abilities).

For more important fact it's 5 turns on a big guy, 2-3 per henchmen, 7 in general (again, assuming AoE).

So general advice is, find what amount of turns it takes for combat to roll smoothly and not be anticlimactic, then run combat at said pace. Balance for number of turns, not HP or AC, they are just smoke and mirrors.

>Should I try to focus more on roleplaying and skill checks?

I suggest looking up Ryuutama. Not necessarily play it, although it's good, but getting ideas on how to run and abstract travel. Also, combat isn't necessarily THE thing to keep your PCs on their toes, Dangerous terrain (crossing the overflowing mountain river) and even exhaustion (for example under the blaring steppe sun) can be dangerous enough on their own and be enough to remember even after campaign has ended.

For travelling rules, you can google the Ryuutama subreddit. There are Ryuutama travel rules converted for 5e. I personally didn't use them, though.
>>
>>50594029
This. Have you considered that you don't actually need to track enemy hp, but just let them die when it's appropriate (i.e. 5-7 rounds of combat), OP? You're there to provide the optimal play experience to your playes not run an impartial board game

Why do you think?

That being said, I'm really hoping that Starfinder is "Paizo's answer to 5e," and they cut out all the cheese from PF in making it.

so ill be playing my first game in the setting of deadlands reloaded, but the system of gurps apparently.

i decided to branch out from my usual muscle heads and play a scientist that tinkers with occultism as well, such as making machines that run off magic and the like. i thought it would be fun since usually people make those two things oppose each other.

before i get to work on paper i was hoping to get some tips from you guys about how to play out a character like this, what cool things can i do with it?

Basically all I've got so far is building machines and giving it life with magic to fight for me.

Thank you.

Depends *entirely* on what mechanics your GM is using for gadgeteering and for magic, plus what character options you have available and even your starting point value.

The fact that GURPS can basically do anything means that it's hard to give generic advice; we need some sort of starting point or else there's a 90% chance the advice will be worthless in your specific campaign.
>>
>>50593071
Take into the gurps general thread. They have system specific answers for you. But as a good anon said, make sure to give them your setting parameters as well. Otherwise you're inventing the universe to make an apple pie.

How is it that with so many ventures into video games, that Games Workshop hasn't taken 40k itself digital? I understand that those overpriced pieces of plastic make up a large part of their revenue, but couldn't something similar be easily done with a free-to-play model?

Because they have a virtual monopoly on not just the plastic, but the paint as well. Not to mention all the other little crafting bits (although you don't really need to use GW brand as far as I know, but then again I'm not actively engaged with any of their games)

Also some people just like collecting and building/painting models, it's not all about the game aspect.
