What is the appeal of OSR games?

They seem like the worst of both worlds:
A rules-heavy game's mountains of weirdly specific, nitty gritty rules and disjointed subsystems.
A rules-lite game's ambiguous and noncommittal rules, and the onus it places on the GM to "figure out how this works yourself and make rulings" veiled under a naïve ideal of "Play/run the game however you like!"

I can hardly imagine an inexperienced GM picking up a game like Godbound or Stars Without Number and not being daunted by both the mass of rules and how ambiguously those rules are written. Even experienced GMs might find themselves confused by how differently OSR games are written.

Why bother? OSR gaming seems like a vehicle for either rose-tinted nostalgia from players reminiscing on their younger days when they had lower standards, or players wanting to be cool and "old school." Either way, it comes across as ludditism in RPG form, just as bizarre as someone who would prefer flintlocks and leeches to modern weaponry and medicine.

>>
It's 100% nostalgia. The point of those games is to use a lot of words to say absolutely nothing, to provide complex mechanics that most people won't use or will haphazardly apply from memory because that's how thing worked in the fictional good old days.
>>

>Stars Without Number
Is that the one with the awful 'phase level' ship combat system?

They just seem like 'lazy RPGs' that people latch on to because they want something other than D&D.

Don't these games also have the kind of silly GM tool of "now I'mma do something BAD to you in return, mmkay?" It's just not fluid.
>>
>>50723514
The appeal is that I can get players to it that aren't neckbeards only interested in "builds" or hipsters only interested in "the narrative".
The rules are easy to understand for players (and might be a bit trickier for DMs depending on what system is used), and the thing then that makes players stick out from other players is their ability to imagine and to problem solve.
This leads to better game sessions with less arguing about rules, less trouble finding interesting players and less bullshit that doesn't pertain to the game being played.
Go to /osrg/ and see how many more gameable ideas are written about per thread compared to any other general.

Do you like biopunk?

What is your favorite setting? I only know of two both set during WWI: Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld and Twig by Wildbow. Do you know more?

What do you like in the genre? What is your favroite biopunk monster? Would you set a game in it?

My favorite monsters were doctor spiders from Twig. cat sized beasts that enters the houses at night and operates on sleeping humans by sewing together limbs and body parts at random. The human is drugged to not wake up during surgery. All the damage is easily reversed by a skilled doctor but the horrifying impact on the popualtion is devastating.

Pretty much anything written by Bacigalupi. And the best monster are of course humans in his stories, modded so hard they rarely can still qualify as the same species.

Doesn't he write pretty exclusively politics-motivated anti-corporate manifestos under the thinly veiled guise of fiction?

You're not really reading a book for enjoyment at that point, you're listening to fictional girls recite how much they like Marx upon a backdrop of William Gibson's making.

I have a regular game that I've basically lost interest in. They brought me into the group to be a secondary DM and do a bunch of the worldbuilding, but I'm bored with the game because it's Pathfinder and it sucks dick at high levels. And low levels. I just want to play another system, but everyone else is having fun. So I do it for them.

A number of years ago I did some writefaggotry that was very popular in the thread and I was quite proud of.
Every so often I peruse the screencap threads to see if the screencap shows up.
Sometimes it does.
I screencapped it myself and included some of the praise for reasons.

I'm also reading the Dresden Files, on book 5 atm. Really interested to hear there is an RPG because the setting and tone feels so good.

Anyone got predictions on deaths?

I'd say Vax, Grog, Pike, Gilmore and Jarret
>>
I'd say Vax has a pretty good build right now, with is damage and his mobility. Grog is higher, as he's their front liner. Gilmore's pretty high, he's been waning for the last month or two. Jarret is running scared due to fear right now, and Pike's awake again, unsure about her odds.
>>
Well, Jaret, Scanlan and Pike just got fire-breathed, and while Pike and Scanlan are damaged, Jarret looks like the Japanese fella who survied the Napalm strike in We Were Soldiers.

>"the initiative system isn't realistic and it's very slow"

Is he seriously not able to wait six seconds for his turn because it's not realistic enough and boring?

Also judging by his other videos he seems to have a very shitty DM so instead of blaming him he blames the games.

>initiative should be based on experience
Okay, yeah, making your level involved in your initiative roll is a fine plan. Though as you level, you're likely fighting against relatively equal leveled foes so your bonuses cancel each other out, really. But still, yeah, including level is probably fine.

