Hey /tg/,

it's been ages since I've read some good fantasy. Even fantasy in general, aside from reading Prince of Thorns a few years ago (which I enjoyed, even though I'm not a fan of postapocalyptic fantasy).

I wanted to read something but I realized I have no idea of what's big in fantasy since like 2005, maybe earlier.

So I asked a few friends and I was recommended two book, which I promptly ordered, pic related.

Now, The Final Empire I have found to be absolute dogshit that might as well have been written by a goth teen on livejournal in 2007.

However, I am thoroughly enojying The Blade itself, it's a great book. I'm only halfway through the first one and already thinking: what are some actually good contemporary fantasy books, aside from Abercrombie?

I would prefer if they weren't 10 piece series of 800 page books each, but I know how this goes.

tl;dr: recommend me some good contemporary fantasy that is not young adult trash like Mistborn.

Don't let anyone recommend The Name of the Wind or its sequel. It's one of the only fantasy series I've ever put down and I even stuck it out through all of The Wheel of Time.
>>
>>50738586
I'll keep that in mind. I've burned myself with Mistborn enough. It still makes me mad.

Additionally, you may want to give >>>/lit/8849931 a look. They have some helpful charts and recommendations.

You are given tickets from a wizard to a alternate reality/plane/universe/.ect. When you walk up to the shop and see through the window, you see it is the embodiment/god of chaos running the shop. What would he name the place? pic related.

What are some good magic systems that go into detail as to how someone BEGINS in magic? Like how someone makes the leap from mundane to basic primary skills? Every system goes into elaborate details about how to fell gods with bolts of energy and transform dragons into chickens, but very few give any meat behind how a student actually learns to magic.

Palladium 1 wizards start with 4 elementary spells given to every apprentice and need to FIND new ones. Or they can do a maddening ritual that shoves new ones into their brains.
>>
>>50738122
Does a master give them the spells? Are they just "injected" into their brains? Do they have to learn them?
>>
>>50738004
>>50738189
Well, a lot of wizardry systems are based on science.

So it's usually like, you read a book, it says you say these words, make this gesture, it might have diagrams, etc.

Like, look up chemical synthesis steps, and imagine those are alchemical or ritual steps. And then to figure out what chemicals are called for, you look those up, and so on.

Because kitchen table is best table.

My friends and I opened a box yesterday, then built decks out of the contents. Things went slowly so we didn't quite finish trading around.

I ended up with this, would appreciate some help on it.

Cardpool is pretty limited; we said we would try to stick to just the contents of the box.

This is the only MTG general I would ever think about posting in and I want to encourage these threads to stick around. Sadly I'm on a train to the airport rn and can't post more than a few fun casual jank decks I brewed up when I was bored, here we go lads

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/gideons-pillow-fort-no-girls-or-fun-allowed/

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/mono-white-tokens-300-dudes-seriously/

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ninjers-3/

As a way to encourage discussion, what's holding you back from realising most of your brews? Land base for me. I wish they'd be more liberal with land reprints. Lands should never be past uncommon, just my .02 dollaridoos though.
>>
>>50737945
I miss the days when I played seriously janky decks assembled out of my nonsensical scrapheap of a collection

Like, 'I want to play slivers but I have under 10. Hrrm, but I have all these Mistform creatures...'
>>
>>50737945

I'll just post my list here, I don't have it on tapped out yet. Something I brewed recently

Creatures
4x Invisible Stalker
3x Geist of Saint Traft
4x Ascended Law Mage
4x Reflector Mage
1x Bruna Light of Alabaster

Enchantments
3x Steel of The Godhead
4x Aqueous Form
4x Detention Sphere
4x Ethereal Armor

Instants
3x Azorius Charm

Sorceries
2x Supreme Verdict

With 4x glacial fortresses then an equal distribution of plains/islands

So I really like the IDEA of roleplaying, but disliked every game I played. It was either too gamey or too boring, and I was never able to fully express my character in a way that's fun for everybody.

I've tried DnD 4e and 5e and high fantasy and post apocalyptic (mad max) GURPS

Have I not found the right game yet or am I just not fit for roleplaying?

Play something rules lighter and more narrative heavy.
Imagine a triangle chart with "gamey" "simulationist" and "narrativist" at the points. D&D is a grid based tabletop tactics game with some roleplaying elements injected like a bad botox treatment. GURPS is simulationist to the max. Try Fate (or Fate Accelerated), or something Powered by the Apocalypse, or even Cortex+.
>>
>>50737851
To be fair, DnD in general tends to attract or even lead to very gamey mindsets. As for GURPS, I can't say.

It could be mostly likely column A, but some more specifics would be nice.
>>
>>50737851
>It was either too gamey or too boring
The key is actually getting a good GM who makes time for clever stuff, rather than being all about the combat grind.

I'd recommend something in 40krp like Rogue Trader, with a GM who knows the lore, and is basically running a simulation of the world for your party to play with.

