I dunno where else to ask this, as /lit/ would probably flame it for being too low brow, and I trust /tg/ the most when it comes to writing compared to the likes of the more cynical /co/ and /a/.

So, when building a character with emotional scars/mental illness. How early would you say it'd be ideal to show that the character has them? So as to not come off as cliche or overly edgy?

I obviously mean within the context of an adventure story/monomyth.

I can elaborate more if need be. I have most of her character written, as well, as the plot outlined.

I should also note that the character isn't particularly edgy or lolsodeep, but rather, her scars play a role in shaping who she is, and also because I want an MC who is more of a fuck up than a Mary Sue

>So, when building a character with emotional scars/mental illness.
Oh boy here we go.

>How early would you say it'd be ideal to show that the character has them?
That entirely depends on how you show it and how obvious your display is, the illness itself and whether you actually show it or "show" them by just telling the reader through the most obvious display possible that doesn't involve saying "Dave has Autism".

>So as to not come off as cliche or overly edgy?
You know that way you've seen that illness/injury shown on [well-regarded and critically acclaimed media source]? Don't do that, you're making a cliche even if it isn't already there. Also, watch other things that have characters like this, find ways that come off as cliche/edgy to you, and figure out what made you think they were cliche/edgy. Don't do those.

>I should also note that the character isn't particularly edgy or lolsodeep, but rather, her scars play a role in shaping who she is, and also because I want an MC who is more of a fuck up than a Mary Sue
I don't believe you but okay.

I was contemplating kicking off the entire story with a dream sequence of showcasing guilt. One that's eerie, and feels very much like real life, before becoming into a nightmarish descent into insanity and then her waking up.

Something that showcases how she feels burdened and guilty by the loss of someone dear to her.

Her entire character arc is about self understanding, and seeking purpose in life, as she's someone rather aimless and purposeless overall. I contrast her by having some of the other central character being very driven characters with very strong and well-defined purposes in life.

If magic is part of the universe then it is a force that exists objectively.
You cannot have science while ignoring one of the basic forces that shape your universe. Studying magic without also understanding the other aspects of the universe is not going to get you anywhere either.
For example a healing spell would inherently require an intricate knowledge of anatomy. unless it consists of the calling upon other intelligent entities to do the actual work for you.

It is an cheap and artificial separation to create some diversity when the author cannot come up with more interesting cultural differences.

Not necessarily. Sympathetic magic that relies more upon symbolism and abstract links is perfectly reasonable to have in a setting, and doesn't require that element of intellectualism or actual understanding.

Extremely thought based magic, including variants like magic-as-programming or magic mathematics are cool, but they're far from the only way of doing magic.

So, /tg/, suppose you have a planet and a civilization roughly on par with our own in terms of technology and accumulated knowledge. Don't worry about spaceships.

It's a nice planet, very earthlike (for our purposes let's make it already terraformed, with our ecology or something similar enough), minerals are there, you have energy to tap: there is only one slight problem, it doesn't have fossil fuels.
Oh, and for our purposes, think of a not really high population of colonists.

How is our new society affected? Out of my mind the first problem is transport, of course, but I dare to say that individual transport isn't that much of a problem (you can plan cities with more bikes/mass transit; and I dare to say electric cars aren't a strecth anymore, at least with cheap power), what bugs me are planes and especially ships. Planes I suppose can be dealt with energy crops (and I'd suppose less low cost flights), but... I dunno, ships are efficient, but they do guzzle much gas, don't they? I wouldn't want them to be nuclear-powered.

Aside form that... what are the petrolchemicals that are really would be a pain in the ass to go without, or to be more precise, to find substitute goods for? Tires? Some fertilizers?

Not sure if metallurgy would have problems without coal.

It would be a planet with heavily different packages for... for everything, basically, that's for sure.

Depends on the setting?
What kind of space habitat is it?
Is it a satellite of a major planet?
Is it a satellite around a star without a habitable planet nearby?
Is it a vagabond spaceship traveling at FTL speeds from port to port?
Is it a realistic spaceship on a lonely journey through the emptiness of space?

Careful, collectivist. Fanatic about maintenance, cleanliness.

EVA hand signals-but only in an EVA suit or an open environment. Otherwise no hand gestures whatsoever.

Agoraphobic. Wide open space means either vacuum, or a space that can't be escaped from quickly if a breach happens. Unless you're in a body that's rated for vacuum, then it's alright.

First time posting here in a while. If you have a copy of that "Alshard (WIP)" pdf I made years ago, then thanks for keeping it around. I've noticed people still share it this year, and it's still the main result if you even attempt to find an English Alshard. It was a fucking shit pdf however, and I lost motivation to finish it.

The motivation is back. I still have no grasp of Japanese, nor do I have the rulebook. What I do have is the same burning autism from 3 years ago. I'm not done yet, but here's a rough copy. The fluff is being properly organised, the rules are being properly explained, and I've learned how to typeset my work.

There's definitely more to go. I'm working on it at the moment, actually. I'm figuring out XP costs for character improvement, e.g. attribute raises. I'd like to also add some subclasses like the Panzer Ritter (which I currently have enough data on to add to the game without any blanks), and if I'm pretty lucky I'll find details of some monsters.