>some characters would just freeze, while more experienced characters would act!
Argument sort of lost me here. If the player character is so taken off guard by combat starting that they freeze, circumstances should have led to a surprise round anyway. What's the point?

>Finish a campaign that lasted over a year on a completely triumphant note
>Player caharacters have all accomplished their long-term goals, toppled the villain, and find themselves successful, wealthy, and influential.
>We end on the game with them leading exploration into new, uncharted lands as kings and leaders in their own right
>New campaign starts
>The very first note of the campaign is discovering that al of the old PCs have died in a border skirmish against the new big bad guy'a forces.
>We find their bodies desecrated and mutilated
>Session ends on the reveal that the BBEG's spear anihilates souls, meaning the old PCs are deader than dead - they're irrevocably gone beyond any magics

Am I a bad person for having lost all interest in the new game over this, and feeling a little bitter towards the GM? I get that this is supposed to make us really hate the new bad guy and sure, whatever, but I've been feeling awful about it. To play as an with these characters for over a year just to have them destroyed utterly, offscreen, and then put on display just feels fucking awful and I really have no motivation to keep going after that.

Am I just being too touchy or something?

This would bring a fairly targeted "The fuck are you doing, GM?" from me.
As a player and GM, I have a rule: The pcs belong to the player, and are not to be used in a way that is disrespectful to the player or the character's accomplishments".
They are heroes (or villains), and they EARNED that title, dammit, it needs to be respected, or the magic is gone.
I would tell off the GM, explain why I was leaving his game, then wish him well and break away.

UESRPG 3e Core release edition

After a lot of work the Unofficial Elder Scrolls RPG's 3rd edition Core Rulebook is finally up. I know this is a weekend thread typically, but I figured we could make an exception (and plus, we have to be /tg/ related at least once in a while).

Character sheets and a quick reference doc will be following soon. Conjuration is still not in until we have our bestiary, which is our current top priority (followed by the GM handbook). The goal of this release is to let people start testing the system, building characters, and running sessions with the tools available.

A big thanks to everyone who helped us make this happen. I hope you guys like it.

All the stuff you need can be found in the UESRPG google doc link right below. I'll be hanging around here for a while to answer questions.

15th December in military history:

533 – Vandalic War: Byzantine general Belisarius defeats the Vandals, commanded by King Gelimer, at the Battle of Tricamarum.

It is 152 years since the Battle of Nashville, a two-day battle that represented the end of large-scale fighting in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. It was fought between the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Lieutenant General John Bell Hood and Federal forces under Major General George H. Thomas. In one of the largest victories achieved by the Union during the war, Thomas routed Hood's army, largely destroying it as an effective fighting force.

The battle was the finale in a disastrous year for Hood’s forces. The rebels lost a long summer campaign for Atlanta, Georgia, in September 1864 when Hood abandoned the city to the army of William T. Sherman. Hood then took his diminished force north into Tennessee. He hoped to draw Sherman out of the Deep South, but Sherman had enough troops to split his force and send part of it to chase Hood into Tennessee. Sherman airily indicated that this was exactly what he wanted and that if Hood "continues to march North, all the way to Ohio, I will supply him with rations."

At Spring Hill, Tennessee, the Confederates allowed a Union division to escape from Columbia and pass by them unmolested to Franklin, a small town south of Nashville. Enraged over this missed opportunity, Hood ordered futile frontal assaults at Franklin against entrenched Federals, many of whom were armed with repeating rifles. The fierce, five-hour Battle of Franklin on November 30 decimated his force and cost him a division commander and four brigadier generals. Undeterred, he continued on and besieged Thomas’ larger force at Nashville.

There, Hood constructed works along a five-mile-long line south of the city. Between the 8,000 men lost at Franklin and those detached under Nathan Bedford Forrest, who had been sent to capture Murfreesboro, Hood’s army was down to about 20,000 men. He hoped to draw Thomas into attacking him. After repulsing those attacks, Hood reasoned, he would counterattack and take the city.

Let's talk about the courts of elementals and terrestrial gods. And when I say talk, I mean please tell me about them so I can steal ideas for my own game because I'm a filthy parasite with no stories of my own. How have you used elementals and terrestrial gods, what kinds of interesting courts and individuals have you come up with?