Everyone knows that Katanas Are Underpowered in D20...

But what if, for the sake of a certain setting, they really were?

How would you imagine a setting in which a certain kingdom, using a presumably magical yet very easily reproducible process, discovers how to produce a sword which actually HAS the qualities of the meme katana. It may not be able to afford to arm every single soldier with that ridiculous munchkin sword, but it can easily provide thousands of them with it.

How would that change the politics of the setting? How would that affect the way wars are conducted? Would it truly cause that much of a change?

Sorry, I don't want to derail the thread but if a player wants to use an eastern themed weapon like a katana or a tanto or a tetsubo (my personal favorite) I just let them reflavor a longsword or a dagger or a greatclub. Is this bad?

I've been working recently on a 5th edition adaptation of the Pendragon roleplaying game. Nothing too fancy just a couple of pages of fluff and mechanics I wrote up. However, I am at a dead end when it comes to magic and how it works exactly. What I want to know is a few things ...

>How do people learn magic?

>How is magic researched?

>Are magic spells written in books or stored somewhere else?

>What forms does magic take?

>How would a 1st level wizard learn magic?

Reading the Romances and Chansons de Geste that make up the Matter of Britain makes one thing very clear to us: Magic isn't a system.

It appears randomly and never in the hands of the protagonists. Saxon sorcery in the earliest texts, the Fey grants their gifts to their half-breed kin like the old King of Cornwall who rides a magical horse, mysterious sages like Merlin who never hand out any of their secrets.
>>50737329 is pretty much right. 5E is not meant for Chivalric legend. Do pendragon or even The Prince Valiant Storytelling game, which I myself am running a Arthurian campaign in.
If you want to include sorcery in any of those systems, I found that having 'Magic' ability be a reward for having completed a quest that pushes a skill one step above what is actually possible, and tie it into the mythology.
In Prince Valiant, the max skill on can have is 6, but I allow players to do quests to push those to a seven, which other than just add one mice dice give them 'magical' ability.

Examples would be: a 7 in Naturalite, the knowledge of the woods and wilds, gave a player the mythical ability to commune with the birds, an idea taken from proto-norse legend.
Smithing 7, which a player learnt from a Finnish Giant, led him forge truly magical weaponry, with the right materials of course, etc.

Just don't make magic commonplace. It should be rare, mysterious and scary. Fighting a sorcerer is an epic level quest, even with a full party.
>>
the Arthur myths aren't D&D buddy, there aren't wizards wandering around doing wizard shit all day. Merlin is the only male wizard to begin with and even then calling him 'wizard' didn't come until much later.

Your character is part of a party of unexperienced PCs walking single-file through a dungeon. Your character is at the front. This is their first adventure and your character has never had to venture into a dungeon before.

Your party comes across a long, narrow corridor with no features and seemingly no purpose. Knowing your GM, you are aware that this is almost definitely a trap of some variety but your character is not experienced enough to guess this or know this.

If you check for traps based entirely off of what you know about your GM's tendencies, aren't you metagaming?
If you knowingly lead the party into the trap because your character wouldn't be aware that a trap lies ahead, wouldn't you be putting your party at a mechanical disadvantage just for the sake of roleplaying?

What is the right path there?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Either work.

If you check for traps claim its intuition or paranoia.

If you don't check for traps, use it as experience for being paranoid later on.

Also depends on how deadly the system is. In AD&D, I'd always check for traps. In Anima or Exalted? Fuck your traps, the Golden-Anus fears no man!

>If you knowingly lead the party into the trap because your character wouldn't be aware that a trap lies ahead, wouldn't you be putting your party at a mechanical disadvantage just for the sake of roleplaying?
that is the entire point of roleplaying, yes.
>>
>>50736367
It really depends on your character.
Half of my characters wouldn't really feel comfortable taking the lead anyway. Those that do, are either supposed to be naive optimists or people who enjoy looking for traps and the like. The former would just charge in, the latter would take their time.

Doesn't look like it. Very STALKERish. But then, I'm jaded and bitter. So maybe someone else knows the system better.
>>
>>50735739
If you like the very pretty artwork, yes.
Otherwise, no.

The rules seem solid, but character creation can be confusing.
The setting is great, but falls down in some small places, like its naïve Euro-based treatment of Africa.
Otherwise, I am entirely in love with it.
I just wish I could convince people to play it to give it a test run.

>>

The first few sets in Magic weren't meant to be balanced, it was made for you to try and find all the cards, and be surprised when you hear about new cool cards. For example, the creators never thought ancestral recall was balanced, it didn't need to be, it was more for the wow factor, that's why there's an initial huge disparity in card quality.

Also, good job and on making an infinite combo, they're always fun. They get better and better, trust me, especially when you accidentally stumble into them. Keep enjoying Magic anon, it's a fun game.