>Be me, an aged Paladin of a just god
>Strive the best I can to do good in the world, protect the meek, deliver justice to evil-doers (and on rare occasions redeem them) and set an example for everyone to follow
>Gods knows there were times where I failed, either from being duped or making the wrong decision where I thought it as right, but I always fix the mistakes I've made.
>I learned, in the 20 years I've been a Paladin, that while I am a devout servant of my god my viewpoints themselves are different from everyone else's, even among my peers, and that forcing my worldview on others is a great way to undermine your own efforts
>Long story short, as long as you are trying to do good I don't care what religion you follow
>Unless it's an evil one and you do evil, then it's smiting time.
>Recently, the order of which I serve has entrusted me with the training of one of the newly initiated Paladins, stating that my experience and knowledge of our god's workings will guide him.
>I would rather the paladin in question make the discoveries on his own while I supported him throughout his journey, for I don't want him to merely adopt my discoveries
>This younger Paladin (whom I shall call David to protect his true identity) is eager, full of energy and life, and obnoxious in his trying to convert people and following our scriptures to the letter
>Naïve, but still as devoted to his cause as anyone in our order, or so I thought.

>The problems started when we were informed of a band of bandits who were harassing scores of towns and villages, which curiously enough weren't on or near farmlands, mines or any such resources.
>Was informed of this as this would be the perfect opportunity for the younger paladin to test his mettle. David was giddy with excitement in his first ever assignment, but I thought he would soon learn to not celebrate such assignments as they would often result in killings
>David and I travel to the towns and villages that were attacked, and things started to get sour between us. I attempted to gather as much information as possible about the attacks, the bandits and how long ago the attacks happened, for the question of why was answered the moment we reached those towns. I was hoping to assist the villagers by curing their wounds and assisting them however I can, but that wasn't to be.
>All the surviving victims of the bandit attacks were gruesomely mutilated and degraded, the recent dead rounded up, bound and collectively immolated to death, and from eyewitness accounts to seeing for myself the bandits torched everything they could get their hands on- even the food storage, nothing was taken.
>These bandits burned and murdered for fun. Doesn't make sense though, how could such a group sustain themselves without food, weapons or other materials?
>During all of our visits, David would merely ask the locals where the bandits were and, after making bold sweeping statements about doing good for the people, immediately set of on the first bit of information to where he thought the hideout was.
>>
>>50739422
>The first time he did this, I tried to pull him up on his actions and tried discussing with him why it was important to visit the towns first, but he interrupted me with a question that infuriated me... "Why are you stalling when evil is afoot?"
>It wasn't the question itself, but his manner that got to me, his smirking seemed to say that he knew he was right and I was wrong.
>I repressed my anger and tried to explain to him that going into the woods unprepared was a recipe for disaster, but I found that David's preferred method of argument was to talk louder than your opponent. I had to order him to stay with me until we learn more about what we were up against. He objected by stating that what I am doing is not what real paladins do, but still obeyed my orders.
>After investigating, helping the needy, and coping with the strain in relationship with David, I finally learned of the actual location of the bandit hideout, their numbers and the condition of their gear. We prepared for battle and the wilderness before heading off to the hideout, and to cut a long story short me, David and other able bodied men stormed the hideout, defeating the bandits. Interrogation and questioning reveals that they WERE killing for fun and were being paid by an unknown benefactor, their leader slitting his own throat before we could face him in battle. Very strange behavior for a bandit leader.
>According to the laws of the land, these bandits were to be taken to the nearest city where the jury would make a decision on their fates based on the reports of us and the villagers. David does what I believe to be the most stupidest thing in this situation.
>>
>>50739432
>He declares that he will redeem one of the bandits and set him on the right path. Essentially, David is forcing the bandit to convert to our faith, not only that but this means that said bandit will be spared from the trial. The rest of the bandits catch on to this and plead for mercy, fully intent on using David as a get-out-of-jail-free card.
>Naturally I object to this and try to explain why doing what he's about to do will cheat the bandit's victims out of getting the justice they have been asking for. No sooner than I bring up the villagers than David starts raising his voice about how the bandits have a right to live and that I should fall for letting them get killed by the kingdom.
>My emotions got the better of me and I tore into him verbally, what was said between us forgotten over the noise and emotions until it finally ended with him attacking me with his fists and me knocking him out before he could land a blow. I then realized that this had gotten serous, and that the men who joined us were both shocked and disappointed in what they saw. The bandits were crestfallen that their escape from punishment was now unconscious
>I led the bandits to the nearest military outpost for them to take to the courts, spread the news to the villagers (which was difficult, because David regained consciousness and berated me before heading off back to the monastery) and reported what had happened with the bandits, and them informing me of the accusations David has made against me.
>The accusations were dropped when the order got testimonies about what really happened from the villagers and the men who accompanied us, but the teaching of David was bequeathed to another similarly experienced paladin.

Help me build a setting where the last bastions of humanity live in underground cities, safe from the earth's inhospitable surface. Conventional wisdom is that the deeper you are, the better, and cities end up looking like inverted spires with the richest living deep beneath the earth. Food can be grown with hydroponics and power is a cinch thanks to fusion/fission plants. But certain parts can be difficult to replace and disused parts of the city have fallen into disrepair. There are entire systems of tunnels and massive chambers that no longer serve any use.

The only chance for a normal person to see the surface is to join the (mecha)SUIT units who venture above ground on missions of vital importance.

How would the cities be different, what would societies become? What secrets are being kept from the average joe?

So here's the issue with that setting then:
How is the surface inhospitable?
With that kind of tech, we're looking at pretty easy geodesic domes and moon colonization.

I hope the rumours about that are true, as well as the combined Codex. Along with IA14, looking like a good year for Admech.

Is it just me sucking at painting as usual, or are the Mechanicus really tricky to paint? I probably shouldn't have picked them for my first army, they have almost Deldar levels of spikes. Tried and Inquisitiors and their Acolytes and had a much easier time of it.
